I was in the middle of a meeting when I got the call.
I didn’t recognize the number, but I answered it anyway.
It was a mistake.
The voice on the other end was a man’s, and he asked if I was Miles Wright.
I told him he had the wrong number, but he didn’t hang up.
He said he was calling to inform me that my wife had been in an accident.
My heart stopped, and I felt my body go numb as I listened to him tell me that she hadn’t made it.
I don’t remember much after that, only that I left the meeting without saying a word and went straight to my office to pack up my things.
I didn’t bother telling anyone where I was going or why because they wouldn’t have understood anyway.
My life had been turned upside down in a matter of seconds, and all I could think about was getting to her as fast as possible.
The drive from New York to Chicago felt like an eternity, and there were moments when I thought I wouldn’t make it.
I remember sitting in the car, staring out at nothing, and feeling as if I was in a daze.
I kept thinking that this couldn’t be happening, that it was all a big mistake and that as soon as I got to her, everything would be okay.
But deep down, I knew that wasn’t true.
The call had been real, and so was the accident.
I’d lost the love of my life, the woman who meant everything to me.
The woman I’d pictured growing old with, having children with, and spending the rest of my days with.
I don’t know how long it took to get there, but when I finally did, I was relieved to see that someone had already parked my car for me.
My mind was in such a fog that I didn’t even remember doing it.
I paid the valet and tipped him before heading inside the hospital.
I didn’t know where to go or what to do, so I just stood there in the lobby for a moment and tried to clear my head.
But then my phone rang again, and I jumped like I’d been shot.
I fished it out of my pocket and answered without looking at the caller ID.
“Hello?” My voice sounded hoarse and thick.
There was a pause on the other end before the man spoke again.
I’m sorry for calling you like this, but we need you to come to the ER as soon as possible.
It sounded more like a statement than a question.
“I’ll be there in two minutes,” I said before I ended the call and shoved my phone back in my pocket.
My legs were shaking so badly that I could barely walk, but somehow I made it to the elevators and rode them up to the sixth floor where the ER was located.
When I stepped off, someone was waiting for me at the front desk.
Are you Miles Wright?”
he asked when he saw me.
He had dark hair and brown eyes that were filled with sadness.
“Yes,” I replied.
“I’m Doctor Johnson,” he said before holding out his hand.
I took it, but I didn’t shake it.
“Is she…?”
Doctor Johnson let out a heavy sigh.
“She’s still alive, but just barely.
The next few hours are critical.”
I stood there staring at him, unable to speak or move.
“Please, we need you to come back with us.
Time is of the essence.”
His words snapped me out of my stupor, and I followed him down a long hallway to where my wife was being treated.
I don’t know how long I stood there watching them work on her, but eventually, someone came over to me and pulled me away from her.
I tried to fight them, but they were too strong.
They led me to a small room where I sat down on a chair, put my head in my hands, and cried.
It felt as if I cried for hours, but it probably wasn’t more than a few minutes.
Eventually, Doctor Johnson came in and sat down across from me.
“Is she going to be okay?”
He hesitated for a moment before he spoke.
“I’m sorry, Mr.Wright, but I don’t know.

But she made it through surgery, right?”
Doctor Johnson nodded.
“She did make it through surgery.
She’s in recovery now.”
“Thank God,” I whispered as a wave of relief washed over me.
“She’s not out of the woods yet, though.
She’s sustained some severe injuries and will need time to recover.”
“How long until I can see her?”
“As soon as she’s out of recovery and in a room.
We’ll get you set up right away.”
Doctor Johnson stayed with me for a few more minutes before he excused himself to check on Sarah.
It felt like hours before he came back, but eventually, he did.
She made it through recovery without any complications.”
The man let out a breath.
“That’s good to hear.”
Doctor Johnson pulled his glasses off and wiped his eyes.
“She’s going to be okay, Mr.
Wright… but it’s going to take some time.”
“How much time?”
“As much as it takes.”
“I don’t understand,” I replied.
Doctor Johnson gave me a sad smile.
“Your wife has sustained some severe injuries, including a broken leg, a broken arm, and a concussion, among other things.
She’ll need time to heal, and it will be painful, but she will get through it.
We’ll also want her to have a full psych evaluation once she’s feeling better.”
“She’ll get the best care possible,” Doctor Johnson said.
“I promise you that.”
I nodded and thanked him before he left.
I don’t know how much time passed after that, but at some point, someone came and got me and took me to Sarah’s room.
It was a small private room with a bed and a few machines next to it and not much else.
Sarah was lying on the bed with an IV in her arm and a tube down her throat.
It was hard to look at her like that because she looked so fragile and pale.
But when she saw me standing there, she smiled.
It was a weak smile, but it was a smile nonetheless.
I walked over to her and took her hand.
She squeezed it gently, and I could see the pain and relief in her eyes as she looked up at me.
“Hey,” I said, trying to smile back at her even though I felt like I was going to crumble into a million pieces any second.
Sarah opened her mouth to say something, but the tube down her throat made it impossible.
“It’s okay,” I said.
“You don’t need to talk.
Just rest.”
She nodded and closed her eyes for a moment before she spoke again.
“Glad you’re here.” The words were barely more than a whisper, but I heard them loud and clear.
“Me too,” I replied before I leaned down and kissed her on the forehead.
“I’ll be right here with you.”
The doctor came back a little while later and told me I could stay for a little while longer before he kicked me out so Sarah could rest.
He also gave me some paperwork to fill out and told me where to take it when I was done.
When I left Sarah’s room to go do that, I ran into Jane in the hallway.
She had been crying, and her face was red and puffy.

I tried to walk past her without stopping, but she grabbed my arm and stopped me.
“I’m so sorry, Miles,” she said.
I looked at her for a long moment, trying to figure out what to say to her.
I knew that if we were going to make things work between us, we couldn’t both be based in New York, but I was hesitant to tell her that when we had just started seeing each other again.
I was hoping we could take things one step at a time and go from there, but I had a feeling that things were about to get a whole lot more complicated than that.
“Thank you for being here,” I said finally.
She nodded and let go of my arm, but she didn’t say anything else.
The look on her face was one of a mixture of sadness, concern, and something else, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on what it was.
I didn’t have time to figure it out right then and there, so I just nodded and quickly walked away from her before she had a chance to say anything else.
When Sarah first told me she wanted to stay in Chicago, even though I had decided to move to New York for my new job, part of me was relieved.
I knew that being separated from her would be hard on both of us, but I also knew that if we both stayed in Chicago, it would be too easy for me to fall back into old habits and get back into trouble again.
I wanted to prove to her—and to myself—that I could be the kind of husband she deserved.
The kind of man who was honest with her and who put her first instead of his own selfish needs and desires.
The kind of man who loved her more than anything else in the world.
But despite my best intentions, our relationship started to feel strained as soon as we moved apart from each other.
We tried to make it work at first, but communication was hard, especially when our schedules were so different, and eventually we started to drift apart without even realizing it.
Thinking back on it now, I can see all the little signs that something wasn’t right, but at the time, I was too consumed with work and everything else going on in my life to see them.
I had no idea that her accident would hit me as hard as it did or that I would feel so guilty about everything that happened between us that I would want to crawl into a hole and die.
But the truth was that as soon as I got that call telling me what had happened to her, I knew I had to go back to Chicago to be with her, no matter what it took.
And not just because I felt responsible for what happened to her either.
When Jane showed up at my office later that afternoon, I wasn’t sure what to expect from her or even what I wanted to happen between us anymore.
