I was going to be a star.
I could feel it in my bones, in the way my heart raced whenever I thought about stepping out onto a stage and singing my heart out.
I’d been dreaming of this moment for as long as I could remember, and now it was finally here.
The line for auditions stretched around the block, and I couldn’t help but feel a little nervous as I waited my turn.
There were so many talented people here, all of them hoping to be the next big thing.
What made me think that I had what it took to stand out from the crowd?
I took a deep breath and tried to calm my racing heart.
This was my shot, and I wasn’t going to let it pass me by without giving it everything I had.
I’d been practicing for weeks, running through my song until I knew every note by heart.
All I had to do now was get up on that stage and sing like my life depended on it.
I smiled at the audience, forcing myself to ignore the way my hands were shaking.
In the front row, my best friend Max gave me a thumbs-up, and I felt a surge of confidence.
He’d been there for me every step of the way, from the day I’d decided to audition for this talent show to this very moment.
I was so grateful to have him in my life, and I knew I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for his love and support.
“Hi,” I said into the microphone when the judges nodded their heads for me to begin.
“My name is Jamie Collins, and I’m going to be singing ‘I’m a Mess’ by Bebe Rexha.”
The song was one of my favorites, and it felt like it had been written just for me.
The lyrics spoke to the mess that was my life in a way that nothing else ever had, and I couldn’t wait to share them with the world.
As the music started, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
I’m sorry if I seem uninterested
When I opened my eyes again, the judges were staring at me with blank expressions on their faces.
I’d expected them to be tapping their feet or nodding their heads along with the music, but they all looked so bored it was hard not to feel discouraged.
Surely they weren’t judging me based on just a few lines of the song.
They didn’t know anything about me or how much I wanted this, how hard I’d worked to get here or how much it meant to me to be standing on this stage.
But as I looked out into the audience and saw all the blank faces staring back at me, I knew that wasn’t true.
It was going to take more than just a pretty voice to impress these people, and I was determined to give them everything I had.
As the music swelled, I closed my eyes and let myself get lost in the sound.
I loved to sing more than anything in the world, and every note that left my lips was proof of that.

Bebe Rexha arrives
I jumped as the sound of my phone vibrating broke through the silence.
The song was already over?
My heart raced as I opened my eyes and looked around the room, trying to figure out what had happened.
The judges were all staring at me with wide eyes, their mouths hanging open in shock.
The audience was eerily silent, but as I scanned the room, I saw a few people standing up and clapping their hands, and then everyone else followed their lead.
A wave of relief washed over me as I realized that they were cheering, not booing.
I’d done it.
I’d made it through my first audition, and I’d lived to tell the tale.
Tears pricked my eyes as I thanked the judges and made my way off the stage, struggling to keep myself from breaking into sobs as I tried to process what had just happened.
As soon as I stepped into the wings, Max grabbed me in a tight hug, his arms wrapped around me so tightly I could barely breathe.
“That was amazing,” he whispered in my ear.
“You were amazing.”
Tears spilled down my cheeks as I collapsed against his chest, grateful beyond words to have him at my side in that moment.
Without him, I never would have been brave enough to get up on that stage, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to survive this journey without him by my side.
He pulled away, wiping the tears from my cheeks with his thumbs as he smiled down at me.
“Told you you could do it,” he said, his blue eyes shining with pride.
I laughed, swatting away his hands even though I was grateful for his support.
“Yeah, yeah,” I said, rolling my eyes even as I wrapped an arm around his waist to pull him back into another hug.
I didn’t want to let him go, not after that terrifying experience, but he gently pushed me away so we could watch the rest of the auditions from the wings.
We weren’t allowed to cheer or clap for the other contestants, but we stood there in silence, holding hands as we waited for the judges to announce who would be moving on to the next round.
When they finally got to my name, I held my breath, praying that they’d liked my audition enough to send me through to the next round.
After what felt like hours of suspense, they finally announced that I’d made it through, and I let out a breath I hadn’t even realized I was holding.
Max squeezed my hand, his face breaking out into a huge grin that made my heart race with excitement, but as I looked out into the audience, I realized that he wasn’t the only one who was happy I’d made it.
The audience was on their feet, giving me a standing ovation that brought fresh tears to my eyes even though most of them were still staring at me with blank expressions on their faces.
Unlike the judges, they were all clapping for me, not just because they were told to or because they thought they should, but because they really wanted to.
Their smiles were genuine, and even from my spot in the wings, I could see how proud of me they were, how happy they were that I’d gotten to live my dream even if just for a few minutes.
I’d done it.

I didn’t recognize her at first because she wasn’t one of the judges who had been sitting at the table up in front, but she smiled at me as soon as she stopped in front of me to take my hand in hers.
“You were absolutely incredible up there,” she said, her smile widening as she squeezed my hand.
“Your voice is absolutely amazing.”
I felt my cheeks warm with embarrassment, but I couldn’t help but smile back at her as she continued to gush about how much she’d enjoyed my performance.
After all of the harsh words from the judges, it was nice to hear someone saying something nice about my voice, especially someone who had such a beautiful voice herself.
“Thank you so much,” I said, my voice small and shy as I stared up at her in awe.
“I’m so glad you liked it.”
“Oh, I loved it,” she said, and then she laughed as she shook her head, like she couldn’t believe that this was happening.
“You’re going to go far in this business, trust me.”
I felt my heart stop in my chest at her words, and then I felt my face break out into an even bigger grin than before.
“Thank you,” I said, my voice stronger this time as I nodded in agreement.
She squeezed my hand again before she turned to walk away, and I stared after her in awe, still amazed that she’d taken the time to stop and talk to me just to tell me how much she’d enjoyed my performance.
I held my hand up to my mouth to hide my smile as I turned back to Max, my heart still pounding with excitement as he threw an arm over my shoulders to give me a quick hug of his own.
“You were amazing out there,” he said, his eyes sparkling with excitement as they searched my face for any sign of doubt or worry.
“Why are you so surprised?I told you that you could do it.”
I shook my head as I leaned into his side, still smiling even though my face was starting to hurt from how much I’d been doing so.
“It’s just… it’s different when someone who actually knows what they’re talking about says it, you know?”
He rolled his eyes, but he was smiling too as he hugged me close.
“I know what I’m talking about too.”
I laughed, swatting him away even as I wrapped an arm around his waist to give him another hug.
“Yeah, yeah,” I said, rolling my eyes even though he was right.
He did know what he was talking about, and if he said that I could do it, then there was no reason for me not to believe him.
“I’m so proud of you,” he said, squeezing me tight for a moment before he finally let go of me so that we could walk back down the hallway together, his arm around my shoulders as we headed back toward the dressing room where my friends were waiting for me.
“Thanks,” I said, my voice small and shy as my cheeks started to warm with embarrassment at how much they must have been able to hear of our conversation.
“I couldn’t have done it without you.”
He laughed, shaking his head as he ruffled my hair while we waited for the elevator to come and take us back down to the lobby so that I could say goodbye to everyone and head home for the night.
