"It just feels wrong. Like we shouldn’t be messing with this game. What if it’s cursed or something?"
Mark chuckled.
"You watch too many horror movies, Em."
His blue eyes were sparkling mischievously.
"Come on, you know I don’t believe in that stuff. It’s just a game, probably some old-school D&D thing from the seventies. Besides, haven’t you ever been curious about what’s in it? We found it in your attic, for crying out loud! It could be worth a fortune!" "That’s true," Lisa said with a nod.
"I bet there are collectors out there who would pay top dollar for this thing."
My friends were right; I was probably overthinking things as usual.
Surely there was nothing wrong with playing an old board game?
And yet…
A small voice in the back of my mind told me to stop, to put the game away and forget all about it.
But Mark and Lisa were so excited about playing that I couldn’t bring myself to disappoint them by putting an end to their fun.
Sighing inwardly, I nodded reluctantly.
"Fine," I said.
"Fine," I said, "Let’s play one round and see how it goes.
But if anything weird happens or if it gets too intense, we stop immediately.
Deal?"
Mark and Lisa exchanged a glance before nodding in agreement.
"Deal!"
I let out a sigh of relief as Mark started setting up the board on the coffee table in front of us.
The game was called Realm of Reckoning, and from what I could tell, it was some sort of fantasy-themed strategy game where players had to move their pieces around the board and defeat their opponents in order to win the game.
It looked pretty complicated, especially since none of us had ever played anything like it before, but I did my best to follow along as Mark explained the rules to us.
Mark had found the game in an ancient-looking box covered in dust and cobwebs while helping me clean out the attic earlier that day.
