I received a message from a missing author, which is weird.
But what’s weirder?
The message was directed at me.
And it sent a shiver down my spine.
Emma, it’s time to expose the truth about Rivertown.
It must have been all of those “true crime” podcasts I’d been listening to that made me paranoid.
But it’s also the tone of the message that got me worried.
He wasn’t this straightforward before.
He was always so cryptic with his messages.
Especially since his novels were often inspired by real life scandals.
And this probably wasn’t the first time he disappeared for a long time.
But this was the first time he ever mentioned Rivertown in his messages.
A writer who never wrote a novel about Rivertown, despite its history of coverups and scandals.
Yet he decided to write about it in a message to me?
The Rivertown I know is a picturesque town by the river.
But beneath its beauty?
Lies an ugly history of secrets, scandals and coverups.
It was as if the town itself was cursed.
And I can’t help but think that this message wasn’t just a simple message from a friend who wanted to expose the truth about my hometown.
Something is off about this message.
And I need to look into it more before doing anything rash.
Because this man had made a career out of exposing coverups in small towns and cities all over the country, he must have uncovered something that was so big, so dangerous that it even scared him, to send me this message.
He knew how much I hated my hometown and had promised not to write anything about it because of what it would do to my family and friends who are still living there.
If he had decided to write a book about Rivertown or even mention it in one of his novels, then something is seriously wrong with that town right now.
I picked up my phone and dialled Alex’s number.
I know he’s busy working on his lab research but if there’s anyone who can help me figure out what’s happening in Rivertown, it will be him.
“Emma,” Alex’s voice was groggy when he answered the phone, “do you know what time it is?”
“Alex, something happened,” I said quickly, “I know you’re busy but can we meet?”
“What happened?”
I can hear Alex getting out of bed now and moving around his apartment to get dressed.
And as much as I hated to do this to him, I knew he would drop everything right now to help me figure out what was going on in Rivertown.
So I told him about the message I’d received from our missing author friend.
“Okay,” Alex said after I’d explained everything.
“I’m on my way,” he said before hanging up on me.
