I feel like I’ve been in a coma for the past twenty years.
And I’m just now waking up.
I’m not sure what to do next.
I don’t know where to go from here.
I look around the room, but it’s dark and I can’t see anything.
I try to move, but I can’t.
It’s like my body is frozen in place.
I can’t even feel my arms or legs.
I try to scream, but nothing comes out of my mouth.
It’s like I’ve forgotten how to talk.
Or maybe I never knew how in the first place.
I don’t know how long I’ve been here.
It could be days, weeks, months, or even years for all I know.
All I know is that it feels like an eternity since I last saw the light of day.
Since I last felt the sun on my face or the wind in my hair.
Since I last heard a bird sing or a child laugh or a dog bark.
All I know for sure is that my life will never be the same.
And it’s all my fault.
It was a beautiful day when we left the base.
The sky was clear and the sun was shining.
It was warm, but there was a breeze blowing, which made it feel cooler.
It was a perfect day for a drive.
Or it would have been, if we hadn’t been in the middle of a war zone.
We were traveling in a military convoy in the Kunar Province, Afghanistan.
I was sitting in the back seat of an armored Humvee, along with Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes, my best friend, who also goes by the nickname Rhodey, and an army medic named Simon Hargraves.
We were on our way to inspect one of our company’s newest weapons, the Jericho missile, which was being tested by the military on the outskirts of the city.
I had my eyes closed and was listening to music on my earbuds, trying to relax and enjoy the ride.
Rhodey was sitting next to me, working on his laptop, taking care of some last minute business before we got to the test site.
I didn’t see or hear anything until it was too late.
All of a sudden, there was an explosion right next to me.
The Humvee lurched violently to the side and rolled over onto its roof.
I fell out of my seat and hit my head on the floor.
Everything went dark for a minute.
When I came to, I realized that I was covered in blood.
I had been cut by broken glass from the windows.
I looked around and saw that I was surrounded by smoke and flames.
The Humvee was on fire and there were dead bodies lying all around me.
I knew that I had to get out of there before I died too.
I managed to crawl out from under the vehicle and pull myself to my feet.
I started running as fast as I could in the opposite direction from where the explosion had come from.
I didn’t stop until my lungs were burning and my legs were about to give out underneath me.
I looked around and saw that I was in the middle of nowhere.
There were no other vehicles in sight, just a long line of burning wreckage behind me.
I was just about to start walking when I heard the sound of a missile being launched from a few feet away from me.
Before I could react, it exploded right in front of me, sending a spray of shrapnel in every direction.
A piece of metal pierced through the armor on my chest plate and embedded itself in my heart.
The force of the blast knocked me off my feet and sent me flying through the air.
I landed hard on the ground, on my back, and lay there, stunned by the impact.
When I reached up to touch my chest, I felt something warm and wet soaking through my fingers.
When I looked down, I saw that I was covered in blood.
My first thought was that I was going to die.
My second thought was that it was my own company’s weapon that had almost killed me.
And then everything went black again.
When I woke up again, I was in a cave in the middle of the desert and I had no idea how I got there or where I was or what was going on.
My head was pounding and I felt like I was going to be sick.
When I tried to move, I realized that I was tied up and that I couldn’t feel my arms or legs.
There were wires and tubes sticking out of my body and I could hear the sound of machines beeping and clicking all around me.
I looked around and saw that I was in some kind of makeshift operating room and that there were several people wearing masks and gloves standing over me with guns in their hands.
For a second, I thought that they were trying to kill me, but then I saw that they were actually trying to save my life.
My chest plate had been cut open and they were trying to remove the piece of shrapnel from my heart.
They were working as fast as they could, but I could tell from the grim looks on their faces that it wasn’t going to be easy.
The next thing I remember is passing out again and falling into a deep sleep that seemed to last forever.
When I woke up for the third time, it was dark and I was alone.
The first thing that I noticed was that the pain in my chest had subsided and that I could move my arms and legs again, even though they felt weak and sore from not being used for so long.
The next thing that I noticed was that there was someone else in the room with me, sitting on the floor next to my bed and staring down at the ground with his hands in his lap.
He looked up when he heard me moving and I saw that it was an older man with dark hair and a full beard who was wearing a white lab coat over his clothes.
He smiled at me when he saw that I was awake and said something in a language that I didn’t understand.
When he realized that I couldn’t understand him, he switched to English and introduced himself as Dr.Yinsen, a physicist who had been taken prisoner by the same people who had captured me and brought here against his will just like I had been.
He explained that he had been forced to help me build a missile for our captors, but instead of building what they asked for, he helped me build something else instead, using whatever materials we could find in the cave, which wasn’t much, since we were in the middle of nowhere and there weren’t any cities or towns nearby for us to scavenge from.
I didn’t ask him what he built, because I already knew what it was—I recognized the design and all of the custom parts that he had built by hand; I knew exactly what it was that we had built together and I knew what I needed to do now that I had it: I needed to put it on and leave this place once and for all, before I lost my mind from being cooped up in this damn cave any longer than I already have been.
The first time that I saw Yinsen again after he had cut into my chest and removed the shrapnel that would have killed me if he hadn’t done so, I asked him what this thing that we had built together was used for and he told me that it could be used as both a weapon and as armor, depending on how I wanted to use it, and that it would help me escape and fight back against our captors if I ever chose to do so.
I asked him how it worked and he told me that I would be able to control it using my thoughts, which I thought was pretty damn cool, but also seemed like it would be a little bit weird since I had never used anything quite like this before.
I asked him if he had ever built anything like this before and he told me no, that he hadn’t, which made me feel both scared and excited at the same time—I knew that we were both taking one hell of a risk by building something like this together, but I also knew that we didn’t have any other choice if we both wanted to get out of here alive and in one piece, no matter how much Raza threatened us or beat us or tried to scare us into submission.
