The conference room at Yelp’s San Francisco headquarters is the same as it ever was.
Sleek and modern, polished metal and glass, it’s designed to impress.
And the panoramic view of the city only adds to its appeal.
But more important than that, at least in my opinion, are the many decisions that have taken place within these four walls.
From strategy meetings to brainstorming sessions, this room has been the backdrop for countless moments of decision-making.
And today, I’m hoping it will serve as the catalyst for another one.
I glance around the table at the faces of my team.
They’re all here, as they should be, and thoughts of what we’re about to discuss fill me with a mix of excitement and nerves.
Yelp is a young, dynamic company that’s known for being ambitious and innovative.
I like to think that’s because of me, but in truth, it’s the people around me who make it all possible.
Sarah Lee, our Head of Engineering, is here, as is Mark Thompson, our Chief Data Scientist.
They’re both brilliant in their own ways and have contributed a great deal to our success.
I’m not sure where I’d be without them.
And then there are my other colleagues, all of whom are equally talented in their own right.
I take a moment to study their faces, each one filled with a certain level of eagerness and anticipation.
It’s a big day for us, and I can tell they’re all excited to get started.
The tech industry is fiercely competitive, which means we must always be on the lookout for ways to innovate and stay ahead.
It’s not easy, especially when you consider the big names like Google and Facebook that we’re up against.
But being the underdog has its advantages—after all, no one expects much from you, so there’s nowhere to go but up.
Plus, we’re young and dynamic, which gives us an edge in its own right.
But still… we need to do something big.
I take a deep breath and force myself to focus on what’s in front of me.
I’ve called this meeting for a reason, and I intend to make sure everyone knows exactly what’s at stake and what we need to do in order to succeed.
This is our chance to make something great happen—to do something that will revolutionize the way we operate and establish us as pioneers within an industry that’s always evolving.
I smile as I think about it and clear my throat before speaking.
“Thank you all for coming today,” I say as I glance around the table at each of my colleagues in turn.
