I was going to do it.
I was finally going to ask Mark Jensen over to my house to study for our upcoming biology test.
I'd been wanting to ask him for weeks, but had been too shy.
What if he said no?
What if he laughed at me?
What if he thought I was stupid?
But tonight, something was different.
Tonight, I felt brave.
I picked up the phone and dialed his number.
"Hello?"
"Hey Mark, it's Emily," I said.
"Hey Emily!"
He sounded pleased to hear from me.
My heart skipped a beat.
"Hey, I was wondering if you wanted to come over and study for our bio test with me? I've got a ton of notes and stuff that you can copy from."
There was a pause on the other end of the line.
For a second I thought he was going to say no, but then he said, "Sure, that sounds like fun!"
Fun?He thought studying with me would be fun?
I smiled into the receiver, feeling a warmth spread through my body.
"Awesome," I said.
"I'll see you soon?"
"Yeah!"
He sounded enthusiastic and genuine.
I open the door to find Mark standing there with a casual smile, his backpack slung over one shoulder.
"Hey," he says, stepping inside as I move aside.
My heart races as I close the door behind him, the sound of the latch clicking into place echoing through the hallway.
We head to the living room, where I've already spread out my biology notes on the coffee table, the papers rustling softly as we walk by.
Mark sits down on the couch, and I join him, trying to focus on the task at hand, but my mind keeps wandering back to the way he smiled at me when he walked in.
As we start reviewing the material, our shoulders occasionally brush, sending a jolt through me each time, like a tiny spark of electricity.
I glance at him, catching his eye, and we both laugh awkwardly, the sound filling the room and making me feel like I'm floating.
"Okay, so what's the difference between mitosis and meiosis again?" Mark asks, his brow furrowed in concentration.
I take a deep breath, trying to composed myself. "Um, mitosis is when...when cells divide to make more cells, and meiosis is when...when cells divide to make gametes."
Mark nods, his eyes never leaving mine. "Got it."
We continue studying in silence for a few minutes, the only sound being the scratching of pens on paper and the occasional creak of the old couch.
Suddenly, Mark reaches out and gently brushes a strand of hair out of my face, his fingers grazing my skin and sending shivers down my spine.
I look up at him, my heart pounding in my chest, and our eyes lock in a way that makes me feel like I'm drowning.
"Emily, there's something I've been meaning to tell you," Mark says softly, his voice barely above a whisper.
I swallow hard, my pulse quickening. "What is it?"
He hesitates for a moment, then takes a deep breath. "I've liked you for a long time, and I was hoping this study session could be more than just about biology."
I hesitated, feeling the weight of his confession, but the warmth of his gaze melted my resolve.
My heart pounded as I leaned in, whispering, "Let's forget biology and see what else we can study."
Mark's eyes widened with surprise before a playful grin spread across his face.
He pulled me closer, our lips meeting in a tentative kiss that quickly deepened.
The world outside faded away as we explored this new territory together, clumsy yet eager.
Time slipped by unnoticed until the sound of the front door creaking open jolted us apart.
My breath caught as Sarah's familiar voice called out, "Emily, you home?"
I froze, my lips still tingling from the kiss, as Mark's eyes darted towards the door.
We were sitting on the couch, surrounded by biology notes and textbooks, but it was like we were in a different universe altogether.
The sound of Sarah's footsteps echoed through the hallway, growing louder with each step.
Mark quickly scrambled to his feet, his face flushed, and I followed suit, trying to compose myself.
I smoothed out my hair, attempting to erase any evidence of our impromptu make-out session.
But it was too late; Sarah had already appeared in the doorway, a curious expression on her face.
"Hey, guys," she said, her eyes flicking between Mark and me. "What's going on?"
I forced a casual smile onto my face, trying to play it cool. "Just studying for our bio test."
Sarah raised an eyebrow. "At 8 pm on a Friday night?"
I shrugged. "We're just really dedicated students."
Mark chuckled nervously beside me, and I shot him a warning glance.
But before Sarah could respond, her phone rang, and she excused herself to answer it.
As she walked away, Mark turned to me, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Where were we?"
I smiled slyly back at him. "I think we were just getting started."
Here is the next part of the story:
Sarah returned, phone in hand, her eyes narrowing as she caught the lingering tension between Mark and me. "You two seem awfully cozy," she teased, raising an eyebrow.
I laughed nervously, glancing at Mark, who shrugged with a playful grin.
Sarah plopped down beside us, flipping through my biology notes. "So, mitosis or meiosis?" she quipped, breaking the awkward silence.
Mark and I exchanged a knowing look, our secret simmering beneath the surface.
As we resumed studying, my fingers brushed against his under the table. He leaned closer, whispering, "Let's see where this goes," before kissing me again.
The world around us melted away, and all that mattered was the sensation of his lips on mine.
But just as we were getting lost in the moment, Sarah's voice pierced through the air. "Uh, guys? I think you might want to focus on biology right now."
I pulled back, my cheeks flushing as I realized we'd forgotten about Sarah's presence.
Mark's eyes sparkled with amusement as he whispered, "Later," before turning back to the notes.
I nodded, trying to compose myself as we delved back into the world of cells and chromosomes.
But my mind kept wandering back to the kiss, and the promise of what was to come.
The night stretched ahead, full of possibilities and unspoken promises.
