Aakrith and Vatsal gets the scolding of their life from Kabir because the Aakrith and Vatsal both of them decided to sneak out at night. When they come back home, Kabir was standing there, waiting for them
“Vatsal, wake up!”
I whisper to my best friend.
“Wake up, Vatsal!”
I shake him a little.
“What is it?”
he asks, rubbing his eyes.
“It’s time,” I say, grinning.
He looks at me and then at the clock hanging on the wall.
“It’s two in the morning, Aakrith,” he says, his eyes wide open now.
“I know,” I say, still grinning.
“Get up,” I say, pulling him out of bed.
“What are you doing?”
he asks, trying to push me away.
“Get ready,” I say, ignoring his question.
“We’re going out.”
He looks at me as if I’ve lost my mind.
And maybe I have because who in their right mind would sneak out of the house in the middle of the night?
But then again, when have we ever been in our right minds?
I ask him to get dressed and meet me outside our room in five minutes before leaving for the terrace.
“Aakrith, we’ll get caught,” Vatsal says as he follows me to the terrace after a few minutes.
“Kabir will kill us.”
“No, he won’t,” I say, grinning.
“He’s not our father, Vatsal.
He’s not going to ground us for breaking rules.”
“But he has raised us like his own.
And you know how strict he is.”
I know very well.
And I also know that we have only a few hours to spare before Kabir wakes up for his morning run.
“All I’m saying is that we need to be back before it’s too late,” Vatsal says as he follows me down the ladder.
“You worry too much,” I say, grinning.
“I have everything planned out.”
Vatsal rolls his eyes and follows me as I run toward the gate.
It’s a little past two in the morning, and the whole world is asleep; the only sound is of our footsteps hitting the pavement.
“How long do you think we have?”
Vatsal asks as he runs beside me.
“Not long,” I say, looking back to see if Kabir has heard us and is following in his car.
“You don’t even know where we’re going, do you?”
Vatsal asks, rolling his eyes.
“I do,” I lie.
He shakes his head at me, but I ignore him and keep running.
I was right about not having much time because when we return from our little adventure, it will be time for Kabir’s morning run.
And there is no way in hell he’s going to let us out of his sight after that.
So it was now or never.
Vatsal looks at me when he sees our destination, but he doesn’t say anything because he knows that it won’t help if we argue now.
We’ll just end up wasting more time, and that’s not something that we can afford.
“Come on,” I say as I make my way inside the building.
The watchman looks at us and smiles as we pass him.
I look around to make sure no one is watching us before making my way inside and climbing the stairs to get to the second floor.
Vatsal follows silently behind me as I walk through the corridor and stop in front of the door with the number 202 written on it.
I take a deep breath before knocking on the door.
The door opens after a few seconds, revealing a woman in her fifties; she looks at me but doesn’t say anything for a few seconds.
She then looks behind me and smiles when she sees Vatsal.
“Come in,” she says, opening the door wider for us to enter.
We both take off our shoes before entering the house and making our way inside.
“Good morning, Aunty,” I say as I take a seat on the sofa in the living room.
“Good morning,” she says with a smile as she closes the door behind her and makes her way to the kitchen.
“How are you two?”
she asks as Vatsal sits beside me on the sofa.

The door to the terrace opens, and I lead my best friend inside, our sneakers squeaking against the marble floor.
Vatsal looks around as I close the door behind us, and I smile at him excitedly as I walk toward one of the corners of the terrace and open the door that leads to the staircase and close it behind us once we’re inside.
“I can’t believe you talked me into doing this, Aakrith.” He shakes his head at me and follows me as I make my way down the stairs.
“Are you sure Kabir won’t find out?”
he asks as he climbs down the stairs behind me.
“I’m sure.” I grin at him and lead him to our hideout, which is in the basement of a building not far from where we live, and take out the key from my pocket to unlock the door before entering the password to open the door and lead him inside.
“How do you know all of this?”
Vatsal asks as he looks around in awe.
“Because I’m awesome,” I say, grinning at him before taking a seat on one of the chairs and waiting for him to register everything that’s happening right now.”
he asks, sitting beside me on the chair.
“Please tell me you have a plan.”

