A small story about desire
I had found it, after all, and I felt a strange sense of ownership over it.
I’d been going through the papers for hours—my back ached from sitting in the same position for so long, and my stomach was growling with hunger.
The sun was starting to set outside the library windows, casting an orange glow on the walls.
Thunder rumbled in the distance, promising a storm tonight.
But I wasn’t ready to go home yet—I still had one more box to go through.
The last box of papers from the historical society, hidden away at the bottom of a dusty old filing cabinet in the back room.
I pulled it out carefully and set it on the table in front of me with a thump.
Then I reached down into my pocket and pulled out my keys.
As I unlocked the box, my fingers brushed against something cool and smooth—a quarter?
I frowned and reached into my pocket again, pulling out the small golden amulet.
It was beautiful—almost too much so for me to believe that I had just found it sitting at the bottom of a box of old papers.
The metal felt warm in my hand, as though it had been sitting in the sun all afternoon, but I knew that wasn’t possible.
It had been sitting at the bottom of a filing cabinet for who knows how long before I stumbled across it.
I tilted it back and forth under the light, watching as the symbols etched into its surface caught the sunlight and gleamed like jewels.
