“You could snag a rugby player with your cooking skills, Liv,” my friend says while looking out over the water.
I’m standing at the stern rail of the ferry, taking in the beautiful view.
I’m not really sure why I have to cook for them, but it’s for charity.
I like to bake, and the least I can do is donate some of my time.
Besides, it’s for a good cause.
Anything for charity and all that.
“Right,” I say, “because the only way a man would ever be interested in me is if I cooked for him.”
“Hey, you’re pretty and smart and independent,” she says.
“I’ve never understood those women who need a man to take care of them.
You don’t need that.
The right guy will come along one day.
And who knows?
It could be one of those rugby players.”
“Doubt it,” I say, dismissing them entirely.
“I’ll just keep to myself.”
“Keep putting yourself out there,” another friend says.
You never know when you might meet someone.”
I love being out on the water, but it’s getting cold, and we aren’t moving yet.
I decide to join my friends in the coffee shop for a warm drink while we wait for the boat to take off.
I’m standing in line when one of the guys from the charity match walks in with his friends.
They’re all very good-looking, but they’re also rugby players, so they’re probably arrogant assholes too.
They’re here for the same reason we are, catching a ride to the island where the game will be played, and they’re talking about how they plan to spend their time there before heading back to the mainland tonight.
One of them mentions going to a party tonight, but he doesn’t say where.
It’s not like any of us would be invited anyway, so it doesn’t really matter.
I order my drink and go sit with my friends at one of the empty tables near the window.
They join me soon after.
“How are you and Liam?”
they ask.
We aren’t together.”
“I thought you were seeing each other.”
“We’ve been out a few times.
But he’s not looking for anything serious.
He’s one of those arrogant assholes I just mentioned.
He plays on a team with some of those guys.”
“But he’s not an arrogant asshole?”
“I mean, he’s charming,” I say.
“He’s insufferable, but he’s also charming.”
One of them mentions something about her latest dating escapades, and they talk about it until their coffee is gone.
They decide to get another round while I sit here alone, staring out over the water.
The ferry is moving now.
I watch as we pass by another boat.
There are some people on the upper deck taking pictures of us, some of them waving at us as if they know us.
A man comes up to me and leans against the rail next to me.
He looks at me and smiles.
“Do you come here often?”
