Chapter OneI’m Sarah, I’m a journalist. I used to work for a paper, but I don’t any more. Now I just write the stories they won’t print.Like the one I’m working on now.The article that could change everything.I’ve just got back from a long interview with my contact. He’s in a high position. He’s in a very dangerous position. So, he wants to stay anonymous. He wants to keep his name out of it.I should have gone straight home. But I was so excited about what he’d told me, I couldn’t wait to get it all written down.I don’t know how long I was in there. Maybe an hour? Maybe two?It wasn’t until I closed the last browser window that I heard the knock on my door. This is a new building. It’s not like the old days. You can’t just walk in off the street any more. You need the code. Or you need to be buzzed up by someone inside. So, when I heard the knock, I assumed it was someone for me. Someone who had my number. Had the code. Someone who could get past security. And you know what? It was.It was him.
He looked the same as he always does. Tall. Blonde. Blue eyes. Strong-looking hands.I’d been expecting him. Hoping for him. I’d been half-wishing that he would turn up and half-hoping he wouldn’t.When I saw him standing in my doorway, I felt a rush of simultaneous excitement and panic. So, I wasn’t really surprised when he said, “Can I come in?”I hesitated. I couldn’t help it. It was such a bad idea. But then…“Of course,” I said, stepping back to let him through. He smiled as he brushed past me, and I felt a rush of warmth in my chest. He smells so good, I thought, and then I told myself to concentrate.“Sarah.” He turned to face me, and his beautiful blue eyes held mine. “You never called me back.”“I know,” I said, my voice a little breathless. “I’m sorry. I’ve been busy. It’s so hard to find the time.” I must have sounded unconvincing, because he narrowed his eyes at me.“That’s not true,” he said softly. “You haven’t called me because you’re scared.” His voice was low and dark, and it sent a shiver of desire through me. “You’re scared of what might happen if you get involved with me.”
