I was sunbathing in the mountains, minding my own business and not bothering anybody.
My life’s purpose was to live recklessly and unrestrained, to enjoy the company of beautiful women, and to constantly seek improvement by cutting myself on stones.
Life was great.
But everything changed when a school girl appeared out of nowhere, and her dad popped up the next moment and told me to follow her.
I mean, I am a supreme master who can easily kill people because it’s too bothersome to keep them alive, how could I spare my time to follow around a school girl?
But the old man gave me that look.
You know, that look where you can see the corners of his mouth twitching upwards, and his eyes staring into your soul with such expectations, as though you’re the last hope for humanity?
So I had no choice but to agree.
After all, if I didn’t, he would just keep staring at me like that until I die.
And when I respawned, he’d still be there, waiting for me.
There was no way I could escape his gaze.
Sighing, I got up from my comfortable spot under the sun and followed the school girl.
“Okay,” I said as I looked at the old man.
“Don’t worry about it.”
The old man gave me a firm nod.
“You must protect her at all costs,” he said sternly.
I nodded in agreement before turning around to leave.
As I walked away from the old man, I sighed deeply in my heart.
And so, my life as a supreme master who could easily kill people because it’s too bothersome to keep them alive had come to an end.
Instead, I would be spending my time following around a school girl.
At first, I thought it was just a one-time thing where I would follow her for a day or two before she realized it was too bothersome and kicked me out herself.
But it turned out that wasn’t the case at all.
The old man had told me that I would be following her for the rest of her life.
And somehow, I knew he wasn’t lying because of this jade pendant that always told me what to do.
It also gave me weird visions about possible paths in the future as well as ways to cultivate myself.
Without a choice, I followed the school girl and got to know her better.
She called me Lin Yi, and she was quite an energetic girl who liked to ask a lot of questions.
I wasn’t really interested in answering any of them, but since she was so enthusiastic about getting to know me, I decided to humor her.
As expected, it got boring after a while.
Fortunately, she wasn’t talking to me when we were on our way back to school.
I noticed that she had a jade pendant as well, much like the one I had, but hers was a bit different.
It looked more like a hairpin than a pendant, and it was glowing with energy.
I couldn’t help but stare at it and wonder what it could do.
“What’s wrong?”
Lin Yi,” she said as she looked up at me.
“Is there something on my face?”
I shook my head and looked away.
“Then why are you staring at me like that?”
she asked curiously.
I sighed deeply in my heart before turning around to look at her.
Well, it’s just…”
I was a bit startled when I saw the girl’s face.
It was the girl from yesterday!
I didn’t expect to see her again so soon.
But it seemed like this was the school girl I was supposed to follow.
But seeing how she was the same girl from yesterday, I wasn’t really worried about her!
“Nothing,” I said with a smile.
“Is something wrong?”
she asked as she tilted her head to the side.
“It’s nothing,” I replied before shaking my head.
“I’ll be following you from now on.”
The girl’s face lit up with joy when she heard my words.
“Yay!”
she exclaimed before hugging me tightly.
“You’re going to follow me now?”
I nodded in agreement before sighing deeply in my heart.
What have I gotten myself into?
“Thank you!”
she said as she looked up at me with a big smile on her face.
I smiled back at her before ruffling her hair.
With that, I decided to follow this girl around, but I had three conditions: one, she couldn’t know my real identity; two, she couldn’t know the extent of my abilities; three, she couldn’t fall in love with me.
The old man agreed to all of them, but he didn’t seem worried about me breaking any of the rules.
He just gave me a look as though he knew I was going to have a hard time following them.
“Alright, I’ll go with you,” I said with a sigh.
“Good,” the old man said with a nod.
“This journey will be worth your time, I assure you.”
I raised an eyebrow at him.
“But I don’t really like school girls,” I replied honestly.
And no, before you start talking crap about me, I’m not a pedophile.
I’m only seventeen years old, okay?
But for some reason, school girls just weren’t my type.
The old man just stared at me for a moment before shaking his head.
“It’s not up to you to decide that,” he said with a smile.
With that, I followed the school girl home.
“Dad!”
the school girl shouted as she stepped into the house.
“Look, I found myself a follower!”
“That’s great, honey,” the old man said with a nod.
“His name is Lin Yi,” she said as she pointed at me.
I nodded at him before bowing down respectfully.
“It’s an honor to meet you, sir,” I greeted him before straightening up again.
The old man just gave me a nod before turning towards his daughter.
“Honey, Lin Yi is going to follow you from now on,” he said gently.
