Chapter One
Isabella Cruz
I stared at the dirt road and sighed. I’d been walking for hours, hoping that there was some kind of life out there to find. I could faintly hear the sound of cars in the distance, which meant civilization was nearby.
The sun was starting to set, making it harder to see. I knew I couldn’t keep walking all night, and I needed a plan.
I wrapped my arms around my body and shivered. The nights were cold, and all I had were the clothes on my back.
I looked up at the sky. The sun was setting, and I knew I needed to find somewhere to sleep for the night.
I walked for another mile until I saw a small house in the distance. It wasn’t much, but it was home to someone.
I knocked on the door and waited. I heard the sound of footsteps, and then the door opened.
A middle-aged man with salt and pepper hair looked at me with surprise.
“Can I help you?” he asked. “It’s getting late, and you don’t look like you’re from around here.”
“Can I come in?” I asked.
He eyed me for a second and then opened the door wider. “Of course. What’s your name?”
“Isabella,” I said. “Thank you for letting me in.”
The man smiled. “You’re welcome, Isabella. My name is Robert.”
He shut the door behind me, and I felt an instant sense of relief as soon as I stepped into his warm house.
“You can stay here tonight,” he said. “But we’ll have to figure something out tomorrow.”
I nodded and curled up on the couch.
Robert went into the kitchen and came back with a blanket. He handed it to me, and I thanked him again.
I closed my eyes, but it took me hours to fall asleep. My mind was racing, and the events of the past few days kept replaying in my head.
When I finally woke up, Robert was already gone. The house was eerily quiet, and I wondered if he was still asleep.
I got off the couch and went into the kitchen. There was a note on the counter.
“Isabella,
I had to go into town this morning. There is some food in the fridge if you’re hungry. You can stay here for as long as you need to, but we need to figure something out soon. We can talk when I get back.
Robert”
I read the note again before putting it down on the counter. I pulled open the fridge and saw some eggs and bacon.
As soon as my stomach growled, I knew what I was going to do next.
I cooked myself some breakfast and then cleaned up before Robert got back.
I heard footsteps outside a little while later, and then the door opened.
“In here,” I called.
Robert walked into the kitchen with a smile on his face.
“I see you made yourself at home,” he said. “Did you sleep okay?”
I nodded. “Thank you for letting me stay here.”
“You’re welcome,” he said as he sat down at the table.
We talked for a while longer until Robert brought up the subject that we both knew was coming.
“I think it would be better if you went into town,” he said. “There are more resources there, and you’d be able to find a job.”
“I don’t have any money,” I said.
He shook his head. “You wouldn’t need any money to stay at a shelter, but you’d have to work for them.”
“I don’t have anywhere else to go,” I said without thinking.
I hadn’t even thought about what I was going to do next. All that had been on my mind was escaping the CIA base.
Robert smiled. “Well, I guess you can stay here until you figure something out.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I thought that he’d be happy to get rid of me, but I was wrong.
“Thank you,” I said. “I promise I won’t be any trouble.”
He stood up and walked over to me. He put his hand on my shoulder and gave it a comforting squeeze.
“No, you won’t be any trouble. I’m just glad we found you.”
I nodded and smiled.
“I’ll be right back,” he said. “I’m going to run to the store and get some more food.”
I nodded and watched him until he left.
As soon as the door shut, I went into his bedroom. I didn’t have much time to look around, but I found a small jewelry box with a ring inside. It wasn’t much, but I had to take it.
When Robert got back, he helped me find some clothes to change into. Then we went into town. He told me that I had to stay in the car while he went into the store, but he said that he’d be back as soon as he could.
As soon as he was gone, I saw my chance. I got out of the car and started running down the street as fast as I could until I saw a small diner.
I ran inside, and a girl who looked about my age came over to me.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
“I don’t know,” I said.
“Can you help me?”
“Yeah, sure,” she said as she looked around the diner.
She walked over to the door leading to the kitchen and opened it.
She looked back at me before opening it wider.
“You can hide in here for now,” she said.
“Thank you,” I said before slipping inside the kitchen.
“Hey, where’s that girl?”
I heard Robert ask from outside.
Who are you talking about?
One of the other waitresses asked.
“The one who just came in.”
“Oh her?”
The waitress said.
“She just went outside.”
“What?”
Robert asked in a panic.
“Where did she go?”
“I think she ran that way.” The waitress pointed toward the back of the diner.
I heard Robert run off toward the back exit before the waitress walked over to me.
“Can you come with me, please?”
she asked.
I followed her back into the dining area where Robert was waiting for me.
It was then that I saw the police badge on his belt along with his gun.
He was a cop; someone who was supposed to protect people like me from people like him.
“I’m sorry,” I said before trying to run away again, but Robert grabbed my arm and pulled me back toward him and the waitress.

I struggled to break free from Robert’s grip, but he was too strong.
He had his gun out and was pointing it at me.
“You have to come with me,” he said.
I knew that he was lying.
I’d heard stories about girls who got taken by cops in small towns like this, but I didn’t want to believe them.
I thought that someone like him would never do anything to hurt me, but I was wrong.
I should’ve known better after what happened with Mr.
Collins.
The waitress came over to me then and put something over my mouth.
I tried to scream out for help, but I couldn’t make a sound.
My eyes were getting heavy then, and I knew that I was going to pass out soon.
As soon as I did, Robert picked me up and carried me out of the diner.
The waitress locked up behind us before getting in his car with him.
When I woke up again, we were back in front of Robert’s house.
He carried me inside and took me down into his basement before tying me up to a support beam.
I’m so sorry,” Robert said as tears ran down his face.
“I promised myself that I’d never let him do this again, but you left me no choice.
You know too much now.
It’s over.”

You know too much now.

He left me alone after that, turning off the lights and leaving me in darkness.
I still wasn’t sure what he meant by “you know too much now”, but judging by the way he was acting, it couldn’t have been anything good.
I knew that whatever happened next, I had to get out of this place before it was too late; but how?
I knew that there was no way that I could overpower him on my own, even if I could get free from my restraints.
I struggled against them for a while longer before deciding to give up for now.
I needed to come up with a plan, but I couldn’t do that until I knew more about what I was dealing with here.
I turned my focus to the basement itself and the things that I knew could help me escape; a door to the right of where I was tied up and what sounded like a small window on the opposite side of the room from where I was lying.
I remembered the feeling of desperation as I tried to come up with a plan to escape from my captor's basement.
I found myself in a dark and unfamiliar place, tied up and fearing for my life.
Hoping to gather information from my captor, I pretended to be afraid and confused when he entered the room.
As I listened to his voice and felt his presence near me, I fought back the panic rising in my chest.
