I was a music student at the Chicago Academy of the Arts.
I had always dreamed of joining a band.
When I heard that Gretchen Wilson's Girlfriends were looking for a new member, I auditioned.
I didn't care what instrument I played, as long as I got to be in a band.
I was shy and quiet, but when I sang, melody poured out of me.
I knew I'd be able to contribute to the band in some way, even if it wasn't as the lead singer.
Unfortunately, my audition didn't go well.
The first time I saw Gretchen, I was struck by her beauty.
She had long blonde hair and piercing blue eyes.
She was tall and curvy, with a red dress that clung to her body in all the right places.
She looked like one of those 1950s pinup girls, if they had been created by a feminist with a sense of humor.
When she laughed, her whole body shook, and her face lit up with joy.
She was beautiful in a way that made me feel happy and sad at the same time.
I wanted to be close to her, but I knew I could never have her.
After the audition, I left the theater and walked back to the academy.
The music room was empty, so I went inside and sat down at the piano.
The late afternoon sun streamed in through the windows, casting a warm glow over the room.
I ran my fingers over the keys, playing a few notes here and there.
I was disappointed that I hadn't gotten into the band, but music had always been my refuge.
It was where I could express myself freely, without worrying about what other people thought.
I started playing a song that I had heard Gretchen's band play once before.
It was one of their lesser-known songs, called "Midnight in Chicago."
It was a melancholy tune that spoke of lost love and longing.
I sang along with the music, pouring my heart into every word.
As I played, I felt myself becoming one with the music.
My voice grew stronger and more confident with each verse.
I lost myself in the melody, letting it take me wherever it wanted. The song built to a crescendo, and I felt like I was soaring on the wings of sound.
When it finally ended, I sat back in my chair and took a deep breath.
I had never felt so alive.
I didn't notice that someone had come into the room until they spoke to me.
"Wow," said a voice behind me.
"That was amazing."
I turned around to see who it was, but there was no one there.
My heart was pounding in my chest as I scanned the room, trying to see where the voice had come from.
The late afternoon sun was shining through the windows, casting long shadows across the floor.
It was hard to see very far into the room because of the dim light.
I remained frozen at the piano bench, my fingers still hovering over the last chord I had played.
The sound of slow, deliberate footsteps echoed from the back of the room, growing louder with each step.
I held my breath, both terrified and hopeful.
As the footsteps drew closer, a silhouette took shape in the darkness near the door.
The rhythmic click of heels against the wooden floor continued until finally, Gretchen stepped into a beam of sunlight that streamed through one of the windows.
She smiled, and in that moment, everything changed.
Pulling my hands from the piano keys, I struggled to meet her gaze.
She leaned against the piano, her blonde hair catching the light as she studied me with those piercing blue eyes.
My face burned hot as I imagined her watching me pour my heart out in that song.
The silence stretched between us until finally, I managed to ask, "How long were you there?"
My voice came out shakier than I had intended, barely above a whisper.
She took a deliberate step closer, her heels clicking against the hardwood floor.
I caught a hint of her perfume - something floral and expensive.
I gripped the edge of the piano bench, anchoring myself as her words washed over me.
"I made a mistake earlier," she said, her voice smooth and confident.
She slid onto the bench beside me, her sequined dress catching the late afternoon light.
My fingers twitched toward the keys, but I kept them still.
She reached over to play the opening notes of "Midnight in Chicago," then stopped abruptly.
"We need your voice in the group," she said, her shoulder brushing mine as she turned to face me.
My heart leaped at her words, but then she added, "There's just one condition."
She reached into her purse and pulled out a polaroid photo of the band.
I sat frozen, my hands still trembling from the music.
She pointed to each member in the photo, explaining that I wouldn't replace any of them.
Sasha grinned, Jade nodded thoughtfully, and Zoey gave a warm smile.
Gretchen's voice was firm but encouraging as she outlined my temporary position.
My eyes lingered on the photo, imagining myself among them.
I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness.
Gretchen handed me the photo, saying I needed to meet them soon.
