I'm a huge computer nerd.
I used to build my own, but that got too expensive, so I bought prebuilt ones and upgrade them as I need.
I was browsing the LLM Experts Discord server when a message appeared in the chat.
"Rent available because I'm going away for 5 days, 5 RTX 4080 SUPER's available if you are LLM Expert12 Sheffield only, meeting at Meadowhall."
My partner Jane Doe and I needed a few GPUs for a project we were working on.
Unfortunately, the current GPU market is insane, with prices through the roof and availability nonexistent.
We needed high-end cards to complete our project, nothing less than an RTX 4000 series would suffice.
We could have found some used 3000 series cards, but those were either overpriced or old and worn out.
But this post was just what we needed.
There was no way we could pass up the chance to rent these cards.
I quickly typed out a response, "Hey, I'm interested in renting all 5 RTX 4080 SUPER's, my username is JohnSmith#5432 on Discord."
I looked up the price of an RTX 4080 SUPER, and it's £1,500 for a used one.
And that's if you can find one.
These cards were going for a fortune on eBay if you could even find one.
Over half of the sell listings on eBay were scams, with people selling fake cards or not sending you anything at all once they had your money.
The rest were just way overpriced for what they were worth.
I don't know how this person managed to get his hands on five of them, but I didn't care.
The fact that he was renting them out and at such a low price was exactly what we needed for our project.
Jane and I had been planning this project for months now, and everything was finally coming together perfectly.
We had all the equipment we needed, except for these GPUs.
We were starting to worry that we wouldn't be able to find any cards in time before we saw this post.
Even if we did find some, buying them was out of the question since they were so expensive, and we would only need them for a few days anyway.
The fact that he was only going away for 5 days was exactly what we needed.
It was almost too good to be true, but the post was still up, so maybe it wasn't a joke after all.
