I was born in the late 90s in a small town in China.
Since I could remember, my life had always been planned out by my parents.
They chose my extracurricular activities, my sports, even who I could and could not hang out with.
As I grew older, this extended to my career and eventually my marriage.
My parents were not evil, they just believed they knew what was best for me.
And for the most part they did.
But as I got older I began to realize that what they thought best for me wasn’t necessarily what I wanted for myself.
I wanted to make my own choices and live my own life.
I wasn’t sure if this was something that I would be able to do.
"Perhaps one day you will find a way," Mei Li told me as we sat in her room.
Mei Li was my best friend.
We had met on our first day of kindergarten and were inseparable ever since.
She was the exact opposite of me.
While I was reserved and cautious, Mei Li was outgoing and adventurous.
She had a small room in the back of her family’s house.
It was decorated with all sorts of things that she had collected over the years.
There were pictures of us on the wall, along with a few of her favorite celebrities.
Her bed was covered in a bright pink comforter and there were stuffed animals scattered all over it.
In the corner of the room there was a small desk where she did her homework.
The room smelled like jasmine tea, which Mei Li loved to drink.
Mei Li and I sat on her bed, sipping tea and talking about our lives.
I told her about my parents and how they were always trying to control me.
She listened intently as I spoke.
When I finished she nodded sympathetically.
"I know how you feel," she said.
"My parents are always trying to tell me what to do too. But I have learned that sometimes you just have to do what you want."
I sighed.
"That is easier said than done."
Mei Li smiled mischievously.
"You need to meet Mary," she said.
Mary was a mutual friend of ours who had moved away a few years ago.
She was known for being very independent and doing her own thing, even if it wasn’t what others thought she should be doing. "I would like that," I told Mei Li.
Mary lived in the city, so we made plans to meet up with her the next day.
We decided to meet at a small café downtown that Mary knew well.
The café was busy when we arrived, but Mary found us right away and waved us over to a table in the back.
She looked different than I remembered her, more confident and self-assured.
She told us about how she had been living on her own since she moved to the city and how much she enjoyed it.
Mary told us about all of the things she had learned since moving away from home, like how to cook and clean for herself.
She also told us about all of the new people she had met and the fun things they had done together. As Mary spoke, I found myself becoming more inspired by her words.
I realized that maybe I could make my own choices after all, even if they weren’t what my parents wanted for me.
