I was falling.
The wind rushed past my ears, and I could see the ground coming up to meet me.
I was going to die.
I was going to die, and I didn’t even know why.
I didn’t know what I had done wrong, but I was going to die for it.
I tried to scream, but no sound came out of my mouth.
I tried to move my arms, but they were pinned to my sides by the wind.
I tried to close my eyes, but they wouldn’t obey me.
The ground was coming up so fast, and I was going to die.
I was going to die, and there was nothing that I could do about it.
And then everything went black.
When I woke up, I was lying on a bed of grass with the sun shining down on me from a cloudless sky.
For a moment, I thought that the fall had been a dream, that none of it had ever happened.
The fall had been very, very real.
It was the waking up part that was the dream.
But then, where was I?
I sat up and looked around, but all I could see was a dense forest stretching out in all directions around me.
I must have fallen into a clearing, though I couldn’t see it from where I was now.
I was about to stand up and try to look for it when I heard a noise coming from the trees.
I turned to look, but there was nothing there.
I stood up and took a few steps in the direction of the noise, but it only got louder and closer without revealing anything to me.
It was almost like it was following me, but when I stopped to listen, it would stop as well.
I shook my head and continued towards the sound.
I was probably just getting spooked by the fact that I was alone in the woods.
I was about to take another step when something burst out of the trees and tackled me to the ground.
I cried out in pain as we tumbled together through the grass, but then I saw who—or rather what—my attacker was.
It was my brother, Lucas.
He was lying on top of me with a huge grin on his face, like he had just done something incredibly clever.
“Ethan!”
he exclaimed, pulling me into a tight hug.
“I can’t believe it’s you!”
He let go of me and looked down at my face.
“Why are you crying?”
“I’m not,” I replied, wiping away the tears that were streaming down my face.
He blinked at me for a moment, like he didn’t believe me, and then he looked over his shoulder at the trees.
“Nate!”
he called out.
“Get out here!”
There was a moment of silence, and then another figure stepped out of the trees.
It was my other brother, Nathan.
“What’s going on?”
he asked, frowning at us in confusion.
“Ethan’s here!”
Lucas replied, grabbing my arm and dragging me to my feet.
Nathan blinked and then his eyes widened in shock as they landed on me.
“What are you doing here?”
he asked, crossing the small clearing between us in a few strides and pulling me into a tight hug.
“I don’t know,” I replied, hugging him back even though I didn’t know why he was so upset.
“I fell.”
Nathan let go of me and took a step back so that he could look me in the eye.
“You fell?”
“What do you mean you fell?”
“I don’t know,” I replied again, shaking my head.
“It’s all blurry.”
Lucas frowned at me in concern.
“Are you okay?”
“I think so,” I said, looking down at myself to check for injuries.
“I feel fine.”
“That doesn’t make any sense,” Nathan muttered under his breath as he ran a hand through his hair, looking very confused about something.

I took a step towards him, but he held up his hand to stop me before I even got close enough to touch him.
“I don’t understand,” he said, shaking his head like he was trying to clear it of cobwebs.
“This is impossible.”
“What’s impossible?”
I asked, frowning at him in confusion.
“Where have you been?”
Lucas asked, stepping between us to hide the look of panic on Nathan’s face from me.
“We thought that you were dead!”
Nathan stared at him for a moment, and then he shook his head again and closed his eyes like he was trying to get his thoughts back in order rather than explain himself to his older brother.
“It’s a long story,” he finally said, opening his eyes again to look down at me with an intense expression on his face.
“But we’re just glad that you’re okay.”
I stared at him for a moment, and then I started to cry again.
I didn’t know why, but the look on his face made me feel like everything was going to be okay, no matter what.
He smiled at me, like he knew exactly how I felt, and then Lucas grabbed my arm again and started pulling me across the clearing towards the trees.
“You’re going to love this place,” he told me with a huge grin.
“It’s a real fairy tale world.”
I smiled at him through my tears.
I had always loved fairy tales.
My brothers always did their best to help me feel like I was a part of the action, even if I was too young to really understand what was happening most of the time.
