A boy is going to recover a ancient time mac
It starts to change.
The year is 2118.
And I need to see it with my own eyes.
Time travel is possible, and I’m going to recover an ancient time machine that has been hidden for over a century.
Mia is trailing close behind me.
I can sense her presence even though she’s several paces back.
I’m not sure why I was chosen for this mission, but I have my suspicions.
I find it comforting.
I think it’s because I’m short and can fit into small spaces.
She’s always been my anchor when things get out of control.
The kind of spaces that are too small for the security cameras to see.
And right now, I have a feeling that things are about to get very out of control.
I’m also pretty good at picking locks, which is a useful skill when you’re trying to break into a forbidden sector of the Time Travel Agency.
As we draw closer to the end of the hallway, I can make out a heavy metal door with a large red sign hanging over it.
But most importantly, I’m curious.
Access Restricted reads the bold white letters on the sign.
I want to know what happened in the past that caused time travel to be banned in the first place.
In other words: Do not enter.
And I want to know what will happen if we change history by recovering this ancient time machine.
I’ve been friends with Mia since we were kids, and she’s always been the smart one in our group.
Although I’m already well aware of this fact.
My heart hammers in my chest as I step up to the double doors and take one final glance at Mia over my shoulder.
She’s tall with straight black hair and dark brown eyes that seem to see right through me.
As I stand before the forbidden sector, I think about the first time Mia and I met.
Her face is pale and pinched with worry, but there’s a small smile playing at her lips.
It was in third grade, and I had just moved to a new school.
I know she doesn’t want me to see it because she’s worried that I’ll think she’s making fun of me.
But I’m not.
I was shy and didn’t know anyone, so when I saw Mia reading a book on a bench during recess, I decided to introduce myself.
We hit it off right away, and she became my first friend at the new school.
Her smile makes me feel like everything is going to be okay.
Our friendship has only grown stronger over the years as we’ve gone on countless missions together, each one more dangerous than the last.
I give her a small nod of reassurance, then turn back around and slide the keycard through the scanner.
This time, the red light blinks twice, then turns green, letting me know that I’ve been granted access to the restricted sector.
I don’t know what I’d do without her.
The double doors slide open with a loud hiss of air, and I step inside, my heart racing with anticipation as they slide shut behind me.
I glance over at her now, and she gives me a small smile and a nod of encouragement.
I’ve never been this close to the ancient time machine before.
We’ve been through so much together, but this is the first time I’ve ever seen her look nervous.
Her expression makes my stomach clench with anxiety, but I force myself to swallow my fear.
The technology that sparked the ban on time travel all those years ago and led to the creation of the Time Travel Agency itself.
And now, it’s up to me and Mia to recover the machine and make things right again.
This is our mission, and it’s up to me to see it through.
It’s moments like this that make me grateful for Mia’s friendship.
I take a deep breath and focus on the task at hand, not wanting to get ahead of myself before we even get started.
I think about what Mia said earlier and try not to let it bother me too much.
She’s always been the voice of reason in my life, and I know that if she’s worried, then I should be too.
But there’s something in me that won’t let myself be afraid.
It’s true, I am impulsive and curious.
I’m not much of a planner—I would rather dive headfirst into a situation and figure things out as I go along.
Deep down, I know that this is what I was meant to do.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with history and the secrets it holds.
But that’s what makes me so good at this job, isn’t it?
When Mia first introduced me to time travel, I was overjoyed at the idea of finally being able to see history come alive before my eyes.
When you’re on a mission as dangerous as this one, you need someone who is willing to take risks and think on their feet, and that’s exactly what I plan on doing.
And now that we’re on the cusp of doing just that, I can barely contain my excitement.
I trust Mia with my life, and she knows it.
My heart is pounding with anticipation as I reach into my pocket and pull out the keycard Mia gave me earlier.
We’ve been friends for as long as I can remember, and even though we come from very different backgrounds, we’ve always had each other’s backs.
We grew up in the same apartment building, and we used to spend hours playing games together in the courtyard on warm summer afternoons.
It’s our only way into the forbidden sector, and it’s up to me to make sure we get in undetected.
I slide the keycard through the scanner, holding my breath as I wait for it to be accepted.
We would climb trees, build forts, and explore every nook and cranny of our little corner of the city, always looking for the next big adventure.
The red light blinks once, then twice, then finally turns green, signaling that the scanner has recognized my access code.
And when we found it, we would face it head-on, no matter how dangerous it was or how much trouble we might get into along the way.
The door to the forbidden sector slides open with a soft hiss of air, revealing the chamber beyond.
Time's Lost Legacy
I take one last glance at Mia before stepping inside, committing her worried expression to memory so that I can focus on the task at hand.
Mia’s face appears on the small screen above the scanner.
I have no idea what lies ahead, but one thing is certain:
My life will never be the same after this.
“Remember,” she says, her voice soft but firm.
“If anyone catches you in there, it’s game over.
I take a deep breath and step inside, letting the door slide shut behind me as I make my way down the darkened hallway.
This is it—I’m finally going to see the ancient time machine up close.
You’ll be frozen on the spot before you even know what hit you.”
I give her a tight smile and nod again.
The very technology that sparked the ban on time travel all those years ago.
“I know,” I say.
We’ve been told that it’s been sealed away for over a century, but we all know what happens when something is locked up behind closed doors for too long.
“But that’s why you’re here, right?
Time's Lost Legacy
To make sure that doesn’t happen?”
She returns my smile and nods back at me.
“Right,” she says.
“I’ll keep an eye on everything from out here.
If I see anything—anything at all—I’ll let you know, okay?”
I take one last deep breath and turn back around.
“I love you too.”
Then I step through the doors and disappear from view.
Without Mia there to see me off, I need to rely on our transmitter to communicate with her and let her know how things are going.
We won’t be able to talk much once I’m in the sector—any other form of communication would risk being picked up by security—but she’ll be able to watch me on the small screen and guide me through the corridors.
I pull the maintenance uniform tighter around me and tuck the keycard into my pocket before I start down the hallway.
The floors are polished to a mirror-like shine, and the walls are a stark white that only serves to make the darkness of the forbidden sector feel even more ominous.
I glance back at the scanner by the door and see Mia’s face appear in the screen again.
She gives me a worried look and points to her eyes, then makes a sweeping motion with her hand.
She’s telling me to watch for security cameras and be careful about being seen.
It’s always good to have someone else watching your back when you’re on a mission like this one—someone who can see things you might miss or help you avoid making a mistake that could get you caught.
I give her a small thumbs-up to let her know I heard her and keep moving down the hallway.
My plan is to use the maintenance worker’s stolen keycard to access the sector, then make my way through the corridors until I find the time machine itself.
With any luck, I should be able to get in and out without anyone noticing I was ever here.
Being small definitely has its advantages when it comes to sneaking around like this—I can slip through tight spaces and avoid being seen much easier than someone with a larger build—but it also means I have to be extra careful about being spotted by security cameras or wandering patrols like this one.
That’s where Mia comes in.
She knows these corridors better than anyone else in the agency, and she’ll be able to guide me through them while watching for any signs of trouble along the way.
