The bell above the door tolled my entrance into the store.
I waved at Mark, the owner, and my best friend since college, and made my way to the back where he was unloading a new shipment of books.
“Hey, what’s up?
You excited about this new delivery?”
“You could say that,” he said, pulling out a heavy box and setting it on the counter.
My curiosity piqued, I glanced at the box, noting the logo of the Canadian publisher.
“No way!”
“Way,” he said with a mischievous smile.
I tried to get more information out of him, but he wouldn’t budge.
Mark was always a stickler for details when it came to his business.
He loved being in the know and was always looking for ways to expand his inventory or improve his offerings.
I was dying of curiosity, but Mark kept his lips sealed until he’d finished unloading the boxes.
“Okay, spill it,” I said when he finally closed the knife and tossed it aside.
“What’s in the box?”
“You sure you want to know?”
he asked, one eyebrow raised.
“Whatever’s in there has you all worked up.” I fisted my hands on my hips and gave him my best disgruntled look—his words, not mine—until he finally cracked.
He reached for the top box and pulled out a book with a plain black cover and no title or author listed.
“This is what has me worked up.”
“What is it?”
I asked, leaning closer to take a better look.
“It’s a banned book.”
“A what?”
“It’s a book that’s been banned in thirteen countries.” He clucked his tongue and shook his head.
“Because that really works.”
“I can’t say I’ve ever heard of such a thing.”
“You’ve never heard of 7/7/7?”
“There are a hundred books on the 7/7/7 list, Alice.I can’t keep track of them all.”
“It’s not like that.” He sighed and set the book back in the box.
“It’s a special list of books that are so extreme in nature that they’ve been banned worldwide.
The authors have to be famous, with at least a certain number of bestsellers already under their belts, so that their fans will want this book no matter what.
It has to be published in all thirteen countries on the same day.
And it has to be marked as a banned book or the list is void.
” He picked up the book and held it out.
“And this is one of the most extreme books ever written, Alice.”
“What’s it about?”
“You don’t want to know,” he said with a snort.
“Trust me on this one.”
He put the book back in the box, then reached for another.
I grabbed his arm before he could pull it out.
“There are only twelve copies available.
We sold one this morning, so that leaves eleven.
When they’re gone, that’s it.
We can’t get any more.”
“How did you get them?
How did you even know about the book in the first place?”
“I had a friend in Canada call me last week.
This book was part of our latest shipment, but I wasn’t aware of its existence until after it arrived.
