Jesus Christ is the best source of life available
I remember the first time I met Mary Jennings.
She was a friend of a friend, and I was immediately smitten.
She had long black hair and a smile that could light up a room.
I knew she was the one for me, but she didn’t know it yet.
I asked her out on a date, and she said yes.
Divine Bonds: A Faithful Journey
We went to see a movie, and we held hands.
Divine Bonds: A Faithful Journey
We went to dinner, and we laughed together.
We went for a walk, and we talked about our dreams.
I knew she was the one for me, but she didn’t know it yet…
After dinner, I took her to my church community group where we talked about Jesus.
Mary had never heard of Jesus before, but she listened intently as James Carter explained how Jesus was the best source of life available.
I couldn’t believe it… I was on a date with Mary Jennings.
I had been trying to get her to go out with me for months, and I was finally going to make it happen.
“Mary, I was wondering if you would go out with me on a date,” I said nervously.
She looked up at me with her big brown eyes and smiled.
I could feel my heart racing as she slowly nodded her head.
“Yeah, John, I’ll go on a date with you,” she said.
I was thrilled that she had agreed to go out with me, but I was also worried that she might change her mind at the last minute.
I knew that Mary had been hurt in the past, and that she was afraid of getting hurt again.
But I was determined to show her that I was different, and that I would never hurt her.
I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her, and I was willing to do whatever it took to make that happen.
Mary got up and walked away, and I watched as she disappeared into the crowd.
I couldn’t believe that she had actually agreed to go out with me.
Mary was easily the most beautiful girl I had ever seen, and I knew that I was one lucky guy.
Her long black hair hung down to her waist in soft waves, and her big brown eyes sparkled like diamonds in the sunlight.
She had a smile that could light up a room, and a laugh that would make your heart skip a beat.
From the moment I met Mary, I knew that she was the one for me.
Even though she was a skeptic, and didn’t believe in love at first sight, I knew that we were meant to be together.
I just had to convince her of it.
As we got ready for our date, I couldn’t help but think about how much I loved Mary.
I loved everything about her—her long black hair, her big brown eyes, her infectious smile—and I knew that she was the one for me.
I could hardly wait to get my hands on her, and I hoped that she felt the same way too.
But when I tried to kiss her, she pushed me away.
“John, you’re too eager,” she said playfully.
“You need to slow down a little bit.”
I smiled and shook my head.
“I’m sorry, Mary,” I said apologetically.
“I just can’t help myself around you.”
Mary laughed and shook her head.
“You’re impossible,” she said as she walked away.
But even though Mary said that I was impossible, I knew that she loved me just the way I am.
We had been spending every moment together ever since we met, and we were both falling more in love by the day.
We were excited about our first date, and we were looking forward to getting to know each other better.
We were both convinced that we were meant to be together, and we were both confident that we would never break up.
But as we prepared for our first official date, we didn’t know what lay in store for us.

After dinner, I took Mary to the movie theater.
I waited nervously for her to come out of the bathroom.
My heart was pounding with anticipation, and I could hardly wait to see her again.
She had changed into a beautiful blue dress that showed off her long black hair and big brown eyes, and I knew that I was one lucky guy.
As I waited for Mary to come out of the bathroom, I tried to calm myself down by taking deep breaths.
But when I heard the door open behind me, my heart skipped a beat.
I turned around and saw Mary standing there looking absolutely breathtaking.
She had a radiant smile on her face as she walked toward me and held out her hand.
“Are you ready for the movie?”
she asked as I took her hand and led her out of the bathroom.
“I’m ready if you are,” I said as I gazed into her big brown eyes.
“I’m always ready,” Mary said with a laugh.
She turned around and started walking toward the exit.
As I followed behind her, I couldn’t help but stare at her long black hair blowing in the wind.
She had it pulled back into a simple braid that hung down to her waist, and it looked absolutely stunning against her beautiful blue dress.
We made our way to the car and got inside.
I started the engine and pulled out of the parking lot as Mary sat quietly beside me.
