Walking alone through the Lower East Side of New York City after leaving a gala, I regretted my decision to take a shortcut through a narrow alleyway.
The alleyway was dimly lit, and I couldn’t see more than ten feet ahead.
The sound of my high heels clacking against the cobblestones echoed off the surrounding brick walls, and my heart raced as I picked up my pace.
I’d been warned never to walk alone through this neighborhood at night, but I was a grown woman who lived in New York City for years.
What could possibly happen to me?
I’d walked only a few steps when I heard a noise behind me and glanced over my shoulder.
A man emerged from the shadows, his dark clothes blending into the night.
He was at least six feet tall with broad shoulders and a long black coat that billowed out behind him.
His head was down, and he’d pulled up the white collar of his turtleneck sweater, effectively obscuring his face.
The man stepped out of my way, blocking my path.
“Evening, miss,” he said in a gruff voice.
I tried to sidestep him, but he moved in front of me again.
“Is there something I can help you with?”
I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
“I’m in a hurry.”
He reached out and took my arm in his hand, squeezing it hard before he released it.
He had only one hand in his pocket, but I imagined he was holding a knife or some type of weapon.
My heart pounded in terror, and I knew I had to get away from him fast.
As calmly as possible, I said, “I don’t have much money on me, but you can take whatever you want.”
I reached for my wallet and pulled it out of the small clutch purse that dangled from a chain on my wrist.
I opened it and showed it to him.
I don’t have any cash, but there’s twenty dollars in here along with some credit cards and identification.
You can take it all if you promise not to hurt me.”
He chuckled and shook his head, then motioned for me to give him my purse and phone.
I took a step back.
“I can’t do that,” I said.
“Please don’t make me give them to you.”
With a sudden jerk of his hand, he grasped the chain of my purse and yanked it from my grip.
He tossed it to the side and then reached for my phone.
I grabbed his wrist before he could take it.
“Don’t touch me!”
I warned in a loud voice, praying someone would hear me.
I held out my phone to him.
You can have it, but please don’t hurt me.”
The man’s lips curled into a snarl as he stared at me.
His eyes were cold and dark, reminding me of a shark’s.
He removed the one hand from his pocket and took hold of my wrist with both hands, tightening his grip until I thought he might snap it.
I tried to pull away from him, but he held me hostage in place.
I looked up and down the alley, hoping someone would come along and save me.
But there was no one there.
