From the airport to his town, they drove for about two hours.
The big tree on the roadside was turning yellow, like someone had painted the entire tree gold.
The strong wind blew past and the tree shook; a few leaves flew out of the window.
"Oh God, beautiful America."
This was the best season of the year, and her son had not seen her for almost three years.
She was excited thinking that she would get to hug him at any second now.
Suddenly, a car bumped into them from behind.
She felt dizzy, as if the sky was spinning.
When she came back to her senses, she realized that she was sitting in a strange room on a soft couch.
The man standing in front of her was handsome, young, and strong—nothing like her son who was thin and weak.
"Who are you?"
"Mrs. Li Mei, my name is Jake Thompson. You were in an accident outside of town and have been sleeping for a day."
Jake smiled and handed her a cup of warm water.
"I—I don't know you. I—"
Li Mei stood up, her legs shaking.
She looked around the room, trying to remember how she got there.
The room was not big, with a small window on the right side.
The afternoon sun shone through the window, casting a warm light on the floor.
There was a bed in the corner, and a door on the opposite side of the couch.
Jake watched her carefully as she stumbled toward the door.
"Please, take it easy."
He stepped forward and held her arm gently.
Li Mei hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should trust this stranger.
But his grip was gentle and reassuring, so she let him lead her across the room.
"I was driving home from work when I saw you lying on the ground. You were unconscious. I picked you up and brought you here."
Jake explained as they walked slowly.
Li Mei tried to focus on his words, but her mind was foggy and hard to understand.
