One Night in Tokyo My daughter’s face stared back at me from the photo on my desk. Her eyes were big and brown like her mother’s used to be. She looked so much like her that it hurt sometimes. “Dinner’s ready,” my sister called from downstairs. I turned away from the photo of my late wife and grabbed the pages of my latest report. I’d finished it just that afternoon, and I had no intention of looking at it again. If I did, I’d find something that needed to be fixed or rewritten. It was late already, and I wanted to dive into the shower and go straight to bed. “I’m not hungry.” “You need to eat.” My sister’s voice was gentle, coaxing me down the stairs. I knew she meant well, but I had no appetite. When I’d first moved in with her after Emi’s death, I’d had trouble sleeping. I’d lost weight and was a little underweight as it was. After a few weeks, I started running again, forcing myself to eat at regular intervals. But some days were harder than others. My sister was waiting for me at the dining table when I walked into the kitchen. Her long brown hair was tied up in a messy bun on top of her head and she had on a loose-fitting T-shirt and leggings. I sat down across from her and unfolded the paper napkin she’d left for me. There was steamed rice in the bowl and a piece of grilled fish on a plate. It was simple Japanese fare, but it was my favorite thing to eat. “You look tired,” she said as she served me dinner. “It’s been a long week.” She nodded as she served herself. “Are you taking on too much work?” “The company needs me.” My sister sighed as she took a bite of her food. “They don’t want you working yourself to death.” “I know.” I hadn’t taken any time off in over a year. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d done anything just for fun. Work took up all of my time and energy, but I didn’t mind. It kept me from thinking about what had happened. The rest of our meal was eaten in silence. When we finished, my sister stood up and gathered our dishes.

But I did.
One Night in Tokyo
My daughter’s face stared back at me from the photo on my desk.
“I’m not hungry.”
“You need to eat.” My sister’s voice was gentle, coaxing me down the stairs.
“It’s been a long week.”
She nodded as she served herself. “Are you taking on too much work?”
“The company needs me.”
My sister sighed as she took a bite of her food. “They don’t want you working yourself to death.”
“I know.” I hadn’t taken any time off in over a year. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d done anything just for fun. Work took up all of my time and energy, but I didn’t mind. It kept me from thinking about what had happened.
The rest of our meal was eaten in silence. When we finished, my sister stood up and gathered our dishes.
“Thank you for dinner,” I said, following her into the kitchen. “I’ll do the dishes.”
“It’s okay. I was going to clean up anyway.” She washed and rinsed the dishes while I wiped them dry.
“I can do the rest,” I said.
“Don’t be silly. You’re working too hard. You need to take it easy on your days off.”
I knew she was right, but I didn’t know what to do with myself if I wasn’t working. I felt like I was always on the move, like if I stopped for a second, everything would come crashing down around me. But my sister insisted that I take it easy, so I did. I went into the living room and sat down on the couch.
I closed my eyes and listened to the sound of the water as it flowed down the drain. My sister came in a few minutes later and sat down next to me.
“Do you want to watch a movie?” she asked.
I nodded. “Sure.”
She got up and went over to the DVD player. A few seconds later, the menu screen for a romantic comedy came on. My sister made herself comfortable and I sank into the couch, trying to keep my mind from wandering. It had been a year and a half since Emi had passed away, but it still felt like it had only been yesterday.
I watched the movie but I didn’t really pay attention to it. When it was over, my sister got up and turned off the TV.
“It’s getting late,” she said.
“I’m going to bed.”
“Okay.” She kissed me on the cheek before heading upstairs. “Goodnight.”
