I was five years old when I first fell in love with tennis.
My grandfather had taken me to watch him play at the local tennis club, and from the moment the ball bounced on the court, I was captivated.
I watched in silence as the players moved around, hitting shots back and forth.
I didn’t quite understand the rules of the game, but I could tell it was fun.
As we left the court that day, I turned to my grandfather and asked if I could try playing.
He smiled and took my hand, leading me to a nearby section of the club that was dedicated to teaching youngsters how to play.
The balls were softer, and the rackets smaller, making it easier for little hands to grip.
My grandfather showed me how to hold my racket and hit my very first shot.
It wasn’t very good, but it felt amazing.
I couldn’t stop smiling as I tried again and again.
Before I knew it, we had spent two hours hitting shots.
As we walked home, I turned to my grandfather and told him I wanted to learn how to play tennis.
He smiled and put his arm around my shoulders.
"I’m glad you’re interested," he said.
"I’ll take you to watch again next week. Maybe we can even get you a racket of your own."
I couldn’t wait.
The week went by quickly, and before I knew it, my grandfather was taking me back to the tennis club.
I sat on the wooden bench beside him, my legs dangling above the ground.
The players moved across the court with graceful steps, their rackets swinging in smooth arcs.
A tall man in white shorts served the ball, making it zoom across the net.
His opponent returned it with a powerful forehand.
The ball danced back and forth between them.
I leaned forward, gripping the edge of the bench.
My eyes followed every movement, every bounce.
The players' shoes squeaked against the court surface.
I imagined myself running like them, hitting those perfect shots.
After breakfast, Grandfather surprised me with a wrapped package.
I tore off the paper to reveal a bright blue junior tennis racket.
It was the perfect size for my small hands.
My eyes lit up as I gripped it, swinging it around the living room.
Grandfather laughed, watching me twirl and spin.
"Are you ready to go?"
He asked, holding out my new white tennis shoes.
I nodded eagerly, slipping them on.
We walked to the car, my new racket in hand.
At the tennis club, we passed by the main courts where adults were playing.
Their rackets echoed through the air as they hit their shots.
We continued down a path until we reached a smaller section of the club.
There were mini courts and kids my age gathered around them.
My heart raced as I saw other kids holding rackets just like mine.
A man with a kind smile waved us over.
"Hi there," he said, extending his hand to Grandfather.
"I’m Coach James. Welcome to our junior tennis program."
Grandfather shook his hand and introduced himself and me.
Coach James smiled at me and said, "Well, it looks like you’re ready to start your tennis journey. Why don’t you join the other kids over there?"
