one girl be tickled
It was a perfect summer day.
The sun was high in the sky, and the air was full of the promise of a hot day to come.
Alex Thompson and I were walking to the town square to get some ice cream.
Or at least I was.
Alex was walking with his hand covering his eyes.
“Don’t take your hand off your face, You don’t want to be blinded by my beauty.”
I laughed and playfully punched him in the arm.
“Shut up, Alex.I’m not going to take my hand off my face just because you’re so ugly that you’d make Medusa look like a supermodel.”
He gave me a shocked expression for a second before he burst out laughing.
I rolled my eyes and looked back at the road ahead of us.
“Don’t get your hopes up, Alex.I know you’re having a good hair day but that doesn’t mean I’m going to want to see your ugly face.”
He settled down and I heard him snicker.
“Are you sure, Em?I mean, it’s just that we’re going into the square and there are going to be a lot of people there. If I happen to lose my balance and trip into the fountain, don’t expect me not to grab onto you and take you down with me.”
I gave him a look.
“You wouldn’t dare.I’d make sure that you never saw me again.”
He shook his head and chuckled.
“I’m not going to trip into the fountain, Em.I don’t want to get my clothes wet.I like this shirt.”
I laughed and shook my head.
“I’m sure there are more shirts just like it where that one came from.”
He smiled at me for a second before he shrugged.
“You’re right.I guess that’s one of the perks of having a hot body; clothes are easier to come by.”
I laughed and rolled my eyes at him again.
“I’m pretty sure that’s not what people mean when they say that.”
He smirked at me for a second before he looked ahead.
“Just wait until we get into the square. There’s something exciting going on today and I can’t wait for you to find out what it is.”
“Nothing is exciting in this town,” I said, dismissing his over-exaggeration.
Alex was always saying that something exciting was happening, but it never was.
It was always the same old thing around here.
The town square came into view as we walked around the corner and my mouth dropped open when I saw what was happening in the square today.
There were people everywhere; families sitting on blankets in the grass, children running around playing in groups, teenagers standing around talking to one another, and couples walking hand-in-hand all over the place.
There was a stage set up in the middle of the square and I had no doubt that it was the cause of all these people being here today.
And it wasn’t even ten in the morning yet!

A loud roar of laughter erupted from the stage, causing me to jump in surprise.
“What’s going on?”
I asked Alex.
He was still covering his eyes, but he was walking along like he knew exactly where he was going.
“What are these people laughing at?”
“Something funny, obviously,” he replied.
I rolled my eyes again.
“I’m not an idiot, Alex.I know that they’re laughing at something funny.
I want to know what that funny thing is!”
“And I can’t wait for you to find out,” he said, a grin in his voice that made me narrow my eyes at him.
I was about to demand that he tell me what was happening when he finally lowered his hand from his face, and I got my answer.
We were close enough for me to see some of the people on the stage now, and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
A few of them were sitting on the stage with huge smiles on their faces as they laughed, but others were being tickled by what looked like feather dusters attached to long poles, and they were laughing so hard that they were crying.

Alex started to laugh so hard that his whole body shook and his eyes were squeezed shut so tightly that all I could see were the wrinkles around his eyes.
I couldn’t help but laugh along with him, even though I had no idea what was so funny yet.
We were close enough now for me to see what exactly what was happening on the stage, and when I did, my mouth dropped open in shock.
So this is what all the fuss is about?I thought to myself before I started laughing hysterically.
I laughed so hard that my whole body shook, but my hands were still wrapped around my ice cream cone because there was no way that I wanted to drop it.
“Emily, wipe your mouth,” Alex said through his laughter.
“You’ve got ice cream all over your face.”
I wiped my mouth with my arm, but it wasn’t enough, so I used my other hand to wipe the melted ice cream away from my lips.
“Is this some kind of joke?”
I asked Alex between breaths.
He shook his head and wiped at his eyes with one hand while holding my ice cream out for me with the other.
He caught it right before it fell out of my hand because I was laughing so hard.
“This is a tickling competition.” He said as he handed me back my ice cream cone.
I looked at him in shock for a second before I burst out laughing again.
“I-I’m sorry!”
I said before he could retaliate for punching him in the arm earlier today.
He shook his head at me, a little smile still gracing his lips despite the fact that he was still laughing as hard as I was.
“You don’t have to apologize. You were right; this is a joke.”
It was true; it was a joke, but it was also kind of funny, in a weird sort of way.
There were about twenty or thirty chairs set up on the stage in three rows of ten chairs each.
They were filled with people of all ages and sizes who were being tickled by the people standing behind them.
I don’t know if it was the sight of so many people laughing or the fact that it looked like it would be fun to try, but something had me wanting to give it a shot.
I was a little nervous to find out how much of a wimp I would be if someone tried to tickle me.
I’d been tickled before, but not by multiple people at once and definitely not by people who were professional ticklers.
I found it hard to believe that there were professional ticklers out there.
What did they do for a living?
Did they go around and tickle people who were having a bad day?
Did they get paid to make people laugh?
That seemed like a pretty sweet gig if you asked me.
“This is hilarious!”
Alex said through his laughter.
I nodded in agreement even though I didn’t think I’d ever be able to stop laughing long enough to get any words out.
I had never thought that watching people get tickled could be so entertaining.
“Yes it is.” I was finally able to get out once my laughter had subsided a little bit.
“You should try it.”
I looked at Alex as if he’d grown two heads while I tried to figure out if he was serious.
He looked back at me with an innocent expression that said, “I don’t see what the big deal is.”
I shook my head at him and rolled my eyes.
“No way!”
I said, but the more that I thought about it, the more that I wanted to try it for myself.
It looked like it would be fun; plus, no one had ever been able to make me laugh before.
There was no way that anyone would be able to make me laugh, especially not with a bunch of feathers.
“I should try it,” I said before Alex could say anything else.
“Yes you should!”
He agreed with a smile and a nod of his head.
“It looks like it would be fun.”
I nodded in agreement before I could talk myself out of it because I knew that if I talked myself out of it, then there was no way that I’d ever try it.
“Let’s go sign me up!”
I said as I took Alex’s hand and pulled him toward the booth where we could sign up for the competition.
My heart started to beat faster than normal as we made our way over to the registration booth so that I could sign up for the competition.
Was this really what I wanted to do?
What if everyone laughed at me because they were all professional ticklers?
Oh who was I kidding?
No one would laugh at me because they all knew that no one had ever seen me laugh or heard me laugh before, so there was no way that anyone would think it was funny, right?
“Emily!Emily, Emily, Emily!”
Alex chanted as he followed behind me on our way to the booth.
“I’m not going to do this, am I?”
I asked myself as we got into line behind five other contestants who were waiting to sign up for the competition too.
