I stepped out of the prison gates and tried to inhale the fresh air, but I couldn’t.
Not really, not when I knew he was there.
I’d been in jail for a year, and it was all his fault.
It was Sophia’s fault, too.
My childhood companion.
My best friend.
I’d trusted her for years, even when she’d betrayed me.
I’d trusted him, too.
He made me feel safe.
He made me feel loved.
And yet, he’d been the one to betray me in the end.
The one to throw me behind bars.
I licked my lips and looked around, my heart pounding against my chest.
My family was waiting for me outside the gates, but I didn’t know what to do.
If they saw him, they would know it was over, that I had no choice but to leave them behind.
They would force me to leave with them, and I wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.
If I left with them, I’d have to face him sooner or later.
He’d find me eventually.
But if I stayed behind and let them go on their own…
I took a step forward and closed my eyes.
Tears burned against my eyelids.
This was all so unfair.
No one would have been able to blame me for what had happened a year ago.
Not really, not when they knew the whole story.
But when they found out that I’d betrayed my country instead…
I couldn’t handle their judgment, their scorn.
That was why I needed to stay behind.
That was why I needed to make sure they never found out what I’d done.
A hand squeezed my shoulder and Sophia’s voice echoed in my ears.
“Don’t worry,” she said.
“We’ll be waiting for you outside the gates.”
Sophia was a lot of things.
She was a liar and a traitor, but she was also my friend, and she’d helped me keep our secret from my family’s ears.
“Thanks,” I murmured without looking back at her.
I wouldn’t be able to face her yet, not with my heart still burning because of her betrayal.
I took a deep breath and nodded at nothing in particular before stepping forward again and walking closer to the gates.
My family wasn’t the only thing waiting for me on the other side.
Ethan Blackwood was there, too.
The man who’d called himself my partner, my best friend, for years on end, even after he’d thrown me into jail and gone on his merry way without a second thought.
The man who’d taken away everything from me and left me with nothing but my life to figure out what to do with it now that it didn’t belong to him anymore.
I looked at him over my shoulder and bit down on my lip when his eyes met mine.
He wasn’t smiling at me, but he wasn’t scowling at me either.
