I was 27 years old when I inherited my grandfather's farm.
My boyfriend, Cassian, and I had moved to Pelican Town, Stardew Valley, together.
He was a year older than me, and we both wanted a different life; away from the city and from our pasts.
We had just started building that life together when my grandfather passed away, leaving his farm to me in his will.
It was a surprise to all of us, but we took it as a sign that this was meant to be.
After all, we had just started talking about buying our dream farm one day.
Now we had one without spending a single penny.
Well, not exactly.
The farm was in bad shape, and we had to spend some money on fixing it up.
But it was still cheaper than buying a new farm would have been.
Cassian was good with his hands and took care of most of the repairs.
I helped where I could, but I wasn't as skilled as he was.
I took care of other things like buying new tools and supplies for the farm.
We worked well together and got things done quickly.
We also planned on starting our own woodworking business one day.
A Boyfriend on the Farm
After a morning of clearing the weeds from the farmland, I wiped the sweat off my forehead and told Cassian that I was going to head into town.
He was too busy fixing the roof of the chicken coop to join me, so I set off on my own.
I walked down the dirt path that led from our farm to the main road.
The sun was shining brightly, and a gentle breeze blew through the trees.
I passed by Pierre's General Store, where I would be stopping later to pick up some supplies.
As I walked further, I noticed an elderly woman tending to her garden.
She looked up and saw me approaching, so she waved at me.
I waved back and approached her white picket fence.
"Hello there, young man," she said with a smile.
"Hello," I replied.

"My name is Evelyn. What's yours?"
"I'm sorry, but I didn't catch your name," I said apologetically.
"It's Evelyn," she repeated.
"And you are?"
"I'm sorry, Evelyn, but I'm new around here. My name is Lior."
"Well, it's nice to meet you, Lior," Evelyn said warmly.
"Would you like to come in and see my garden? It's one of my favorite things in the world."
I nodded eagerly and followed her through the gate and into her garden. As we walked through the garden, Evelyn pointed out various plants and flowers that she had grown herself.
She explained how she took care of them and what she used to make them grow so well.
I listened intently as she spoke, taking in every word of advice that she gave me.
After showing me around her garden, Evelyn invited me inside for some tea and cookies.
I gratefully accepted her offer and followed her into the house.
As we sat down at her kitchen table, Evelyn asked me about myself and how I ended up in Pelican Town.
I told her about my grandfather's farm and how Cassian and I were fixing it up together.
She listened carefully as I spoke, nodding along occasionally to show that she was paying attention.
When I finished talking, Evelyn smiled at me kindly and said, "It sounds like you have a lot on your plate right now. But don't worry; things will get easier over time. Just remember to take care of yourself too."
After saying goodbye to Evelyn, I decided to explore more of the town before heading back home.
I walked down a winding path that led north out of town.
The terrain became rockier and more elevated as I went further along.
The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the ground, making it difficult to see where I was going at times.
Despite this, I continued on my way until I came across a small clearing in the woods.
In the center of the clearing was a large house made of stone and wood.
It looked old and worn down, but it still had a certain charm to it.
I approached the house cautiously, not wanting to disturb anyone who might be inside.
As I got closer, I noticed that there were patches of wild horseradish growing near the front door.
I also saw some spring onions growing next to a small pond that was located behind the house. The path leading up to the house was covered in loose gravel, which crunched under my feet as I walked towards it.
The windows were all closed, but they were still reflecting the sunlight beautifully.
I stopped at the front door and knocked loudly, hoping that someone would hear me.
After waiting for a few minutes without getting an answer, I decided to go around back and check if anyone was there.
As I turned the corner of the house, I saw a young man standing outside with his back turned towards me.
He seemed to be doing something near one of the windows, so I didn't want to startle him by calling out to him.
I approached him slowly, trying not to make any noise as I walked up behind him.
The young man must have sensed my presence because he turned around before I could reach him.
He looked at me with a mixture of surprise and curiosity on his face.
I could tell that he was wondering who I was and why I was there.
The young man was dressed in dark clothes that matched the emo kid I had seen around town earlier that day.
He had a frowning expression on his face, which made him look even more intimidating than he already did.
"Hi," I said, clearing my throat nervously.
The young man stared at me for a moment before responding.
"What do you want?" he asked gruffly.
"I'm sorry, but I didn't mean to disturb you," I replied quickly.
"I was just exploring the area and saw your house. I thought maybe someone would be home."
The young man looked away from me and back towards the window he had been working on when I arrived.
"It's okay," he muttered under his breath.
"You can go now."
I nodded and started to walk away, but then I stopped myself.
"Wait," I said, turning around to face him again.
"What's your name?"
The young man hesitated for a moment before answering me.
"Alex," he said quietly. "Okay, Alex," I said with a smile.
The young man looked at me like I was crazy.
"Why do you want to know my name?" he asked angrily.
"I just thought it would be nice to meet someone new around here," I explained.
"I'm Lior."
The young man sighed and rubbed his forehead with one hand.
"My name is Alex," he said finally.
"Nice to meet you, Alex," I said, extending my hand towards him.
Alex stared at my hand for a second before shaking it briefly.
"It's nice to meet you too, Lior," he said quietly.
I could tell that he wasn't interested in talking to me any longer, so I decided to leave him alone.

"Well, I should probably get going," I said, turning away from him once more.
"Thanks for letting me know your name."
As I walked back down the path leading away from the house, I couldn't help but wonder what had caused Alex to be so rude towards me.
Was he always like this?
Or did something happen recently that made him upset?
I didn't know much about him yet, but I hoped that maybe someday we could become friends. A few days later, I found myself returning to the old stone house again.
This time, however, I wasn't alone; Cassian had joined me on my walk through town.
We were both curious about who lived there and why they seemed so secretive.
As we approached the house, we noticed that the front door was open slightly.
We exchanged a glance and cautiously pushed the door open wider.
Inside, we saw a young man sitting on the steps leading upstairs.
He looked up at us as we entered and frowned when he realized who we were.
"Alex," Cassian said softly, recognizing him from our previous encounter.
"What are you doing here?"
Alex stood up and crossed his arms over his chest defensively.
"I live here," he replied flatly.
"Oh," Cassian said awkwardly, clearly surprised by this revelation.
"We didn't know anyone lived here."
"Yeah well now you do," Alex snapped irritably before turning away from us again. "Hey wait," I called out after him as he started climbing the stairs.
"Is everything okay?"
Alex stopped mid-step and looked back at us hesitantly.
"No," he admitted quietly after a moment of silence passed between us.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
Cassian asked gently.
Alex shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly despite clearly being upset about something.

"It's just... this place used to belong to my grandmother," Alex confessed, his voice barely above a whisper.
Cassian and I exchanged a look of understanding before Cassian spoke up.
"Maybe we can help somehow? We've been fixing up Lior's grandfather's farm, so we're pretty handy."