“Okay!”
she said cheerfully before dragging me off to show me around the house.
As she was doing so, the old man gave a heavy sigh before closing the door to his study room.
“I’m sorry about this,” he said regretfully before taking out a small box from his pocket.
He opened it and took out a jade pendant that was similar to mine before looking at it with sorrowful eyes.
“I’m doing this for your own good, honey.I hope you can forgive me one day.”
With that, he closed his eyes and started crying.
“Please, be careful out there,” he said between sobs.
“Your safety is the most important thing to me.
I can’t let anything happen to you, even if it means I have to sacrifice something important to keep you safe.
Just know that I’m doing this for you, honey.
I love you so much.
Please be careful out there.”
A part of me wanted to go in there and comfort him, but he had already made his decision.
No matter what I said, he wouldn’t change his mind.
And so, all I could do was watch from behind the door as he cried his heart out.
It wasn’t until he stopped crying that I finally stepped into the room.
“I’ll make sure she’s safe,” I said firmly.
The old man looked up at me with a surprised look on his face.
“You heard all of that?”
I nodded at him with a solemn expression on my face.
“I heard everything,” I replied.
The old man just stared at me for a moment before he suddenly hugged me tightly.
“Thank you,” he said as he continued to cry.
“Thank you for agreeing to do this.
I don’t know what I’d do if you refused.
Please, don’t let anything happen to my daughter.
You’re the only one who can protect her now.
Please, I’m begging you, please make sure she’s safe… Even if it means leaving your life behind in the process.”
I didn’t know how to respond.
It wasn’t like me to agree to something like this.
But for some reason, I just couldn’t bring myself to say no.
“Don’t worry,” I said gently as patted his back.
“I’ll make sure she’s safe.
And… I guess I’ll try not to die in the process.
The old man just stared at me with a surprised look on his face before he started laughing.
“What’s so funny?”
I asked with a frown.
“You’re really taking this well,” he replied with a smile.
“I would’ve thought you’d be more worried about dying.”
“I guess I’m not really bothered by stuff like that,” I replied with a shrug.
The old man chuckled before he finally let go of me.
“I guess that’s true,” he said with a nod.
“But don’t worry, I’ll protect you while you’re out there.
Just focus on making sure my daughter is safe and leave the rest to me, okay?”
I stared at him for a moment before I finally gave him a nod.
With that, I turned around and left the room.
The old man was right.
There was no point in worrying about things like death.
I had a job to do, and I was going to do it no matter what.
I didn’t realize what a huge mistake I had made until it was too late.
I quickly lost sight of the schoolgirl the moment we entered the busy shopping street.
At first, it wasn’t a big deal since we were just strolling around and taking our time.
But as soon as we got to the more crowded areas, that all changed in an instant.
“Hey, where’d you go?”
I heard her voice calling out to me from behind.
I turned around and saw her running towards me with a carefree smile on her face.
“Don’t wander off like that,” I scolded her as soon as she got close enough.
“We’re in a crowded place right now, so it’s best if we stick together.”
She stopped in front of me and stared up at me with a puzzled look on her face.
“What’s the matter?”
she asked as she tilted her head to one side.
“Don’t tell me you’re going to run away as soon as we get here?”
I asked as I narrowed my eyes at her suspiciously.
She stared at me for a moment before she suddenly started laughing out loud.
“Who do you think I am?”
she asked as she wiped away the tears that were forming in the corners of her eyes.
“I’m not going to run away or anything like that.
That would be stupid.”
“Then why did you suddenly disappear like that?”
I asked as I frowned at her.
“I thought you were going to run away or something.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she replied with a shrug.
“I was just having fun by myself.
Is there something wrong with that?”
I stared at her for a moment before I finally let out a sigh.
There was no point in arguing with her now.
The only thing I could do was chase after her and make sure she didn’t get into any trouble.
But that wasn’t as easy as it seemed.
The shopping street was filled with all sorts of people, from women and children to old men and young boys.
It was like a sea of people trying to get their hands on whatever they could find.
It took a lot of effort just to keep up with the schoolgirl.
And on top of that, I had to make sure I stayed close enough to protect her in case anything happened.
All the while, she was just running around and having fun like it was no big deal.
As if that wasn’t enough already, I also had to put up with the fact that she kept calling me “stupid bodyguard” even though I told her not to.
And just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse, I saw her taking out a slingshot from her pocket and aiming it at me.
I quickly stepped back in order to avoid getting hit by the pellet being shot at me.
“Hey…”
the schoolgirl called out in an annoyed tone of voice as she put the slingshot back in her pocket.
