Chapter One
Jeff
I had a 9-5 office job. To most people that would probably sound boring, but I loved it. It was easy, and it gave me plenty of time to explore the realms. I combined my love of computers with my passion for adventure, and the result was pure bliss. I was living the best of both worlds.
About a year ago, I discovered I had the ability to create portals, and ever since then, I’d been using them to satisfy my curiosity about what lurked beyond our world. It had been a slow process. At first, I could only create portals to the break room, but over time, I’d learned to expand my reach.
Nowadays, I could create portals to any realm I wanted. The possibilities were endless. If I wanted to explore an underwater cavern, I would just open a portal to one. If I wanted to see the moon up close, I would just open a portal and step through. It was like having the entire universe at my fingertips.
Sometimes, it was the only thing that made my job bearable.
I was an IT guy at a high-ranking law firm downtown. If the partners knew I spent more time opening portals than I did fixing computers, they’d probably fire me on the spot. But what they didn’t know wouldn’t hurt them. Besides, the clients’ secrets were safe with me.
I worked in a small office on the fourteenth floor. It was a bit cramped, but it came with a nice view of the city. My desk sat next to a floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked the parking lot. It was one of my favorite things about working here. Sometimes, when I got bored with work, I’d open a portal to my living room and step through.
I’d spend a few minutes relaxing on the couch before returning to my desk. It was like taking a coffee break without ever leaving work. Or so I thought.
“Hey Jeff.” Sarah’s voice came from behind me. “You busy?”
I jumped out of my skin and spun around.
“Sorry,” she apologized with a sheepish grin. “I didn’t mean to startle you.”
“No worries.” My heart was still beating fast. “You just surprised me, that’s all.”
“I don’t need anything,” she said, her eyes twinkling with mischief. “I just wanted to see what you were doing.”
“Are you stalking me now?” I teased.
“No,” she scoffed, rolling her eyes. “Besides, you’d be a boring person to stalk.”
“Ouch,” I said with mock hurt.
She laughed and gave me a playful shove.
“You know what I mean,” she said, her cheeks turning pink.
“Don’t worry about it.” I shrugged her off. “I’m not offended.”
“Good,” she said with a smile. “Anyway, are you ready for lunch?”
“Almost.” I glanced at the clock on my computer screen. “We’ve got ten minutes.”
It was a lie.
We had less than five minutes before we had to get back to work. But who was counting?
“Ten minutes,” she repeated. “Got it.”
She gave me another playful shove, then headed back toward her desk on the other side of the office.
Sarah was one of those women who could make any man do anything she wanted. She was tall, curvy in all the right places, and had long blonde hair that she always wore in a ponytail. But it wasn’t just her looks that made her so irresistible; it was her personality too. She was sweet and smart and funny as hell.
And she knew it.
