I was at the crime scene when I saw him.
He was running away from the police, and they were shooting at him.
But the bullets didn’t hit him.
He was too fast for them.
And then he did something that I couldn’t believe.
He opened a portal and disappeared into it.
I had to find out who he was and how he did that.
I had to find out more about him.
I had to find out everything about him.
I had to know his secrets.
I had to catch him.
The city was bustling with activity as I made my way through the crowded streets in my car, trying to get to the crime scene as quickly as possible.
It was a hot summer day, and I could feel the sweat trickling down my back as I drove through the traffic, my eyes fixed on the road ahead of me, my hands gripping the steering wheel tightly.
I was a detective in one of the busiest cities in the country, and I was on my way to investigate a crime that had taken place the previous night.
It was a routine investigation, and I didn’t expect anything out of the ordinary to happen.
But as I would soon find out, this was no ordinary crime scene.
When I arrived at the scene, I parked my car and made my way towards the building where the crime had taken place, my black leather shoes echoing on the pavement as I walked.
I saw that my colleague, Maria Lopez, was already there, examining the evidence and taking photographs.
Maria was a young and brilliant forensic scientist, known for her striking features and intelligence.
She had long black hair that fell in waves down her back, and she always wore it in a neat ponytail when she was working.
She had dark brown eyes that sparkled with intelligence and mischief, and she had a smile that could light up a room.
“Hey, John,” Maria said when she saw me approaching.
I reached out to shake her hand, but she ignored it and gave me a quick hug instead.
“How are you?”
“I’m good,” I said, smiling at her.
“How are you?”
“Good,” Maria said.
“I’ve been here for about half an hour.
The police have already taken all the evidence they need, so we can start our investigation soon.”
“Good,” I said.
“Let’s get started then.”
We spent the next few hours examining the evidence and taking photographs, and by the time we were finished, it was already dark outside.
As we were getting ready to leave, we heard a commotion coming from the street below, and we looked down to see a man dressed in a black cape and hood running away from the police.
The police officers were chasing after him and shooting at him, but the bullets didn’t seem to be hitting their target.
The man was too fast for them as he ran through the crowded streets, dodging cars and people with ease.
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
It was as if the man had some kind of supernatural powers that allowed him to move faster than the eye could see.
And then, just as he had done the night before, the man opened a portal and disappeared into it, leaving me and Maria standing there staring at the empty street in disbelief.
“How did he do that?”
Maria asked, her eyes wide with shock.
“I have no idea,” I said, shaking my head.
“But we’re going to find out.”
Thomas Grey appeared behind us, his muscular build filling the doorway as he stepped out onto the rooftop.
Thomas was a police officer who had been assigned to the case, and he was an acquaintance of mine.
He had short blond hair, bright blue eyes, and a permanent scowl on his face that made him look like he was always angry.
“What are you two doing up here?”
he asked, his voice stern.
“It’s not safe to be chasing after criminals on your own.
You need to wait for backup.”
Portal of Shadows
But as Maria and I watched the police officers making their way up the stairs to the rooftop, Thomas in the lead, I couldn’t shake the image of the man in the black cape and hood from my mind.
How had he managed to evade the police officers so easily?
And how had he opened that portal and disappeared into thin air?
It was impossible.
Nobody could do that.
Except for the man in the black cape and hood, apparently.
And I was determined to find out how he did it.
I followed Thomas and Maria up the stairs to the rooftop, my mind racing with questions that I didn’t know how to answer.
I didn’t believe in the supernatural, but I had seen the man with my own eyes, and I couldn’t deny what I had witnessed.
It was as if reality itself had been turned upside down, and everything that I thought I knew about the world was wrong.
As we reached the top of the stairs, I saw that the forensic teams were already there, securing the evidence and taking photographs of the scene.
I could see that there was a pool of blood on the ground where the man had been standing when he opened the portal, but there was no sign of him anywhere.
I looked around the rooftop, but it was empty.
“He must have gotten away,” Maria said, looking around in confusion.
“But where did he go?”
“I don’t know,” Thomas said, scowling at her.
“You were supposed to be watching him.”
“I was,” Maria said.
“But he was too fast for me.”
“Let’s focus on securing the evidence first,” I said, interrupting their argument.
“We can deal with this later.”
Thomas scowled at me, but he didn’t say anything else as we made our way across the rooftop to where the forensic teams were working.
The officers and specialists looked up as we approached, nodding at us in acknowledgment before returning their attention to their work.
They were used to me by now, and they knew that I liked to be involved in every aspect of the investigation, even if it meant getting my hands dirty.
But as I watched them working, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief that there were still some things in this world that made sense to me.
I watched the forensic teams working for a few moments, my mind still reeling from what I had seen, trying to make sense of it all.
But the more I thought about it, the more confused I became, and I knew that I wouldn’t be able to get any answers until I found the man in the black cape and hood and forced him to tell me his secrets.
And I was going to do just that, no matter what it took.
I descended the stairs back down to the street below, leaving Thomas and Maria behind as they continued to argue with each other on the rooftop.
They would be fine without me, I knew, and I had more important things to worry about right now.
The man in the black cape and hood had changed everything for me, and I wasn’t sure if I would ever be able to go back to the way things were before I saw him that night.
Portal of Shadows
It was impossible, I knew, but I had seen him disappear with my own two eyes, and I couldn’t deny what had happened.
The memory of that night haunted me as I surveyed the crime scene in front of me.
The police officers and forensic teams were already hard at work, securing the evidence and taking photographs of everything they found, but my mind was somewhere else entirely, consumed by thoughts of the man in the black cape and hood, and how he had disappeared into thin air right in front of my eyes.
It was impossible, I knew that, but I had seen it happen with my own two eyes, and I couldn’t deny what I had seen, no matter how much I wished that I could.
As my mind continued to dwell on the events of that night, my eyes searched desperately for some sign of what had happened, some clue as to how the man had managed to disappear without a trace.
But there was nothing there, nothing out of the ordinary or unusual, and I felt my frustration growing as I struggled to make sense of what had happened.
It wasn’t possible, I knew that, but that didn’t change the fact that it had happened anyway.
“What do you think, Reed?”
I blinked, snapping out of my thoughts as Maria approached me.
She was holding a small plastic bag in her hand, the evidence inside carefully labeled and organized, just like she liked it.
Her long black hair was pulled back into a tight bun at the base of her neck, and her large brown eyes were fixed on me with an intensity that I found both disconcerting and distracting at the same time.
“I don’t know,” I said, turning my attention back to the crime scene in front of me, even though I knew that she would be watching me the entire time.
“I think that he got away.”
Maria frowned in confusion.
“Who are you talking about?”
she asked, her voice soft but insistent.
“The man in the black cape,” I said, remembering the lie that I had told her earlier.
“The suspect who was running away from us.”
“Oh,” Maria said, her frown deepening into a scowl as she realized what I was talking about.
“Do you think that we’ll be able to catch him?”
I hesitated for a moment before answering, trying to find the right words to say.
“I don’t know,” I said finally, deciding that the truth was probably the best option here.
“We’ll do our best, of course.
But right now, we need to focus on getting as much evidence as possible so that we can find him later.”
Maria nodded, accepting my answer without question.
She knew better than to press me for information when I didn’t want to give it, and she had learned that the hard way a long time ago.
But deep down, I knew that she could see right through me, and that she knew that there was something else going on here, something that I wasn’t telling her or anyone else.
But how could I explain what had happened to her, or even to myself?
I was a detective, after all, a man who had built his entire career on evidence and deduction, on things that could be seen and proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.
