Chapter One
The Game is about to change.
My best friend is dead.
Or at least, that's what the Game wants me to believe.
"NOOOOO!" I scream, my voice echoing over the empty city.
I run to Alex, fling myself down next to him. He's lying on his side, blood pooling beneath him. His fingers twitch, and he gasps for breath. "You're going to be okay," I tell him. "I'll get you out of here. Just hold on."
I can't see the wound, but I know it's bad. His breathing is shallow, and his skin is pale and clammy.
I pry back his eyelids and check his pupils. One of them is blown wide, the other normal. That's never a good sign.
I look around for something I can use as a tourniquet, but there's nothing. He's clutching his side with one hand, but his fingers are too weak to do anything more than flutter over the fabric of his shirt.