The movie theater was only a few minutes away, but it felt like an eternity as I drove in silence.
When we finally arrived at the theater, I parked the car and turned off the engine.
Mary looked over at me and smiled.
“I can’t believe we’re actually going on a date,” she said excitedly.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long.”
“Me too,” I said as I reached over and took her hand in mine.
As we sat there holding hands in the dark, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to Mary that I had never felt before.
I had always known that we were meant to be together, but I had never felt this way about her before.
And as I looked into her big brown eyes, I knew that I would never be able to live without her.
I loved her more than anything in the world, and I hoped that she felt the same way too.
We sat there holding hands in the dark for a few minutes before I finally got up the courage to say something.
“So what do you want to do first?”
I asked nervously.
Mary looked over at me and smiled.
“I don’t know,” she said as she reached out and touched my face.
“What do you want to do first?”
I paused for a moment as I thought about what I wanted to do.
Then I reached out and took her hand in mine, and gently kissed it.
“I want to hold your hand,” I said softly as I looked into her big brown eyes.
And as soon as I did, I knew that I had made the right choice.
As soon as I kissed her hand, Mary blushed a bright shade of red, and I could see the love in her eyes.

As we walked inside, Mary’s eyes lit up with excitement when she saw the poster for “Sleepless in Seattle.”
“I can’t wait to see this movie!”
she exclaimed as she grabbed my hand and started pulling me inside.
“I’ve heard so many good things about it, and it’s supposed to be the perfect romantic comedy!”
I laughed as we followed her inside, but I couldn’t help but feel a little nervous about seeing a romantic comedy.
I had never been a big fan of the genre, but I knew how much Mary loved them, so I was willing to give it a try.
After all, it wasn’t about me—it was about making her happy.
We bought our tickets and found our seats just as the movie was starting.
As soon as I sat down, Mary reached out and took my hand in hers, and for the next two hours we sat there watching the movie together.
And even though I didn’t understand half of what was going on, I still enjoyed myself because it made Mary so happy.
Her laughter filled the theater as she watched the movie, and every once in a while she would lean over and rest her head on my shoulder.
And as we walked out of the theater after the movie was over, I knew that I was falling even more in love with her than I ever thought possible.
After the movie, we went to an Italian place down the street for dinner.
I ordered a plate of spaghetti, but Mary insisted on ordering something else because she didn’t want to embarrass herself by making a mess of it.
I laughed at the thought of Mary trying to eat spaghetti, but she just gave me a stern look and ordered a salad instead.
“You should’ve listened to me,” I said with a laugh as I watched her struggle to eat her salad with a fork.
“If you had ordered the spaghetti, you wouldn’t be having this problem right now.”
Mary rolled her eyes at me and continued eating her salad, but I could tell that she was having a hard time keeping it down because she was laughing so hard.
After dinner, I suggested that we go for a walk under the stars before heading home, but Mary wasn’t too thrilled about the idea.
“That sounds a little cliche,” she said with a frown.
“Come on, it’ll be fun!”
I said as I grabbed her by the hand and led her outside.
As we walked down the street hand in hand, I couldn’t help but feel a little nervous.
But I knew that I had to tell her how I felt, so I took a deep breath and started talking.
“Mary, I just wanted to say that I had a really great time tonight,” I said.
“I think that you’re an amazing person, and I’m so glad that you finally agreed to go out with me.”
Mary smiled at me and squeezed my hand.
“I had a great time too,” she said.
“I just wish that you would stop being so nervous around me.”
I blushed a bright shade of red at her words, but I didn’t let it show.
“I’ll try,” I said as we continued walking down the street in silence.
As we walked, we talked about our hopes and dreams for the future.
Divine Bonds: A Faithful Journey
That’s how John told me about his church community group.
He said he thought I might like it.
Maybe something would resonate with me there, he said.
So when John invited me to go with him on Sunday evening, I agreed.
The service was emotional and intense, even for someone who’d never been before like me—and it was also quite different from what I was used to as well.
