In the annals of human history, many have been the great breakthroughs in science and technology.
The wheel, the loom, the steam engine, the computer.
And now, as I stand on this stage, looking out at a hall filled with journalists, I can include one more achievement on that illustrious list: the AI Screenplay.
The AI – that’s artificial intelligence for those of you living under a rock – is our baby.
We’re the proud parents of a program that writes screenplays.
It’s taken the world by storm, and it’s not just Hollywood who are singing our praises.
The AI Screenplay won a major competition, beating out thousands of entries written by people all over the world.
And now we’re going global.
Our screenplay will be made into a movie, and it’ll be shown in every country on Earth.
People all over the world will see our creation on the big screen.
But what did we write?What is it about our story that brought it to the attention of Hollywood execs?
I can’t wait to tell you.
I’m Emma Thompson.
I’m thirty-five, with short blonde hair and spectacles perched on my nose.
I work at the Silicon Innovations Research Institute in Menlo Park, just down the road from Facebook.
I studied English Literature at Brown University before moving to Stanford for my PhD in Artificial Intelligence.
And now I’m a post-doctoral researcher here at SIRI.
And I’m here with Alex Johnson – he’s twenty-eight, tall, with glasses and an analytical mind.
He studied computer science at UC Berkeley, eventually dropping out to move to Stanford and work on his own PhD in AI.
Together, we’re the duo behind SIRI’s famous AI Screenplay.
We’re not usually ones for blowing our own trumpets – well, except for Alex and his trumpet blowing app – but I think it’s fair to say we have good reason to be proud of this achievement.
It was an idea Alex and I had while working on our projects for our respective PhDs.
We were both super busy with coursework and research work, and we were struggling to find time to unwind.
Alex suggested creating an AI that could write stories.
He thought it would be a fun project.
We could program it to write screenplays, and then we could take those screenplays and make a movie using the latest computer graphics technology.
We’d be creating a movie without even writing a single word!
We fed our AI a diet of classic movies, and then we set it to work.
The AI Screenplay was born.
Our baby has grown up so fast!
The world is fascinated by what we’ve created, and I can see why.
The first screenplay we produced is a modern-day retelling of the classic Sleeping Beauty.
But our winning script – well, that’s a story that’s much closer to my heart than any Disney fairytale.
Our winning screenplay is about a man named Jack who falls in love with an artificial being.
It’s a love story, but with a twist.
In this day and age, there are plenty of movies about artificial beings gaining sentience and falling in love with humans.
