When I woke up again, it was already noon.
When I woke up again, it was already noon.
Aether was travelling alone in Mondstadt.
I could hear laughter all around me, and it didn’t take long for me to realize that it was coming from myself.
I couldn’t help but feel surprised at how exhausted I must have been – I hadn’t slept so late in a long time!
After stretching my body and taking a moment to get my bearings, I finally got up and prepared to continue on my journey.
He had been walking for a long time, and the sun was about to set.
The hilichurls who had been sleeping earlier were now awake and standing around me, staring at me with their vacant eyes.
He found a hilichurl camp, and decided to rest there for the night.
They had all put on their masks, and I noticed that one of them was missing.
However, just as I was about to set off, I heard a loud noise coming from behind me.
It was the same mask that I had seen earlier.
As he walked towards the camp, he saw a hilichurl walking towards him.
It sounded like something large had fallen over.
It was strange, because hilichurls usually attacked on sight.
It was now on my face.
Curious about what could have caused such a commotion, I turned around and walked back the way I came.
To my surprise, I found myself standing in front of the same hilichurl camp where I had spent the night a few days ago.
What’s so funny?
This one was just walking towards him, holding a regular hilichurl mask.
The hilichurls looked at each other before they all began to laugh again.
It stopped in front of Aether, and laughed.
Had I gotten lost?
I didn’t think so…
Aether drew his sword and got into a fighting stance.
Their laughter was infectious, and before I knew it, I too was laughing along with them.
But then again, it seemed odd that I would end up back here again after such a short distance.
The hilichurl laughed even harder, and then it suddenly lunged at Aether.
At first, I thought it was funny.
But after a while, I began to wonder why I couldn’t stop.
Aether tried to dodge, but the hilichurl was too fast.
As I entered the campsite once more, the creatures looked at me curiously, but didn’t make any attempts to attack me.
It managed to put the mask on Aether's face with ease.
They were still deeply engrossed in their daily activities and hadn’t noticed my presence.
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t control my own body.
It was as if my mouth had a mind of its own and was determined to keep laughing no matter what.
Aether tried to take it off, but it wouldn't budge.
I took the opportunity to observe them and realized that they were all gathered around the bonfire at the center of the camp.
He felt his body changing, his skin turning green and his fingers growing claws.
Some were cooking meat over the fire, while others were busy sharpening their weapons.
The laughter echoed through the air, bouncing off the trees and back towards me in an eerie manner.
The hilichurls’ movements mimicked mine perfectly, as if we were all connected by some invisible force.
Satisfied that it was safe for me to rest here for the night, I found a spot not too close to the fire and settled down to sleep.
The last thing he saw before he blacked out was the strange hilichurl laughing at him.
Despite the noise of the creatures and their constant movements all around me, it didn’t take long for me to fall asleep.
But it wasn’t just their movements that were in sync with mine.
It was a day like any other in Mondstadt, and I was on a journey to explore this beautiful land.
The next time I woke up, it was already dark outside.
It was their laughter as well.
I had been here countless times before, but there was always something new to discover, some new adventure to embark on.
The camp was much quieter now that the hilichurls had gone to sleep.
It sounded like there were hundreds of voices coming from all around me, but I knew that it was just the hilichurls.
Mondstadt was a city like no other, with its unique architecture and vibrant culture.
As I walked through the streets, I couldn’t help but reminisce about the countless adventures I had shared in this wondrous place with my twin sister, Lumine.
The only sound that filled the air was the occasional rustling of leaves as the wind blew through the trees.
My own voice had been drowned out by theirs.
From exploring hidden nooks to partaking in the local festivities, every corner of Mondstadt held a story from our past.
I reached up to grab the mask on my face, but before I could get a hold of it, the hilichurls started to laugh even louder.
I lay in my spot for a while longer, allowing myself to get lost in my own thoughts.
I missed Lumine, but she was currently away on an expedition of her own, so I decided to embark on this journey alone.
I recalled the early days of my journey when things were still new and exciting.
In a panic, I ripped the mask off my face and threw it onto the ground.
I remembered how difficult it had been at first – trying to find my way in a foreign land with no one but myself for company.
But the laughter didn’t stop.
The city was as tranquil as ever, with the townspeople going about their business as usual.
It was still coming from inside of me.
But as time went on and I became more familiar with the lay of the land, things slowly began to get easier.
It was hard to believe that it had only been a few hours since I had arrived in Mondstadt.
Now, I had become somewhat of an expert explorer, which made it easier for me to navigate my way through even the most treacherous of terrains.
I watched in horror as the hilichurls’ movements came to a sudden halt.
I had spent the entire day walking around and immersing myself in the beauty of this place, and now the sun was beginning to set.
Lost in my own memories, I didn’t realize how much time had passed until I heard a noise coming from behind me.
They stood there silently, staring at me with their vacant eyes.
I knew it was time to find a place to rest for the night, so I decided to make my way back to the inn where I was staying.
It sounded like someone was approaching.
But their laughter continued to ring in my ears.
As I walked, I spotted a hilichurl camp not far from my path, and decided it would be as good a spot as any to spend the night.
Hilichurls were curious creatures that inhabited Teyvat, and it wasn’t uncommon to see them wandering around the land.
I quickly got up and prepared myself for a potential threat.
It took a while for the laughter to finally stop.