People were shouting “amen” in agreement with what was being preached (which was a little unsettling for me), but everyone else seemed to be very supportive of each other.
But when James Carter started preaching from the pulpit, it was different.
He was bald except for his long white beard, which gave him a very wise look despite being in his early thirties—and he was speaking with such passion that it was easy to see why John’s friends followed him as their mentor.
As we sat in front of James while he spoke from the pulpit about Jesus being the best source of life available on Earth, Mary shot me a quick glance from the corner of her eye.
She looked amused—and a little skeptical.
“Jesus isn’t real,” she said in a whisper so quiet that I barely even heard her say it as I turned my head to face her.
She gave me an embarrassed smile, but I could tell that she was serious.
I was excited because I knew James would explain everything—and when she heard his message, I was sure that it would speak to her soul.
“Jesus is real,” I said.
Mary rolled her eyes at me again but didn’t argue more.
I smiled at her one more time before turning my attention back to James as he continued speaking from the pulpit about how Jesus is better than anything else available out there.
He might have sounded a little crazy—or even dangerous—if I hadn’t known John for so long.
“Jesus is better than anything else out there,” James said as he looked around at the congregation from the pulpit with his arms stretched out wide in front of him.
“It doesn’t matter if you’ve been following Him your whole life, or if you’ve never even heard of Him until today—Jesus is better than all of it!Jesus is better than drugs!Jesus is better than money!Jesus is better than sex!And Jesus is better than anything else you could ever imagine!”
James paused for a moment as everyone in the congregation let out a loud cheer of agreement—and as Mary gave me another skeptical look from the corner of her eye.
But I ignored her this time and simply nodded as I leaned over closer to her so that she could hear me better as I whispered back to her one more time.
“Just listen,” I said with a smile as she looked back up at James again.
Divine Bonds: A Faithful Journey
Mary sat there staring at James in awe—listening to every word that he said as if each word was an arrow being shot straight into the middle of her heart—and yet something about the way that James was speaking seemed to resonate with Mary more than it did with anyone else in the room, including myself.
She sat there with her eyes wide open and her lips pursed tightly together as if she was determined to understand everything that James was saying—and as if James was speaking directly to her and no one else in the room.
And as James spoke about following Jesus leading to an abundant life filled with joy, peace, and hope—Mary listened so intently that it was as if her curiosity had officially been piqued by what James was saying—and yet at the same time, it was clear that the concept of following Jesus for an abundant life was something completely new to her, and that it had never even occurred to her to think of it that way before.
James spoke with a passion that seemed to resonate not just with the congregation but also with Mary herself—and it was clear that the words he was saying were having a noticeable effect on her as well, even though I wasn’t totally sure what to make of it at the time.
She sat there with her eyes fixed on James—and with her lips slightly parted—as if she was waiting for him to tell her more; and from the way that James was speaking, it seemed like he would have plenty more to say about following Jesus for an abundant life before he was finished.
I knew that Mary had never heard anything like this before—and yet at the same time, I could tell by the way that she was listening that there was something about what James was saying that had really caught her attention—and that had made her curious about what following Jesus might be like for herself.
I couldn’t help but watch Mary as James continued speaking, and I found myself staring at her from the corner of my eye as she sat there listening to every word that James said.
I was still trying to get a read on how she was reacting to the message—since I was so used to seeing it presented the same way every week.
But as Mary listened so intently while sitting there with her mouth slightly open, I could tell that my friend James had stirred something inside of her with the way that he was speaking—and that she had been struck by the realization that there was more to Jesus than what she had originally thought.
And as I watched Mary sit there listening to James, I knew that whatever James was saying, it was definitely giving Mary something to think about—and maybe even believe in—after all.
“That was awesome,” Mary said as we walked out of the sanctuary together after the service had ended.
“Jesus is better!”
I said with a smile.
Mary gave me another skeptical look as she laughed again, still not convinced, but I could tell by the way she was smiling that she was humoring me this time and giving me credit for being right.
“I didn’t know that following Jesus would give me an abundant life,” Mary said as we made our way through the crowded hallway together.