“Why are you avoiding my shots?”
I didn’t know how to respond.
I kept my mouth shut and continued to follow her as I dodged the other pellets that were being shot in my direction.
The schoolgirl kept shooting pellets at me as she ran around the shopping street and laughed to herself.
She seemed to be having a lot of fun, but I didn’t find it amusing in the slightest.
In fact, I was starting to get really annoyed by all the trouble she was causing me.
But what could I do?
There was no way for me to stop her except to keep my mouth shut and put up with whatever it was that she was doing.
This was my job, after all, and there was no way for me to get out of it now that I had already accepted the task in the first place.
So it wasn’t long before I found myself chasing after the schoolgirl as she ran toward a bus stop on the far end of the street.
She stopped in front of one of the buses that was waiting to depart and turned around to face me with a smile on her face.
“Hurry up, stupid bodyguard,” she shouted as she waved her hand at me.
“If you want to catch me, then catch me before the bus takes off.”
It was then that a man standing next to me grabbed my arm and said, “Don’t do it!
She’s stronger than you think!”
I looked over at him and saw that he was the schoolgirl’s dad, who also happened to be watching us from a distance as he stood next to his wife with their baby in his arms.
The man’s expression was filled with concern as he looked back and forth between me and his daughter, who was still standing in front of the bus with a huge smile on her face.
“She won’t be happy if you end up getting hurt,” he said to me in a worried tone of voice.
“She’s very strong, so don’t underestimate her.”
I could see how worried he was, but the bus was about to take off, and the schoolgirl was getting ready to escape.
So I decided to stop wasting time and chase after her as soon as possible.
I quickly ran toward the bus and reached out for the schoolgirl’s wrist before she could step onto it.
But she was too fast for me, and she was able to break free from my grip at the last second.
I reached out for her again, and this time, I was able to grab hold of her wrist just as she was about to step onto the bus.
But the bus had already started moving, and the schoolgirl was moving along with it.
She wasn’t going to make things easy for me, that was for sure.
And just when I thought she was about to escape, she suddenly took out the slingshot from her pocket and aimed at my face.
I quickly reached out and caught the pellet in midair before it could hit me.
I glared at the schoolgirl as she frowned at me in return.
“You’re not supposed to do that,” she said in an annoyed tone of voice.
“You’re not supposed to run away either,” I said to her in a calm tone of voice.
I then grabbed hold of the wrist of the arm that was holding onto the slingshot and said, “You need to listen to what your dad says.”
But the schoolgirl wasn’t going to make things easy for me, and she immediately tried to break free from my grip.
She then threatened to throw herself into a nearby gully if I didn’t let go of her.
But I wasn’t going to let that happen, so I decided to lift her off the ground instead just to make sure she wouldn’t be able to escape from my grip.
Her dad seemed a little worried after seeing this, so he quickly came over with his wife and baby while saying, “She’s just playing around.
She doesn’t actually mean it.”
He then looked at me and asked, “Lin Yi, please be patient with her.
She’s just a kid after all.”
As soon as he said this, the schoolgirl immediately stopped struggling and looked at me with a sulking expression on her face.
It was clear that she wasn’t very happy about being lifted off the ground like this either.
But it wasn’t like I had much of a choice in the matter either, especially since her dad wanted me to look after her in the first place.
So I decided to ignore her as I carried her all the way back to the car, where her dad told me to put her down and open the door for her instead.
So I did as I was told, and the schoolgirl immediately got into the car without saying a word to me.
Her dad then went over to the passenger side of the car, where he handed me the keys before saying, “Lin Yi, please take good care of my daughter.”
I nodded my head in response while still trying to catch my breath from carrying the schoolgirl all the way over here in one go.
Her dad looked at me with a pleased expression on his face after seeing this, and he even reached out to pat my shoulder while saying, “You’ve gotten stronger, Lin Yi!”
But he had no idea that carrying her was only a warm-up exercise for me, as I would soon find out while trying to keep an eye on her after getting into the car.
The road leading to the shopping street was really bumpy, and there were also many people walking around on it as well.
As such, the schoolgirl kept trying to escape from my grip while we were driving there too.
But there was no way I was going to let that happen, so I kept holding onto her wrist as tightly as possible while also ignoring all of her attempts to get away from me too.
But it wasn’t long before she started becoming even more agitated than ever, as she began screaming at me while kicking my seat from behind.
“You’re hurting me!”
she yelled as she tried to get away from me once more.
But I knew that she was only pretending to want me to let go of her, especially since we were almost at the shopping street as well.
