The tingling sensation in my hand was the first clue that I had done something to alter my reality.
But when I stumbled and caught myself, avoiding an embarrassing fall in front of Alex and his friends, I knew something else was up.
At first, I thought it was a fluke, but when it kept happening, I realized that I could rewind time and relive moments—over and over again.
I don’t know what compelled me to tell Alex about it, but I did, and he didn’t believe me at first.
Why would he?
The very idea of manipulating time was ludicrous, but after I showed him what I could do, he wasn’t so sure.
It quickly became a game to us—me, the girl who could stop time, and him, the boy who couldn’t.
One afternoon, we were studying in my room when I got bored.
Without saying anything, I held my hand out and stopped everything around us.
“Sophia,” he called out to me as if he were falling down a well.
I couldn’t see him or anything else for that matter, but I could hear him, and that was comforting.
After what felt like an eternity, I released my hold on time and turned back to give him a wide grin.
That’s as close to danger as we’ve ever gotten,” he said, his voice still trembling.
“Fun though.” He chuckled as if he hadn’t feared for his life.
“Come on, Alex.
There’s no real danger here.”
“But you could have gotten stuck and—”
“I didn’t,” I interrupted.
“I knew what would happen before it happened.”
He shook his head like he couldn’t believe his ears.
“That’s amazing.” He stared at me with wide eyes like he had never seen me before.
I may have done something unforgivable in that moment because the next thing he said will always make me regret telling him about my secret talent.
“You know, you could rewind time and get better grades on your tests,” he said with a sly grin on his face.
I shook my head at him.
“Now who’s being dangerous?”
I didn’t use it very often for just that reason.
He laughed and reached out to me.
“Come on,” he said.
“I’m just sayin’.”
I thought about it for a moment before shaking my head.
“No thanks.” I wasn’t about to cheat so that my grades would be better.
It may not have been fair, but it was what it was.
If I didn’t know the answers, then it was my own fault and cheating wouldn’t change that.
Alex shrugged his shoulders and sat back into his seat.
We went back to studying after that, but it was harder than ever to concentrate with him sitting right there next to me.
Even though we had been best friends forever, something felt different between us.
He looked at me like I was a puzzle that needed solving.
I shook my head at him and continued to study, but his silence was almost too much to bear.
“What?”
He held up his hand and gestured toward my own.
He was watching me with a smile on his face like he was waiting for me to do something.
