Chapter 1
I was on my way to school when I saw the construction site.
I’d never been this close before, and I was curious.
I had a few minutes before the bell rang, so I decided to take a quick look.
I climbed over the fence and walked around.
There were big machines everywhere, and men in hard hats working.
It was like being in a movie!
I wanted to stay and watch all day, but I knew I’d get in trouble if I was late for school again.
So I turned to leave.
That’s when I saw her.
It was Monday morning and I was on my way to school.
Mondays were the worst because it meant five whole days of boring classes ahead.
But as I walked along, dragging my feet and dreading the day ahead, something caught my eye.
There was a construction site right next to the school that I’d never paid much attention to before.
I’d always been curious about what went on at those places behind all those big fences and ‘keep out’ signs.
The urge to find out was too strong to ignore, so I decided to take a quick look through the fence.
I knew I wasn’t supposed to be there, but curiosity got the better of me as usual.
As soon as I climbed over the fence, I felt like an explorer in a whole new world—like being in a huge sandbox with enormous toys that moved and made noise!
This was way better than sitting in a classroom all day listening to teachers talk about stuff that didn't matter.
From my new vantage point on top of the fence, I could see lots of things going on inside the construction site that weren’t visible from the street—giant machines moving dirt around, men in hard hats walking around or riding on other machines, and big piles of stuff everywhere.
It was like some kind of organized chaos, and it was totally fascinating.
But what were they doing?
Concrete was being poured into huge holes in the ground while metal bars were placed inside them before it dried… were they building a swimming pool?
A foundation for a building?
A fancy bomb shelter?
Who knew!
And who cared?
All I knew was that this looked like one giant playground filled with dirt and toys and noise—and someone wasn't going to be happy if they found me here instead of in school.
Just as I decided it was time for me to go, someone called out from behind me.
"Hey! What are you doing here?"
I turned around slowly to see Elita The Engineer staring down at me from her perch on top of a pile of dirt near the middle of the construction site.

The "no trespassing" signs were pretty clear, and I didn't exactly have a good excuse.
I’d never been any good at making up stories or lying anyway.
Elita just looked at me for a second, like she was trying to decide if I really belonged there or not.
She still hadn't said anything yet.
Her dark eyes seemed to bore right through me as she stood there with her hands on her hips and waited for an answer.
I started to fidget uncomfortably under her gaze.
"I… I'm sorry," I said finally.

"It's just… I've never been this close to a construction site before and I thought it would be interesting to see what you were building."
Elita didn't say anything at first.
She just kept staring down at me.
Her dark eyes flicked up and down as if she was trying to figure me out or something, and she still had her hands on her hips like some kind of superhero—or villain!
I couldn't tell which one though.

"Well, you're not going to learn anything by standing out there," she said finally.
"Come on in."
She disappeared from sight as she turned around and I heard the sound of boots hitting the dirt as she made her way down the other side of the pile.
I could hear her voice calling out from inside the construction site a few seconds later, telling me to get down from the fence and come over.
And then she was there, standing in front of me with her hands on her hips.
I had to crane my neck to look up at her, even though I was still a few feet off the ground.
I opened my mouth to say something, but no words came out.
Instead, I just stared up at her like an idiot.
"What are you doing here?"
"I…"
She was looking at me like I was crazy or something, and it made me feel so self-conscious that I wanted to sink into the ground right then and there.
But what could I say?
I'd been caught red-handed playing hooky from school!
"I'm sorry," I said at last.
"I wasn't trying to get in the way. It's just that—well, like I said before, I've always wondered how things like this get built."
Elita nodded slowly, still looking down at me with an unreadable expression on her face.
"Well, now you know," she said after a moment's silence.
"Is there anything else you want to see? Because if not, you really should be getting to school."
I shook my head quickly.
"No ma'am. That's all. Thank you for showing me."
She smiled slightly at that, and for some reason it made my heart skip a beat in my chest.
"You shouldn't be here," she said gently.

"If you want to know how to build something like this, you should be in school, studying hard and getting good grades. You're smart—you have a lot of potential. Don't waste it."
I blinked up at her, feeling my face grow hot with shame.
"I'm sorry," I said again, as I began backing away from the fence.
"I didn't mean to cause any trouble, I just—"
"You didn't cause any trouble," she said firmly.
"But you should still go to school."
I nodded, too flustered to say anything else, and then I took off running down the street as fast as I could.
As I made my way to school a few minutes later, I couldn't help but replay that whole scene over and over again in my head.
It was so embarrassing!
I had never played hooky before; what had gotten into me?
And yet… even though I was ashamed of myself for cutting class that day, part of me couldn't stop smiling at the thought of what had just happened.
I mean, how many kids got to see real-life engineering work up close like that?
That had been amazing!
Elita's presence up on that pile of dirt had felt almost superhero-like, with her hard hat and protective gear—and that voice!
She definitely knew how to command a room, or a construction site in this case.
And what she'd said to me had made sense too; if I wanted to learn how to build things as big as that foundation, then I would need a good education.
There was no way around it, really.
