I like beach volleyball because I can dive in the sand to get the ball, and because the crowd is usually really fun and it feels like they’re not even there.
It’s just me and my team, doing what we do best, which is pretty much kicking ass.
I’m Kara Danvers, and I’m a high school student.
I also happen to be Supergirl, but that’s a secret.
Most people think I’m a slightly below average girl, but they don’t know the half of it.
I was raised to hide who I am, but Alex has always known about my powers.
She helps me keep up the charade, and when I play volleyball, she’s always there, watching me play.
She’s my sister, and she’s absolutely not replaceable.
I like beach volleyball because I get to play hard and strong.
I can use my powers without anyone even noticing, which is awesome.
I mean, I could throw the ball from here to the moon if I wanted to, but that would be cheating.
And I don’t cheat.
But beach volleyball allows me to use all my strength and be competitive and sweat all I want without anyone looking at me weirdly.
I don’t know why people are so freaked out by sweat, but they are.
And it’s stupid.
Volleyball helps me let off some steam.
And I have a lot of steam to let off.
The sound of the waves calms me down when I get anxious, and the feeling of sand between my toes feels good after being cooped up in school all day long.
I practice with Alex on the sand behind our house, and she says that playing on real sand is different than playing on our fake grass lawn.
She says that playing on real grass is better for your joints because it’s softer than playing on a hard floor.
Playing on sand is even better for your joints because your feet sink into it.
She also says that playing on sand helps you get in great shape and build your endurance.
Sometimes she makes me carry her on my back or she throws heavy rocks at me while we’re practicing.
It’s just for fun, she says, and it makes me work harder and build up strength.
I like working out with her because she gets me, you know?
She’s a super athlete, too, so she understands the drive I have in me.
Alex played volleyball when she was in high school, but she was a setter, not an attacker.
When she saw how much I loved this sport and how good I was at it, she started coaching me and helping me become an even better player.
I’m in the best shape of my life right now, and I owe it all to her.
The sun is setting and I’m feeling good as I jump up and down before I serve the ball over the net.
My team is doing great today and we’re going to win this game for sure.
As soon as the ball leaves my hand, it speeds up and heads straight toward my opponents with such force that they can’t catch up to it, and we score another point!
Alex, my sister, smiles proudly at me from the bench as I play my heart out with my teammates and best friends, Lena Luthor and Eve Tessmacher.
We’re a pretty great team, if I do say so myself, but we made a mistake by underestimating our opponents when we played our last game, and we lost because of it.
These girls are good, and we need to be ready for anything they throw our way if we want to win this match, which would put us in first place.
We’ve worked hard to get where we are right now, and we’re not going to let anyone or anything take that away from us.
I jump up high to block an incoming spike and I see her arm going back as she prepares to hit the ball with all her might!
I raise my arm above my head and I’m ready to block this spike with all my might when the ball comes flying towards me faster than anything I’ve ever seen before!
It’s almost as if time has stopped, and everything around me has come to a screeching halt as I watch that ball coming straight for me!
My heart is racing and my lungs are burning as my muscles tense and prepare for impact.
My eyes are glued to that ball as my opponent’s arm swings back, ready to send it flying across the net, and I know that this is it.
This is what will decide if we win or lose this match!
My hands reach out and touch that ball with the tips of my fingers, and then something crazy happens.
The ball stops in mid-air, and then it starts to move back toward my opponents!
It’s going back to them, and it’s going back fast!
The ball flies over their heads and lands in their court, and before they can even react to what just happened, our team scores a point, and we’re only two points away from winning this game!
My teammates cheer for me as my opponents look at me with shocked eyes, and I just stand there, stunned beyond belief.
How did that happen?
I thought that my reflexes were top-notch because of all the training Alex put me through, but that was just insane!
The ball should have hurt when it hit my hand, but it didn’t at all.
It’s like my hands are made of steel or something.
And when I hit that ball all the way back to them, it was like the wind was at my back, helping the ball fly across the net with ease.
But that’s impossible.
That’s not something a normal person can do.
“Kara, are you coming?”
Lena asks me as she waves at me from the other side of the net, and I shake myself out of my daze before walking toward her.
She’s sitting on one of the benches with her tablet in hand, and she’s looking at our opponents’ game history to come up with a game plan that will help us win this thing.
Alex is by her side, looking at their warm-up routine, trying to figure out what we can do to play against them more effectively.
“Never mind,” Lena says as I sit next to her and put on my sunglasses before looking out into the horizon.
“You did great back there,” she says as she smiles at me and puts a hand on my shoulder.
“Thanks,” I tell her as I try to keep myself from shivering and giving myself away.
I’m still not sure if what happened back there was real or if it was just a dream, but if it was real…
I can’t let anybody know about it…
“Do you think we can pull this off?”
I ask her and Alex as they look at each other and smile before nodding at me.
“We’ll do whatever we can,” Alex tells me as she pats my back before standing up and walking away to talk to Kelly and Sam about their game plan for this next set.
I take off my sunglasses and keep blowing hot air into my fingers before putting them into a fist and standing up to stretch before getting back into position on our side of the court.
My heart is still racing a mile a minute as my opponent serves, and I dive for that ball, trying to save it before it hits our court and gives them a point…
My hand reaches out and touches that ball once again, and then something crazy happens…
The ball stops in mid-air, and it starts to move back toward our opponents…
I’m still not sure how this is happening, but oddly enough, it feels… good?
The beach is buzzing with excitement as the tournament goes on, and people are cheering and clapping for the teams that are playing right now, but it’s like everything else fades away when I do this…
My heart slows down and stops racing, and everything becomes quiet, but…
I can’t let this happen!
I need to stop using these powers or else somebody will find out about it!
I can’t let that happen!
And so…
I close my eyes and take a deep breath before shaking myself out of this trance and going back to the game with a clear head, and that’s when I see that ball flying through the air and toward our court…
And I’m just standing there, looking at it in shock because…
I should’ve saved that!
But how could I have saved that?
What the hell was that?
Lena asks me as she stands up from her seat and looks at me with a concerned look on her face, and so does Alex as they walk over to me and put their hands on my shoulders.
“What were you doing out there?”
Alex asks me with a stern look on her face, but Lena’s gaze softens when she sees me looking out into the horizon with wide eyes, and she gives me a reassuring smile that melts away all the anxiety building up inside of me right now…
And then she turns around and walks back to her seat to get back to work as Alex puts a hand on my shoulder and gives me a squeeze before stepping in front of me and looking out into the horizon with wide eyes as well.
“Did you see that?”
Nia asks me as she stands next to Lena and puts a hand on her shoulder before looking at me with a knowing look that sends shivers down my spine because…
She knows what’s going on with me, doesn’t she?
But how can she know?
