Jolene came home late, carrying a bag from the convenience store down the street and a container of something from the deli.
When she saw me on the couch, she smiled and let out a soft "Hi."
I returned the greeting, watching her as she pulled out a container of strawberries, a bottle of wine, and a can of whipped cream.
"Strawberries and wine?" I asked.
She nodded, setting the bottle down on the coffee table.
"It’s my favorite treat," she said.
"Sometimes you need a treat in life."
"Definitely. Tonight I could use one."
I reached for the wine opener, and Jolene set down the container of strawberries before coming over to take it from my hands.
"I’ll get that," she said.
"You open the can of whipped cream."
I took the can from her and tried to open it.
It wouldn’t budge.
"Damn it," I muttered.
Jolene came over to me and took the can in her hands.
With one quick twist, she had it open.
She handed it back to me, and I took a big dollop of whipped cream from the top and put it directly into my mouth.
The sweet flavor hit my taste buds, and I closed my eyes, savoring it.
"Julie," Jolene said softly.
I opened my eyes and looked at her.
A Taste of Taboo
She reached into the container and picked up a strawberry, examining it for a moment before she got up and walked over to the kitchen sink.
She turned on the water, and I watched as she rinsed the strawberry.
The water droplets caught the dim light of the kitchen.
When she was done, she turned off the water and walked back over to me.
She sat down on the couch beside me, closer than she had been before.
The couch cushion dipped with her weight.
Her fingers brushed mine as she placed the strawberry in my palm.
The fruit was still cool and damp from washing.
I looked at her face, noticing that her breathing had slowed and that she was watching my face intently.
The can of whipped cream sat between us on the couch, forgotten for the moment.
A Taste of Taboo
I took a bite of the strawberry, and the room seemed to exhale with us.
The strawberry's sweetness lingered on my tongue as Jolene reached for the wine bottle.
She uncorked it with a practiced ease, the sound of the cork popping filling the room.
The rich, burgundy liquid splashed into two glasses she produced from somewhere behind the couch.
I hadn’t noticed them there before.
The room seemed warmer now, and I could see how the evening light caught in her hair.
She handed me a glass, her fingertips brushing against mine longer than necessary.
The wine's aroma filled the space between us as she shifted even closer, her knee now touching mine.
"Julie, there's something I need to tell you," Jolene said, her voice barely above a whisper.
I took a sip of the wine, trying to steady myself.
She looked down at her glass, then back up at me, her eyes searching mine. "I've been offered a job in another city."
