MidReal Story

A Human Among Elves

Scenario:Becoming the first human knight in the Elven Knights was supposed to be my crowning achievement. Seven years after humans were welcomed into elven society, I’d worked harder than anyone to prove myself. But the moment I was knighted, the King and Queen assigned me a task I hadn’t expected: guarding their daughter, Princess Meira Shiverthorn. The honor was immense, but Meira’s glare told me she saw it differently. As soon as her parents left, she turned to me, her voice low and sharp. “Listen here, human scum,” she said in a low, venomous tone. “I don’t need a personal guard. I’m stuck with you because I can’t defy my parents.” Before I could respond, she turned sharply, gesturing for me to follow. As she walked away, a small book slipped from her armor. Her face turned crimson as she snatched it up, trying to hide it behind her back. It wasn’t hard to recognize—it was an erotic novel.

I was the first of my kind to be inducted into the ranks of the male elven guardians.
Though I was still respected by the King and Queen, not everyone was happy with the inclusion of humans in the ranks of their most sacred and honored guard.
Not one person in particular came to mind, though it was easy to surmise who it could be, given the circumstances.
It wasn’t long after my induction that I found myself face to face with Princess Meira for the first time.
The night had been much like any other since I’d taken up my post: uneventful.
That was until a figure appeared at the edge of the forest as I was making my final rounds.
It was a girl with silver hair cascading down her back like moonlight and running until it disappeared into the dark grass.
At first, I thought she must be a spirit or fairy of some kind, but as she turned to face me, I saw that it was none other.
Emerald green eyes flashed with fire as she took in my form.
I drew myself up, hand on the hilt of my sword, ready for battle if need be.
Though I knew that was unlikely with the princess.
I had seen her from afar on multiple occasions.

She was a beautiful girl, and I had heard she was kind as well.
But in that moment, I would have never guessed it.
Her face was twisted into a scowl that would have made the most seasoned warrior quiver with fear.
I held my ground, though, and watched as she approached.
Her footsteps were silent on the dewy grass, and her cloak billowed behind her like a dark cloud.
The moonlight caught on her silver hair, casting an ethereal glow around her.
I kept my hand on the hilt of my sword, as protocol demanded.
Though I knew it was unnecessary, it seemed to irritate her further.
She stopped three paces away from me, and I could see the book in her hand more clearly now.
It was an erotic novel, bound in worn leather and adorned with strange symbols that glowed softly in the moonlight.

The corners of the pages were dog-eared from frequent reading. The silence stretched between us for what felt like an eternity.
Finally, I lowered my head in a respectful bow.
I kept my eyes on her movements out of the corner of my eye, careful not to let my guard down for even a moment.
She circled around me, her boots crushing the fallen leaves beneath her feet.
The spine of the book crackled in her grip, and I could see her knuckles turning white as she squeezed it tighter.
The symbols on the cover seemed to pulse brighter with her agitation.
She stopped directly in front of me, and I could see the muscle twitching in her jaw.
Her free hand moved to rest on the dagger at her belt, a ceremonial piece that was meant more for show than battle.
I straightened slowly, keeping my movements deliberate and non-threatening.
The air seemed to grow heavier with tension as she drew the dagger from its sheath, pointing it at my chest.
"Why are you here, human?" she demanded, her voice a low hiss that cut through the night air.
"I was assigned to protect the realm, Your Highness," I replied, meeting her gaze with as much calm as I could muster.
"Protect it from what?" she snapped, her eyes narrowing. "From me?"
