"Hey, Lily."
I look up from my book to see Mark Johnson standing in the doorway of the library.
"Hey," I say, closing the book and setting it on the table in front of me.
Mark is one of the staff members here at the adoption center, and he’s also a friend of Emma’s.
He has short black hair and glasses that make him look like a nerd, but he’s actually pretty cool.
He’s always joking around with us kids and making us laugh.
"Emma’s here to see you," he says with a smile.
I groan and roll my eyes.
Chapter 1
"Come on," he says, holding out his hand to help me up.
I take it and let him pull me to my feet.
He leads me through the library and down the hall to the lobby, where I see Emma for the first time.
She has long blonde hair and is wearing a pair of black glasses that make her look like a sexy librarian.
She’s wearing a black skirt and a white blouse that makes her boobs look huge.
I’ve never had a tutor who dressed like her before.
She looks like she should be in a porno, not teaching me how to read.
"Hi, Lily," she says, smiling at me.
I ignore her and cross my arms over my chest.
"Hi, Emma," Mark says with a smile.
"I think you broke her. She hasn’t said anything since she saw you."
Emma laughs and looks at me.
"Are you okay, Lily? Can you talk?"
I roll my eyes.
"No, I’m a fucking mute," I say sarcastically.

Mark laughs.
"I told you she was a smartass. You’re going to have your hands full with this one."
I ignore him and pick up my book from the table in the corner of the room.
It’s The Catcher in the Rye, which is one of my favorite books.
I’m already on chapter twenty-one, but I’ve read it so many times that I can’t even remember how many times I’ve read it.
"Are you reading that for school?" Emma asks as she walks over to me.

I don’t say anything.
I just keep reading and ignore her.
She sighs in frustration and throws her hands up in the air.
"Well, if you need any help with your homework, I’m here. Just let Mark know, okay?"
She looks at Mark and smiles at him before turning back to me.
"I’ll leave you alone for now. Just let Mark know when you’re ready to talk."
She turns on her heel and walks out of the room.
Mark watches her go before looking back at me with a grin on his face.
"Dude, she’s hot as hell. What is wrong with you?"
I roll my eyes and put my book back on the table.
"She’s not that hot."
He laughs and shakes his head at me.

Chapter 2
I sit down on the bench and watch as Emma stands up and walks over to the front desk, where Mark is sitting.
"Is she always this quiet?" he asks in a low voice.
Emma shrugs.
"I don’t know. We haven’t talked much, but she didn’t seem to have any problem with talking earlier."
I can hear them talking, even though they’re not speaking very loudly.
"So, what do you think of her?"
Mark asks.
"She’s going to be trouble, isn’t she?"
Emma laughs.
"I don’t know. She seems nice enough, but she doesn’t seem very interested in being tutored."
"Give her time," he says, leaning back in his chair.
She’ll come around.
"Yeah, right," I say sarcastically.
Mark looks at me and smiles.
"Hey, Lily, what do you think of Emma?"
he asks.
I look at him and roll my eyes.
"What do you want me to say? That she’s gorgeous and has nice tits? Because she is and she does."
I shake my head and let out a sigh.
"I don’t know what you want me to say about her. She seems nice enough, but I’m not interested in being tutored. I’m just here to read. That’s all I want to do. I don’t need someone else telling me what to do or how to live my life."
Mark laughs and turns to look at Emma.

Emma shrugs her shoulders.
"It’s okay. I understand."
She looks at me and smiles.
"But I do think we need to talk about your future plans. What do you want to do when you finish your GED?"
I shrug my shoulders.
"I don’t know. I haven’t really thought about it."
"Well, we’ve got plenty of time to figure it out," she says.
She smiles at him.
"So, when do you want her back?"
Mark laughs.
"She can stay with you for now. I’ll let you know when I need her back."
Emma smiles and nods.
"Great. Let’s go, Lily."
She stands up and starts walking toward the door.
I follow her out of the lobby and down the hall to her office.
She opens the door and walks inside.
I follow her in and take a seat on the couch across from her desk.
She sits down behind her desk and looks at me.
"You can sit on the couch if you want."
I look at the couch and then back at her.
"No, I’m good."
Tutoring Troubles: A Tale of Unexpected Bonds
She smiles at me.
"Okay, then."
She stands up and walks over to the bookshelf in the corner of the room.
She grabs a book and walks back over to her desk.
She sits down and starts reading.
I watch as she reads the book, turning the pages with one hand while she holds it with the other.
She reads for a few minutes before she looks up at me.
"What are you reading?"
I shrug my shoulders.
She smiles at me.
"Okay, then."
She goes back to reading, but I can tell that she’s getting frustrated with me.
She wants to help me, but I’m not giving her much to work with.
It’s not her fault that I’m like this, but I can’t help it.
I’ve been burned too many times before by people who said they wanted to help me, only to leave me when things got too hard for them.
I don’t know what she wants from me, but I can tell that she’s not going to let this go easily.
She seems like a nice enough person, but I’m not sure that we’re going to get along very well.
She doesn’t seem like the kind of person who will give up easily, which is good because I’m not going to either.
She’ll get bored with me eventually and move on to someone else.
At least, that’s what I’m hoping will happen.
