In case you ever doubted the truth of those lines, let me introduce myself: I’m Alex Johnson and I have been the best friend of Sarah Thompson since we were both in the same kindergarten class.
Since then, our lives have been filled with every emotion, every laugh, every tear, and every triumph that two people who are as close as brother and sister could possibly experience growing up in a small, sleepy town called Willow Creek.
From sharing toys in preschool to sharing secrets in high school, we’ve been through it all together.
We’ve often been asked how two people of the opposite sex can be so close without being romantically involved, but we just laugh at the question because we know that there will never be anything more than friendship between us (and that we are also the exception to that rule).
I met Sarah when she ran to jump on one of those springy horses on giant metal coils during recess and landed on my foot.
She still swears it was an accident.
I’m not so sure.
Best friends for life!
Sarah is the yin to my yang, a small girl in stature with big brown eyes and brown hair that curls at her shoulders when she’s in a great mood.
She is the life of any party and can make any conversation enjoyable because her laughter is infectious.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen her truly mad, and she’s very rarely sad.
She will do anything for anyone at any time, no matter what she’s doing or what it costs her.
I am very protective of her because she is not naïve, but she does believe in the good of people until they prove her wrong.
I have no idea what I would do without her.
Like when I had to move away for a few years right after junior high.
That was rough but only because I wasn’t here with her.
We talked all the time on the phone, but it just wasn’t the same as being right next door like we were used to.
I’ve missed her more than I can ever explain.
Sarah has had a few boyfriends over the years, and I’ve had a few girlfriends, but we’ve always been each other’s first call when something was wrong or we needed advice.
That fact has made a lot of people around us jealous over the years.
They’ve always wanted what we have, but they don’t understand that it can’t be duplicated or manufactured.
Sarah and I are just like two peas in a pod, and there is no one else like her (or me) for that matter.
She is my best friend, and she always will be.
I don’t know where I’d be without her.
It’s weird to think about now, but then again, I didn’t know what love was then and I sure as hell didn’t know how much I loved her until I had to move away for a few years after junior high.
In a small town like Willow Creek, our friendship has always been a big deal.
We’ve grown up together and seen each other through a lot.
All through school, we got good grades, and we liked most of our teachers.
There were only a few we didn’t like, and they didn’t like us either.
In high school we both discovered our love for sports, and as luck would have it, we were good at them too!
We were recruited by our coaches freshman year and played varsity sports all four years of high school.
