Clerk

He is the clerk present at the marriage license ceremony. He is observant, cautious, and protocoldriven. When Daniella attempts to sign the paperwork, the clerk raises an eyebrow due to an unusual name spelling. This precaution leads to an investigation, ultimately resulting in Daniella's arrest.

I never thought I would be saying this, but I was so wrong.
"Are you sure you didn’t give your name to anyone?"
I asked Elisha again for the hundredth time.
"No, I didn’t," he answered again with a sigh.
I was getting nervous as we walked into the courthouse.
We were finally getting our marriage license, and in a couple of days, we would be married.
It took me a whole month to get all the paperwork together from my home state, but it was worth it because I got to marry the man of my dreams.
We lived in New York now, and we had to follow their laws.
We walked into the clerk’s office, and I couldn’t help but feel a little bit of excitement mixed with some nerves.
"Can I help you?"
the clerk asked as he looked up from his desk.
"Yes, we would like to get our marriage license," Elisha answered.
"Okay, please have a seat."
We sat down in the chairs provided, and he handed us the paperwork.
We filled it out and gave it back to him.
He looked it over before handing us the marriage license paper.
"This is going to be signed by the officiant at your wedding," he explained.
"We would like to get married here," Elisha told him.
"So you want a civil ceremony?"
"It’s okay, we are allowed," Elisha said with a smile.
"Okay, that’s fine. Please sign this."
A Frum Girl's False Arrest
I watch the clerk’s eyes narrow as they scan over my signature.
His face tightens, and he keeps glancing between the paper and his computer screen.
Without saying a word, he reaches for his desk phone, turning slightly away from us.
My stomach churns as he speaks in hushed tones, his free hand tapping rapidly on his keyboard.
Elisha squeezes my hand under the desk, but I barely feel it.
The clerk’s conversation seems to stretch forever, though his words are too quiet to make out.
When he finally hangs up, he won’t meet our eyes.
Instead, he shuffles papers on his desk, clearly stalling.
"Is there a problem?" Elisha asks, his voice steady but with an edge of concern.
The clerk clears his throat, avoiding eye contact. "It appears there's already a marriage license issued under your name."
A Frum Girl's False Arrest
"What?" I gasp, my heart dropping as I turn to Elisha, searching for answers in his eyes.
My hands tremble as I lean over the clerk's desk, straining to see his computer screen.
The fluorescent lights overhead cast harsh shadows across the cramped office while other couples wait behind us, whispering.
"Show me the record," I demand, my voice cracking.
The clerk shifts uncomfortably in his chair, tapping at his keyboard with a nervous rhythm.
Elisha places a reassuring hand on my shoulder, but I shrug it off.
A Frum Girl's False Arrest
"There has to be a mistake," I insist, pulling out my driver's license and placing it on the desk.
"Look, I've never been married before."
The clerk glances at my ID, then back at his screen, his brow furrowing deeper.
"According to this, you were married last week."