My eyes scanned the darkness in search of movement, and after a few seconds, a figure came into view.
They were generally harmless, but some of them could be quite hostile, so I always made sure to keep my guard up around them.
When it did, the camp fell silent.
It was walking towards me slowly but steadily.
I stood there for a while longer, trying to catch my breath.
I quickly surveyed the camp and noticed that it was relatively small, with only a few hilichurls scattered around.
They were all busy doing their own thing and didn’t seem to have noticed my presence yet.
My heart was pounding so fast that I could feel it in my chest.
Who are you?
I took this opportunity to sneak past them and find a quiet spot where I could settle in for the night.
I called out cautiously as I took a step back.
What just happened?
I asked myself as I tried to make sense of things.
As I walked through the camp, I suddenly felt a strange sensation on my face.
In response to my question, the figure let out an eerie laugh that sent shivers down my spine.
I reached up to touch my cheek and realized that something had been placed there without my knowledge.
Masked Destiny
Looking around, it was hard to believe that the hilichurls had been laughing just a few moments earlier.
Their camp was now completely silent except for the occasional rustling of leaves as the wind blew through the trees.
I quickly pulled it off and inspected it in my hand – it was a hilichurl mask!
It felt like a dream – as if I had imagined everything that had just happened and that none of it had actually been real.
How did that get there?
But I knew that wasn’t true.
I shook my head in disbelief and continued on my way, eager to find a place where I could rest for the night.
After a few minutes of walking, I finally found a suitable spot and set up camp.
The laughter still lingered in my memory, and the mask that lay on the ground served as a chilling reminder of what had just occurred.
The sun had already set, and darkness enveloped the sky like a thick blanket.
My hands were shaking as I bent down to pick it up.
It was time for me to rest, so I closed my eyes and let sleep take over my body.
As soon as I touched it, a wave of panic washed over me, and I quickly put it back down before taking a step back.
It felt like I was being watched again – only this time, there was no one around except for me and the strange mask on the ground.
I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed and ready for another day of adventure.
I packed up my things and began walking towards Mondstadt once more.

Just when I thought it was over, the laughter started again.
This time, it was coming from the hilichurl that I had seen earlier.
It was standing just a few feet away from me, staring at me with its vacant eyes.
But unlike the others, it was not wearing a mask.
Instead, it was holding one in its hands, and its mouth was moving in a way that suggested that it was the source of the laughter that I was hearing.
But what’s so funny?
I asked myself as I stared back at it in confusion.
Hilichurls were not known for their intelligence – in fact, they were often seen as little more than mindless creatures that roamed the land in search of food and treasure.
They were more like wild animals than actual living beings, and most people didn’t give them much thought beyond that.
But this one was different.
It stood out from the rest not only because it looked different, but also because it seemed to be more aware of its surroundings than the others were.
The hilichurl stared back at me for a while longer before it suddenly started to laugh again.
This time, the laughter carried a mischievous tone, and I knew that there was something strange going on here.
But what?
My adventurer’s instincts were telling me that something was off, and that I needed to be careful if I wanted to survive whatever was about to happen next.
With that thought in mind, I took a step back and prepared myself for battle just in case things took a turn for the worse.
But to my surprise, the hilichurl did not attack me.
Instead, it started to move towards me very slowly, almost as if it was trying to sneak up on me without being noticed.
Its movements were so slow and deliberate that I was almost tempted to let my guard down – almost being the key word here because I knew better than to trust anything that came from these lands, no matter how harmless it seemed to be.
I watched the hilichurl closely as it moved closer and closer towards me, waiting for it to make its next move before I struck first.
But it never did.
Instead, it stopped just a few feet away from me and held out the mask that it was holding in its hands for me to see.
The mask was similar to the other ones that I had seen – it was made out of wood and had a strange design that reminded me of something that I had seen before but couldn’t quite remember where or when that had been at all.
Masked Destiny
I raised my brows at the hilichurl questioningly, wondering what it wanted me to do with the mask and whether there was some sort of hidden motive behind all this that I wasn’t aware of yet.
But the hilichurl only laughed again at my reaction, and this time, the laughter was much louder than before and sounded much more unsettling as well.
It only lasted for a few seconds, but I could already feel my hair standing on end because of how creepy it was.
When the laughter finally died down and everything fell silent again, the hilichurl turned around and started walking away from me again with the same slow and deliberate movements that it had been using earlier on when it was coming towards me.
But this time, there was something different about it – it wasn’t just moving away from me anymore but also towards other hilichurls that seemed to be hiding in the shadows somewhere around us because I could hear their voices too now, only they weren’t loud enough for me to make out what they were saying or where they were exactly at all.
And then I heard it again.
The same unsettling laughter that the hilichurl had been making all along, only louder this time, as if it were right next to me, even though I could still see the hilichurl walking away from me and not coming back any time soon either.
I didn’t know what was going on, but I knew one thing for sure: this hilichurl was up to no good.
I didn’t know what it was planning on doing or how it would go about doing it either, but I knew that it would not hesitate to do anything at all in order to get what it wanted.
With that thought in mind, I unsheathed my sword with a swift motion and turned around with it raised high above my head, ready to strike at whatever was trying to sneak up on me all of a sudden.
And I almost dropped my sword in shock when I saw what it was.
It was the same hilichurl that I had seen earlier on, only its movements were no longer slow and deliberate at all but quick and erratic instead.
