Chapter One
Five Years Ago
Sarah crouched behind the car, trying to catch her breath. The sirens wailed in the background, growing louder with each passing second. She had to get out of there before the police arrived. They couldn’t find her here. She’d be arrested and locked up for the next ten years.
But she couldn’t leave.
Not yet.
Not without Dani.
The memory of the petite blonde with a mischievous smile and a heart of gold flashed through her mind, bringing with it a surge of guilt and desperation.
She touched the locket that hung around her neck, a memento from their childhood. They had been best friends since they were little, inseparable through thick and thin. But now, Dani’s life was in danger, and Sarah was the only one who could save her.
She peered around the car, scanning the area for any sign of movement. The alley was quiet, the only sound the distant rumble of thunder. The air was heavy with anticipation, a storm waiting to break. It was a fitting backdrop for the chaos that had unfolded just moments before.
Sarah’s mind raced as she tried to piece together what had happened. A meeting had gone wrong, shots were fired, and now she was hiding in an alley, her heart pounding with fear and determination. She knew she had to act quickly, before it was too late.
Dani had risked everything to help her undercover operation, and now she was paying the price. Sarah had promised to protect her, but time was running out. She had to find Dani before it was too late.
As she debated her next move, the rain began to fall in heavy drops, soaking her to the skin. But she barely noticed. She was focused on one thing: finding Dani and getting out of there before it was too late.
