The wine bar was packed when I arrived, and I was lucky to find a seat at the bar.

It was a Friday night, and it seemed like everyone was trying to get drunk after a long week.
I ordered a glass of wine and swirled the liquid around in my mouth, savoring the taste.
But the ambiance of the bar was what made me stay, and before I knew it, I had finished my glass before ordering another.
“I see that you started without me,” Sarah laughed as she sat down next to me.
I grinned at my best friend and signaled the bartender to get her a glass of wine too.
“Sorry, I’m a lonely alcoholic,” I quipped.
Sarah and I met in college, and we’ve been best friends ever since.
She had just gotten married last year, and I was so happy for her.
Her husband, Jake, was a great guy, and he treated her well.

“So how have you been, Em?”
I’ve missed you so much!”
Sarah exclaimed as she took a sip of her wine.
“I know, I know,” I replied miserably.
We live in different states now, so it’s really hard for us to meet up as often as we used to.
“Don’t be like that!”
Sarah smacked my shoulder playfully before downing half of her glass of wine in one go.
“It’s not like we’re never going to see each other again.”
“I know,” I sighed.
“But I still miss you.”
“Don’t worry.” Sarah patted my back before refilling half of the wine she’d just drunk from her glass again.
“You can come over anytime.”
“Thanks, Sarah.” I smiled at her gratefully before taking another sip of my own wine.
“So how about you?”
Sarah asked as she turned to face me.
“How’s life treating you?”
“It’s… It’s fine.” I forced a smile onto my face before taking another gulp of my drink and setting it down on the counter with a loud thud.
“But come on.” Sarah’s eyes were filled with concern when she looked at me.
“You can tell me anything!”
I smiled at Sarah, touched by her concern.
But the truth was, I didn’t have that much to tell her.
I was doing well at work, and for the most part, my life was pretty mundane.
Which was one of the reasons why I was in the wine bar tonight.
I wanted something exciting to happen in my dull life, even if it was just for one night.
“I’m fine, really.” I reached out and patted Sarah’s hand.
I was grateful for having such an open friend, one who was always ready to lend an ear no matter what I needed.
But I just didn’t have anything to tell her right now.
“So you’re doing great with your job as usual, right?”
Sarah asked with a twinkle in her eye.
I nodded as I took another swig of my drink.
I worked as a designer in a small advertising company, and so far, my career had been going smoothly.
“You know it,” I replied with a smile.
“But it’s just not very exciting, you know?
I feel like I’m wasting away my youth sitting in front of a computer all day!”
“Nonsense!”

Sarah shook her head vehemently, the blond strands of her hair swaying back and forth energetically.
“Your job is great, and I’m sure you’re doing a great job with it too!”
“Thanks, Sarah.” I reached out and squeezed her hand again before taking another sip of my drink.
“But you know what I mean, right?”
Sarah was about to reply when her phone rang, the loud sound cutting through our conversation and bringing us both to a halt.
She took her phone out of her purse and glanced at the screen before turning back at me with a mysterious look on her face.
“Oh, that’s weird.” Sarah’s lips were pursed as she put the phone down on the counter.
“I just received a text message from Alex Johnson, my old classmate.”
“Alex Johnson…”
I repeated his name dumbly, my chest growing tight as a flood of memories rushed into my mind.
Sarah was scrolling through her phone, probably looking for the message as my mind wandered back to the past.
Alex Johnson was my first love, the guy I dated during college.
We met during my second year at college, and we hit it off from the very beginning.
He was tall, with an athletic build and brown hair that made him look super charming.
And I was immediately smitten with him the moment I met him.
We started dating after we’d been friends for a while, and the relationship was pretty intense for the most part.
We were both young and in love, and we often found ourselves lost in our own little world, not caring about what was happening around us.
But things had slowly changed after we graduated from college.
Alex had been offered a job in another city, while I stayed in our hometown because I had already gotten an offer from a local company by then.

We’d both agreed on trying a long-distance relationship at first, but it was much harder than we thought it would be.
We’d fought all the time, and eventually, things between us just fell apart.
It wasn’t until later that I realized Alex had always been insecure about our relationship, feeling like he was holding me back from pursuing my dreams.
I’d tried to talk him out of it, but he’d been adamant about his decision, and in the end, we’d broken up on bad terms.
I was still hurt by what had happened between us, but I’d made a choice to focus on my career and move on from Alex.
I’d buried my feelings for him deep down inside me so that I wouldn’t have to think of him anymore.
But somehow, the memories of Alex came flooding back when Sarah mentioned his name earlier, and now that she was talking to him, I had no idea how to react at all.
“Em?”
Sarah’s voice was tinged with concern when she saw my expression change so suddenly.
“Are you okay?”
“Uh…”
I blinked before looking up at her with a wry smile on my face.
“I’m sorry.” I forced a laugh before brushing my hair behind my ear nervously.
“I was just…so surprised.”
“Oh my gosh, don’t be!”
Sarah waved her hand frantically as she explained herself to me in a rush.

“I was actually going to suggest that we should catch up with him later, but I didn’t expect to find him at this wine bar of all places!”
I felt like I’d just been hit by a bolt of lightning when I heard that.
I had no idea how I would react once I saw Alex in person again after so many years of silence between us, and for a second, I thought my heart had stopped beating altogether.
“Em?”
Sarah’s voice called out to me again, and I turned to look at her with wide eyes, only to see her frowning at me in suspicion.
“What’s wrong?”
“N-nothing,” I stammered, trying to smile at her again even though I felt like my whole world was about to crumble into pieces any second now.
“What did he say?”
“He…”
Sarah trailed off as her eyebrows furrowed together in thought.
“He said that he’s already here with his colleagues. He asked if he could join us for a drink,” she explained.
“I said yes, of course! Why not? It’s been so long since you last saw him!Come on, let’s go say hi!”
I felt like I was frozen in place as I watched Sarah stand up and wave her hand at me impatiently, telling me to get up from my seat and go see Alex with her.
My heart felt like it was going to explode any second now as my mind raced with a million thoughts per minute, trying to figure out what to do about the situation I’d found myself in now that Alex was back in town and standing right next to me after all these years apart from each other.
The truth was…I wasn’t sure if I wanted to see Alex again after what happened between us all those years ago when we were still young and naïve and deeply in love with each other.
Mostly, I wasn’t sure if I could still hold myself together once I saw his face in person again, because even now, when I thought about him, the memories of our past kept coming back to me as if they’d only happened yesterday, instead of being locked up in a corner of my heart for years on end like I’d always thought they were.
Then, before I knew it, I heard someone clear their throat right next to me, and I blinked as I caught sight of Alex looking down at me with a shy smile on his face as he greeted me softly, “Hey.”
