With a sinking feeling in my stomach, I realized that there was only one thing left for me to do.
There was no other way out of this mess, and if I didn’t act quickly, it would be too late.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, trying to push away all of my doubts and fears.
It was now or never; this was my only chance to make things right.
When I finally opened my eyes again, I prayed that I would see what I had been hoping for.
My heart skipped a beat as I realized that my wish had come true: I was back in the past once more.
Alex stood before me, looking just as confused as he had before, but this time he wasn’t alone — Sarah was with him, giving me a suspicious look as she approached us.
"What’s going on?" he asked me warily.
"We have to go," I told them urgently, hoping that they would just trust me and follow along.
"There’s still something we need to do."
"Emily," Alex said slowly, "what are you talking about? We’ve already been over the crime scene a dozen times. There isn’t anything else here."
"I know there is," I insisted.
"Just come with me. Please."
I could see the doubt in their eyes as they looked at each other for a moment.
Finally, Sarah shook her head and turned back to me.
"Okay," she said, "let's go."
She followed me down the street without another word; after a moment’s hesitation, Alex fell into step beside her.
"Where are we going?" he asked me quietly.
"We don’t have much time left," I replied grimly.
"The police are about to arrest an innocent man for this murder. We have to find the real killer before it's too late."

"I wish I could," he told me, "but the footage is encrypted. There’s no way to hack it without being caught, and if we get arrested, there won’t be anyone to save this guy from the chair."
I bit my lip, holding back the angry retort that sprang to mind.
He was right.
We couldn’t take that risk.
If we got caught, our suspect would be found guilty by default and sentenced to death.
But if I didn’t do something soon, another innocent person would die as well: the victim’s wife.
She had been accused of the murder and was about to be executed for her "crime," but she was innocent.
The real killer had framed her to cover his tracks, and he was going to get away with it unless I did something to stop him.
Suddenly, an idea struck me — an idea so crazy that even I couldn’t believe that I was considering it.
But it might be my only chance to save this woman's life, and stop the real killer once and for all.
I took a deep breath and raised my hand to my forehead; then, before I could lose my nerve, I activated my power.
The world around me blurred for a moment before snapping back into focus again with startling clarity.
I felt a rush of adrenaline as the familiar sensation washed over me, bringing with it a sense of power and control that I had never experienced before.
The world seemed to slow down as I focused on my target, willing myself to return to the past so that I could fix this terrible mistake.
When I finally opened my eyes again, I was relieved to see that my plan had worked: I was back in the past once more.
The police officers were still securing the crime scene behind me, but there was no sign of my friends anywhere nearby — they had already left by this point in time.
Without wasting another moment, I turned and ran back down the street toward Alex’s apartment building.
I found him outside, just as he was getting ready to leave for the crime scene — my sudden appearance seemed to surprise him, and he looked at me in shock for a moment before speaking up.
"How did you get here?"
Alex demanded.
"Did we already go over this? The police won’t let us in there!"
"Not yet," I said with a grimace.
"But we need to get in there. There’s something that we missed; something important."
"What is it?" he asked me warily.
"It doesn’t matter," I told him with an urgent shake of my head.
"Emily, I don’t know what’s going on with you right now, but we can’t go in there," he said firmly as he backed away from me.
"We have to figure out how to fix this without breaking the law."
"I am trying to fix this," I told him stubbornly as I reached out to take his hand.
"Please, Alex, just trust me; follow me inside." "Emily…"
He hesitated, looking torn between wanting to help and not wanting to get arrested.
"Please!"
I begged him desperately, not caring how pathetic I sounded at that point.
With a resigned sigh, he finally nodded his head and followed me toward one of the side entrances to the building.
It was unguarded and unlocked, and we slipped inside without any difficulty at all.
The scene inside was eerily familiar, as if I had never even left in the first place; the crime scene tape was still strung up around the area where they had discovered the body only a short time ago, and everything else looked exactly as it had when I left earlier that day.
"There," I said with a grimace as I pointed to the bloody tape.
"That’s where it happened."
I looked around the room frantically, hoping to find some sign of the evidence that I needed in order to save our suspect from spending the rest of his life in jail.
"I can’t believe there’s nothing here."
"Emily, calm down," Alex said soothingly as he walked over to me and placed a comforting hand on my shoulder.
"We’re going to figure this out. Let’s just take a minute and think about this…"
"No," I told him as I shook my head.
"We don’t have time for thinking. We need to find that evidence before it’s too late."
"Okay," he agreed.
"Why don’t you keep looking around here? Maybe I missed something last time. And if you don’t find anything in here, I’ll go check out the other rooms while you try to figure out what we’re missing." "Alright," I said reluctantly, knowing that he was right.
"Just be careful."
"Don’t worry about me," he told me with a grin before turning around and walking off toward one of the other rooms.

Sarah didn’t respond to the question.
Instead, she just stared off into the distance with an almost blank expression on her face.
And that was when it finally dawned on me what had really happened; there was only one reason why Sarah would be tampering with evidence in such a way: the true killer had been her all along!
I felt like someone had just kicked me in the gut as I tried to wrap my head around the possibility.
Sarah was the murderer?
How could this be happening?
She had always been so sweet and kind before; we used to be close friends in school.
But now…she was willing to frame an innocent man for her crimes just so she could get ahead?
"Sarah," I said quietly as I continued to stare at her in disbelief.
"Is it true? Did you…?"
"Emily!"
Alex shouted from across the room before I could finish my question.
"What are you doing standing there? Let’s go! We need to hurry up and get this guy released before he gets thrown in jail!" "Oh…right," I said numbly, suddenly remembering exactly what we were supposed to be doing there in the first place.
I took one last glance at Sarah Jennings, wishing that things could have worked out differently between us, before turning around to return to the task at hand.
"Alright," I said grimly as we walked out of the room.
"Let’s get this over with. We don’t want to keep him waiting any longer than he has to."
Alex gave me a strange look as we continued on our way back down to the holding room, but he didn’t say anything else about it.
And for that, I was grateful.
I still wasn’t sure how Alex would react if he ever found out what had really happened in that evidence locker.
But it didn’t matter at that point.
All that mattered was making sure that we got the proof in question to where it needed to go so we could free our suspect before it was too late.
Alex whispered when he noticed me staring off into space beside him.
"Right," I agreed with a nod as we hurried down the hallway.
"We’ll make sure she gets what’s coming to her."
I knew that there were still a lot of things about my timebending powers that I didn’t fully understand yet—and that there would be consequences for using them in such a way—but it hardly seemed like the most important thing at that moment.
I had just discovered that Sarah Jennings, my detective rival and former friend, was actually an insane murderer who was willing to do anything in order to get ahead, even if it meant ruining someone else’s life in the process.
