Loona loves me.
I mean, not like loves me.
We’re more like… siblings.
No, that’s not right either.
We’re friends.
Yeah!
We’re friends and I love her like I would a sister.
But there’s this other thing, too.
I don’t know how to describe it.
I just know I want to be around her.
I want to talk to her and listen to her and touch her.
I want to hold her and comfort her.
I want to make her happy and see her smile.
And I want to kiss her.
Oh hell.
I want to do a lot of things with her that I can’t even begin to describe because I’m not even sure what they are or what they mean or where they come from.
All I know is that it’s something big, something important, and it’s all about Loona.
Blitzø doesn’t like it when I talk about my feelings for Loona, so I don’t bring it up very often.
But he can’t stop me from thinking about it, and he can’t stop me from loving her in my own way.
Even if she doesn’t love me back, not like that.
Not the way I want her to love me, even though I don’t know what that means or looks like or feels like.
A Helluva Sister
I pace the empty hallway outside Loona’s office, practicing what I’m going to say for the twentieth time.
My footsteps echo off the walls and my heart pounds against my ribs.
I can see her through the frosted glass of her office door, hunched over her phone as usual.
Her sandwich is on the desk in front of her, and she’s taking a bite every few minutes.
It’s almost one o’clock, so I know she’ll be going to lunch soon.
I’ve been waiting for this moment all morning, and now that it’s finally here, I’m not sure I’m ready.
I take a deep breath and reach out to grab the doorknob.
My hand shakes as I turn it and push the door open.
The hinges creak a little as I step inside.
Loona doesn’t look up from her phone, just keeps scrolling through whatever she’s reading.
A Helluva Sister
She takes another bite of her sandwich, chewing slowly. I clear my throat to get her attention.
She looks up then, meeting my eyes with hers.
The words I’ve been practicing all morning die on my lips.
"Can we talk?" she asks, frowning at me.
"Like, somewhere private?"
A Helluva Sister
I follow her out of the office and down the hall to the break room.
She locks the door behind us, and I watch as she leans back against it.
The fluorescent light overhead flickers a little, casting shadows across her face.
Her silver fur catches the light, and I can see every strand of it.
She takes a step toward me, and my throat tightens.
I can’t move or speak.
All I can do is watch her as she reaches out to take my hand.
Her touch sends electricity through my body, and I feel like I’m going to explode.
Without warning, she pulls her shirt over her head and unhooks her bra.
"Wait, Loona, what are you doing?" I stammer, my voice barely above a whisper.
She pauses, her eyes searching mine. "I thought this is what you wanted," she says softly, uncertainty lacing her words.
"No, I mean yes, but not like this," I reply, trying to find the right words.
I gently place my hands over hers, halting her attempt to remove her shorts, and meet her gaze with a mix of concern and affection.
The fluorescent light above us casts harsh shadows across her face, accentuating the uncertainty in her expression.
My voice trembles as I continue, "Loona, I care about you so much, but if we rush into this, it could ruin everything between us."
She pulls her hands away slightly, her ears drooping.
Then, she sits down heavily in one of the chairs at the break room table.
A Helluva Sister
I kneel beside her, still holding one of her hands.
I take a deep breath and begin to explain my true feelings.
But before I can finish, she cuts me off by yanking down her shorts anyway.
