A woman named Emma is conflicted about her feelings for her brother's best friend, Ethan Miller, and contemplates whether to pursue a romantic relationship with him.
I’m not sure when it happened, but I realized that my brother’s best friend Ethan had become more than just that—my brother’s best friend.
In fact, I don’t know if he ever really was just that to me.
Jake and Ethan were practically inseparable growing up, and as the younger sister, I tagged along on most of their adventures.
We even went to the same schools together through college where Jake and Ethan both graduated with degrees in business management and me with a degree in finance—thanks to some extra classes over the summer.
I remember one summer vacation when Jake had gone away for a week to visit an aunt and uncle while my dad stayed behind for work.
Ethan stayed at our house to keep Mom, who’s an English professor at the local university, company while I worked at my summer job in town—I was a waitress at the local diner.
One afternoon after I had gotten home from work, I changed into my swimsuit and grabbed a towel before heading out back.
When I got outside, Ethan was there waiting for me.
He had already changed into his swim trunks and tossed a beach ball back and forth between his hands as he watched me walk over to the pool.
He smiled when I pushed off the edge of the pool and swam to the other side, then turned around to swim back toward him before pulling myself out of the water.
For some reason, I had always felt comfortable with Ethan, like I could tell him anything or go to him for help if I needed it, even if it was just a ride somewhere because I didn’t have a car yet or a shoulder to cry on after a bad day at school or work.
I used to think of him as an older brother or even a guardian angel who watched over me whenever I needed him, swooping in to save me from whatever stressed me out or made me sad or angry, but lately…lately I’d been feeling something else entirely toward Ethan.
It all started last summer when we took a family vacation together in Hawaii to celebrate Jake’s graduation from college with Mom and Dad there too.
