MidReal Story

Chapter One Mia Mia Turner had survived some nasty scrapes in her time, but this was getting ridiculous. She stood in the darkened hallway of a crumbling church, feeling around for the door handle. The door had just been wrenched off its hinges and tossed aside as if it were a piece of trash. The rude entry was characteristic of a werewolf attack, as was the thick, putrid smell of unwashed bodies and blood. But where were the wolves? And why hadn’t they attacked her yet? She found the handle and eased open the door, peering out into the night. The full moon hung high in the sky, casting a pale glow over an old cemetery and the surrounding woods. Tombstones stretched out in neat rows as far as she could see in the moonlight. The place reminded her a bit of Boot Hill, one of the first graveyards she’d ever visited as an adult. But this one was older. And while Boot Hill was situated on a lonely plain, this one was nestled in the rolling hills of Ireland. Ireland. She still couldn’t believe she was here. But she couldn’t afford to think about that now. She had to find Ethan and get back to the manor before something terrible happened. Something worse than what’s already happened to him. The thought made her shudder. He was in terrible danger, as he had been for weeks. If only he’d listen to me. If only he’d stay put, we could keep him safe. But he wouldn’t. He couldn’t. Ethan was a wanderer by nature, and he possessed a kind heart that made him want to help others even at great personal risk. He’d told her once that he and his brother Hunter were “in the business of saving souls.” That they were priests, in a way. She took a step into the night and listened hard for any sign of movement. There was nothing—no rustling of bushes, no ominous growls in the distance. She crept through the old cemetery and then dropped to her knees behind a large tombstone. She peered around it, trying to see around the side of the church. Nothing. She cursed under her breath and hunkered down behind the stone. Where were those damn wolves? She’d been attacked by them once before—why not now? Because they know you’re not alone. She closed her eyes against the sudden onslaught of memories—the sight of Ethan lying in a pool of his own blood, his skin pale and lifeless, his breathing shallow . . . then coming awake with a roar, his fangs bared. Even though she’d known he wasn’t himself, she’d been terrified for her life until he’d turned back into a man. A beautiful, flawed man who’d stolen her heart.

She opened her eyes and shook her head, as if that would make the memories go away. She didn’t have time for this. She had to find Ethan and get him back to Ravenswood Manor, safe and sound. The wind picked up, rustling the leaves in the trees and sending a chill down her spine. She winced and looked up at the moon, its round, full face shining down at her. It was only a little after three in the morning, but it was clear that she wouldn’t be getting any more sleep tonight. Not that she’d gotten much sleep at all since Ethan vanished a few days ago. He’d been gone a lot in the past year and a half, ever since he’d helped her rescue her brother Sam from a dangerous artifact hunter named Roland. Ethan had taken it upon himself to teach her how to defend herself, but more important, how to protect her mind from psychic attacks. He was powerful and strong and incredibly hard to kill, but he’d warned her that his enemies would try to use her against him.She was one of the few people who knew about his special abilities—and about his supernatural friends, such as the werewolves who lived in a remote part of New York State. In fact, she’d just come from New York City and had spent weeks with those werewolves trying to uncover the origins of an ancient artifact they’d found buried deep in the earth. An artifact that had almost killed us all.But just when they thought they were making progress, Ethan had vanished while on a walk near their compound. They’d searched high and low for him but had found no trace of him. He’d left behind his wallet and his cell phone, and there was no sign of foul play.