I trusted them completely.
I knew that they would never lead me into danger on purpose.
I also knew that they would do anything to protect me if danger found us when we weren’t looking for it.
That was just what brothers did.
And they were mine.
There was no way that we could ever be separated.
Lucas laughed and threw his arm around my shoulders as we entered the trees together.
“That’s the spirit!”
he exclaimed with a grin.
“That’s what I like to see!”
The forest was dark, but the sun still managed to shine through the leaves enough that we could see where we were going without any trouble at all.
We followed the path deeper into the woods until we came to a stream.
Lucas stopped when he saw it and started to take off his boots.
“Come on!”
he exclaimed, grabbing my hand before I could take them off myself.
“I’ll help you across.”
I nodded at him as he led the way across the stream.
The water was cold on my bare feet, but Lucas held my hand tight enough that I didn’t slip.
When we made it to the other side, he helped me put my boots back on before we continued on our journey.
It wasn’t long before I heard running water again.
I looked up to ask Lucas if we were going back the way we had come when something cold and wet hit me in the face.
I screamed in surprise as I stumbled backwards.
“What’s wrong?”
Lucas asked frantically as he caught me before I could fall.
“It’s just rain.”
He wiped my face with his hand and then looked up at the sky in confusion.
I looked up as well and gasped.
"Reborn Powers: A Game of Destiny"
I thought that my heart would burst from my chest.
My brothers were both alive!
This was everything that I had ever wanted, but somehow I couldn’t find the words to tell them how happy I was.
It seemed like my throat had closed up and I couldn’t get anything out no matter how hard I tried.
They both looked at me in confusion, and I realized that they must think that I was still upset about something.
I could only imagine how worried they must have been about me, but I had finally found them, and everything would be all right from now on.
Finally, I managed to choke out a few words, but they weren’t the ones that I had wanted to say.
“How are you alive?”
I asked them in a small voice.
“Are you really real?”
Lucas’ eyes went wide at my question.
“What are you talking about?”
he asked me with a frown.
“Of course we’re real.
Why would you think otherwise?”
I had no idea how to put my feelings into words, but I knew that I had to try.
“I thought that you were both dead,” I said in a small voice.
“Both of you.
But now… but now…”
Tears started to fall down my face again, and I couldn’t stop them this time.
Lucas’ expression softened the moment that he saw me crying again.
He dropped down on one knee so that he was eye level with me and wrapped me in a big hug.
“Hey, it’s okay,” he said softly as he rubbed my back.
“I don’t know why you thought that we were dead, but we’re here now, and we’re not going anywhere.”
After a few moments of silence, I finally managed to get my tears under control and look him in the eye again.
“I thought that you had drowned,” I told him softly.
“I thought that you had fallen into the stream and that it had carried you away and we would never find you ever again…”
“I’m sorry,” Lucas said softly as he looked down at me with a sad expression on his face.
“I would never leave you behind like that on purpose.I promise that we’ll be more careful from now on.”
His words only made me cry more.
They must think that I was so weak, so stupid!
But they were wrong; they were so very wrong!
If anything happened to them, I didn’t know what I would do!
“I’m not a baby,” I said with a frown as I pushed him away from me.
“I’m not a baby, and they’re not going to take my brothers away from me again!”
Lucas stared at me in shock for a moment, and then he smiled.
“You’re right,” he said as he got back to his feet.
“You’re not a baby.
We shouldn’t have left you alone like that.
We were just trying to protect you, but we won’t do it again.
We’ll stick together from now on.”
“Yeah,” Nathan agreed.
“Besides, we still have a job to do.
We need to get the artifact before the other players do, and we can’t do that if we’re just standing around here all day.”
“Yeah,” Lucas agreed with a nod of his head.
“We should get going before they catch up with us.”
“How are we going to get across the stream?”
I asked Lucas as he started walking again.
He looked down at me and grinned.
“Don’t worry about it,” he said with a wink.
“I’ve got an idea.”
It wasn’t long before we came back to the stream where we had been a few minutes ago.
Lucas took my hand and led me over to the water’s edge, where an enormous tree was growing.
