I was not happy.
I was also not in my element.
I was not a suit guy, and the one I was currently wearing felt more like a straitjacket than a fashion statement.
Too tight, too hot, too uncomfortable.
But my agent Carl had forced me into it, and I was here against my will.
He’d insisted that I attend this Big Brothers Big Sisters of America charity event, as part of my effort to clean up my image.
I’d gotten into trouble again, and even my team owner was sick of my shit.
Carl had promised that this would impress the old man, so I’d agreed.
That didn’t mean I had to be happy about it.
I was used to people staring at me, but the whispers made me want to punch someone in the face.
I’d just gotten off a two-week suspension for a bar fight, and I knew that the eyes of the league were on me right now.
Fucking great time for me to be recognized.
The whole point of this event was to pair children who needed positive role models with men who would be there for them.
When Carl had first told me about it, I’d laughed in his face.
Me? A role model?
The same Caleb Johnson who’d been in and out of juvie for years?
The same Caleb Johnson who turned pro at eighteen and immediately started raising hell with his teammates?
Nope, didn’t see that happening any time soon.
But Carl had told me that he’d already arranged everything.
All I had to do was show up, put on a good face, and we’d be in and out in no time.
Sounded easy enough.
I moved through the crowd slowly, taking in the families who were all talking with one another as they waited for this thing to start.
My eyes settled on a woman who was sitting alone at a table near the stage.
She was beautiful, with long blonde hair that cascaded down her back in a wild tangle of curls.
Her sunglasses hid her eyes, but I could tell that she was watching me.
No doubt she recognized me, and I wasn’t surprised when she quickly looked away.
Like everyone else, she’d undoubtedly heard the rumors about me.
I was a player in more ways than one.
And I didn’t have time for a woman right now.
I had other shit to worry about.
I was just about to turn away when I saw a little boy slide into the chair beside her.
He was small, with bright blue eyes that sparkled in the overhead light.
She leaned down and said something to him, then helped him adjust his tie.
He was wearing a suit just like mine, but unlike me, he seemed proud of it.
He grinned at whatever she’d said, then jumped out of his seat and ran toward the stage.