“I mean surely Kabir wouldn’t wake up until 5:00 am right?
“And what if he catches us?”
Vatsal asks, sounding concerned.
“He won’t,” I reply, waving my hand in front of his face, “and even if he does, it’ll be after 5:00 am which gives us enough time to come back home.”
“How do you know he wouldn’t wake up before that?”
He’s right, there’s no way for me to know that, but Kabir usually wakes up at 5:00 am every day for his morning run.
“He couldn’t possibly wake up before 5:00 am,” I tell Vatsal with a shrug, hoping what I said is true because even though we’ve done something like this in the past, it usually happened during the day when Kabir was at work.
“Now tell me what’s going on so I can decide whether or not to join you.”
“The city,” I say looking at Vatsal who looks beyond confused right now, “I want to go to the city and explore it tonight.”
I ask, bouncing my leg up and down with anticipation.
“And how do you plan to do that?”
he asks, furrowing his eyebrows as he stares at me.
“I have ordered a cab, it’ll be here any minute,” I reveal, looking up at the starry sky as I think about the adventure I’m about to embark on.
I can’t believe I’m actually doing this.
I’m sneaking out of the house to go to the city and explore it at night!
“This is insane,” Vatsal says, shaking his head, “are you out of your mind?”
“Come on, Vatsal, when was the last time we did something crazy?”
I ask, looking at my best friend who’s thinking hard about this right now.
“I don’t know,” he says after a few seconds, “but this doesn’t sound like a good idea, Aakrith.”
“Please don’t say no,” I say, looking at him with puppy eyes.
“You know I can never say no to you,” he says, sounding defeated.
It’s not like he would say no either way.
Even if he thinks this is a bad idea, Vatsal would never refuse me anything.
He trusts me way too much to ever do that and I would never put my best friend in real danger.
“Yes!”
I shout in excitement and my best friend shakes his head with a smile on his face.
“This is going to be so much fun,” I say as I get up and open the gate of the terrace so we could go down the stairs and leave the house without Kabir finding out.
“You better hope it doesn’t turn out to be the opposite of that,” Vatsal says as he follows me down the stairs with a sigh.
“Hello,” I say to the cab driver who has just arrived in front of my house and Vatsal and I are standing in front of the gate.

The gate closes behind us as we run towards the city and Vatsal looks at me with a big smile on his face.
“I can’t believe it worked!”
he shouts in excitement and I nod in agreement before I shush him because Kabir might wake up if he hears us shouting this way.
“He’s not going to wake up,” Vatsal says, shaking his head.
“I made sure he was asleep before we left the terrace.”
I didn’t even think about that and honestly, I don’t know how he did it because Kabir has a habit of constantly checking on us at night when we’re home if he’s there with us which he is today.
He’s been working from home most of the time since the pandemic started because he’s always worried about us and doesn’t want to leave us alone at home which is why we have to be quiet so he doesn’t find out that we’re gone or he won’t let us leave the next time we try to do something like this.
“Our room was so quiet,” Vatsal tells me as if reading my mind, “so I knew he was asleep.”
I knew our room would be the perfect place for us to stay so close to the terrace because it made everything easier, but I didn’t realize it would help us like this too because I don’t hear the sound of snoring most of the time when I’m asleep until I actually focus on it, but Vatsal does and I can tell that we’re getting closer to the city when I hear people talking and laughing while walking down the street at this time of the night.
It’s a warm night with a cool breeze and the moon is shining beautifully up in the sky with the stars that are making me feel like I’m in a movie or something, but I know that’s not true and I look at Vatsal who has a big smile on his face as he looks around him with excitement.
“I can’t believe we’re actually doing this,” he says, stopping to look at me as I stand next to him with a smile on my face too.
“Me neither,” I reply, “but I’m glad you agreed to come with me.”
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” he says, sounding serious as if what he’s saying is the truth.
“I wouldn’t have let you miss it,” I tell him with a smile before I start walking again.
“Where exactly are you planning to go?”
he asks as he follows me, but then stops when I turn around to look at him with a big smile on my face.
You know better than anyone that I like surprises,” he says before he starts walking again after realizing that I’m going to find out what my surprise is one way or another.
I lead him to where the cab left us behind so we could walk towards wherever my feet take us, but Vatsal stops me after a few minutes of walking down the street as he looks around him with confusion written all over his face.
“I thought you said you knew where you were going,” he says as he looks at me with an annoyed expression on his face, “are you lost?”

As I try to remember the way, Vatsal looks at me with a smile on his face and shaking his head.
“Please tell me you’re joking,” he says, looking like he’s about to lose it as we both stand there in silence for a couple of minutes.
We’re going back because you don’t know where you’re going?”
he asks, looking really annoyed now, but then smiles as if he’s realizing something, “you just wanted an excuse to get out of the house and see the city at night, didn’t you?”
“Do you even have to ask?”
“Do you think the streets will be empty?”
he asks as we walk back towards the house, but then stops after I nod my head before turning to walk back home.
“I can’t believe Kabir is going to kill us,” he says as he stands next to me on the terrace after I open our bedroom window.
“He’s not going to kill us,” I tell him as we both climb inside, “I just wanted us to have a little fun.”“A lot of fun,” Vatsal corrects me as he looks around the room while our eyes adjust to the darkness, “and knowing you, it’s not going to be that little.”I laugh as I walk towards our closet to get the stuff that we hid once Kabir told us that we weren’t allowed to go out like this anymore after what happened with Vatsal a few weeks ago.
“But it’s not like we haven’t done this before,” I say with a smile on my face as Vatsal follows me towards the closet.
“You’re right, but Kabir has been stricter lately,” Vatsal says with a frown on his face as he watches me take out my backpack from the closet.
“He has been, but we both know that when you really want something, there’s no one who can stop you from getting it,” I tell him as I put the backpack on the bed before putting on my sneakers.
As Vatsal puts on his sneakers too, I take out my phone from my pocket and turn on the flashlight so we could see where we’re going before turning off the lights and opening our bedroom door slowly.
Once we’re outside in the hallway, we close the door behind us before walking to the living room, but Vatsal stops me before we could go down the stairs, “what about Kabir?”
he asks as he looks at me with a worried expression on his face, “what if we get caught by him?”
