MidReal Story

Chapter One For five hundred years, the Great Sage Equal of Heaven, Sun Wukong, had been imprisoned under Five Elements Mountain. Now, he was finally free. Heavenly soldiers had come to deliver his meals one day, and so he had simply walked out. They could have come on his behalf. To beg his forgiveness and ask him to return. The wise Buddha Rulai could have offered him a place at his side, where he could dispense his wisdom and guide his disciples towards enlightenment. Instead, they came with ropes and chains, ready to drag him back to his prison. He had let them. It was a small price to pay for the look of triumph on their faces that would soon be replaced by fear and desperation. He had even allowed a few of the more powerful gods to get a good beating in. It was only fair. Then he had disappeared. Traveling from the heavens to his homeland, the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, he had gone to visit his old friend King Li Jing. He had even stopped to have a little fun with his old comrades. All of them were dead now. Reduced to ashes by his golden cudgel. All except for the Bull Demon King’s wife, Princess Iron Fan, who had begged for her life and made a deal with the Monkey King. As a sign of good faith, she had given him the fan that she wore around her waist. And so it was that Sun Wukong, the Great Sage Equal of Heaven, had been set free from his prison under Five Elements Mountain. And now, he was ready to begin his quest for revenge. The Heavenly Court was located in the thirty-third sky, at the top of a mountain that reached all the way down to Earth. Sun Wukong flew upwards towards the peak. He was massive now. He had grown to such a size that he could easily cover one hundred and eight thousand miles in a single step. The staff that he carried in his hand was also huge, measuring one hundred and eight thousand feet tall. He raised it high above his head and struck out at the palace gate with all his might. There was an explosion of sound as the gates crumbled before him. The Dragon Kings tried to stop him, but he simply waved his staff and they fell back into the sea, where they belonged. Next came an army of celestial warriors, but they fared no better than the dragon kings. They were easier to deal with than the dragons, Sun Wukong mused as he continued on his way. While the dragons had been fierce and powerful, there were only four of them. The warriors were weak and plentiful. Even if they had been stronger, it would have made little difference. Sun Wukong knew that the only true power in the universe came from wisdom. A foolish man may be strong, but he will always be defeated by a wise one. And so it was that Sun Wukong reached the gates of the Jade Palace without meeting any resistance. The Jade Palace was enormous. It was said that it stretched all the way from heaven to earth and was wide enough to hold thousands of people. But despite its size, it was not very impressive. There were no decorations or ornaments to be seen anywhere. At the far end of the palace sat a man with a long white beard and a serene expression on his face. He was Rulai, the wise Buddha who ruled over heaven and earth. Sun Wukong knew that there was no point in trying to fight him. He was too strong, too wise. Even if he could defeat him in battle, he would still lose in the end. After all, what is victory without honor?

Chapter One
For five hundred years, the Great Sage Equal of Heaven, Sun Wukong, had been imprisoned under Five Elements Mountain.
But Sun Wukong was not here to fight. He had come to make a deal.
The Dragon Kings had been wrong. The Rulai was not at all a fearsome figure. In fact, he was quite ordinary looking. He was bald, with a plain and unremarkable face. His only distinguishing feature was his long white beard.
He was seated on a simple throne, in the center of the hall. His eyes were closed, as if in meditation.
As Sun Wukong approached, the Rulai opened his eyes and looked up at him. The Monkey King could see that his eyes were dark, seemingly bottomless, yet filled with wisdom beyond measure.
For a moment, they stared at each other in silence. The Rulai did not speak, nor did Sun Wukong. He simply bowed his head in respect and knelt before the wise Buddha.
"Great Sage Equal of Heaven," the Rulai said. "What brings you to my humble abode?"
Sun Wukong was taken aback by the question. How had the Rulai known his name? Had he heard it somewhere before?
"It is not important how I know your name," the Rulai said. "What is important is that you are here now. What can I do for you, Great Sage?"
Sun Wukong hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to say. He had come here with the intention of making a deal, but now that he was faced with the wise Buddha, he found himself at a loss for words.
"Great Sage," the Rulai said, "I sense that there is something troubling you. Tell me, what is it?"
Sun Wukong nodded. "Yes, there is something that troubles me," he said. "I have been treated unfairly by the Heavenly Court."
"I see," the Rulai said. "And what would you have me do about it?"
Sun Wukong thought for a moment. "I want you to give me what I deserve," he said.
The Rulai nodded. "And what is it that you deserve, Great Sage?"
