I woke up under a tree with no memory of who I was.
The first thing I noticed was the pain in my head.
It felt like I’d been hit by a truck.
I groaned and sat up, rubbing my temples.
A few feet away, two people were lying on the ground.
One was a guy with sandy blond hair, and the other was a girl with curly red hair.
They both looked like they were in pain, too.
I crawled over to them and shook the guy’s shoulder.
“Hey, are you okay?”
He groaned and opened his eyes.
“Who are you?”
“I don’t know,” I said.
“I can’t remember anything.”
He sat up and looked around.
“Where are we?”
“I don’t know that either.”
The girl groaned and sat up as well.
“Who are you guys?”
she asked, looking back and forth between us.
“I can’t remember anything,” I said again.
“But I think we all have amnesia.”
“I think she’s right,” she said.
“I can’t remember anything either.”
The guy looked at me.
“Were we all together?”
“I don’t know,” I said.
“Do we know each other?”
He shook his head.
“I don’t recognize either of you, but I don’t remember much of anything.”
We were all quiet for a moment, lost in our thoughts.
I shifted my weight and winced.
My head was still pounding, but it wasn’t as bad as it had been when I woke up.
It felt like I’d been asleep for a while.
I looked around and realized that we were surrounded by the remnants of a picnic.
There was a blanket and some paper plates with half-eaten sandwiches and potato chips scattered across it.
I couldn’t remember having a picnic, and I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to forget something like that, especially if it had just happened.
The girl seemed to realize the same thing at the same time I did.
She frowned and looked at the two of us.
“Why would we be out here by ourselves if we can’t remember anything?
“Maybe someone dumped us here?”
the guy suggested.
The girl shook her head, her red curls bouncing around her face.
“I think we’re all amnesiacs because we all have amnesia,” she said.
I looked at her, confused.
“You sure it’s because we’re all amnesiacs?
I narrowed my eyes at her.
“You know, it’s not very nice to be sarcastic to people who have amnesia.”
She looked like she was going to argue with me, but then her frown deepened.
I realized that I could control how other people felt just by thinking about it.
It was like I could reach out and touch their emotions, turning them on and off like a switch.
I wasn’t sure how or why I could do that, but it was definitely weird.

“What did you just do?”
“I don’t know,” I admitted.
“But when I woke up, my head hurt so bad that I thought I was going to die.”
She looked at me in amazement.
“You made the pain go away?”
I nodded.
“That means you can control emotions too?”
She asked me.
The guy had been listening to our conversation and now he looked like he was even more confused than he had been when he woke up under the tree.
“You mean you guys don’t know what your powers are either?”
he asked us.
We shook our heads.
He ran a hand through his hair and sighed.
“This is not good.”
I leaned back on my hands and looked at him.
“What about you?”
He nodded and held up his hand.
A few seconds later, it was back to normal.
“Whoa,” the girl breathed.
“So, you’re like Wolverine or something?”
I asked him.
He laughed and shook his head.
“No, not like Wolverine,” he said.
“I can only heal myself, not anyone else.”
I nodded, filing that information away in my head for later use, just in case I needed it.
“I can control time,” he told us.
“That’s how I got my hand to heal so fast.”
I looked at him in awe, but then my brain caught up with my mouth and I realized that being able to control time was probably even better than being able to turn off other people’s emotions or heal myself super fast.
The girl looked at me, the same realization dawning on her face as well.
I held up my hands to calm her down before she could get too worked up about it, since we didn’t know how our powers worked or how powerful they were yet, but then she turned to him and asked him the obvious question that had been nagging at the back of my mind since we woke up under the tree together: “Do you know how we all got here?”
He shook his head and looked at her with confusion in his eyes.
“I don’t even know who I am,” he said.
“And if I can control time, then why do I have amnesia?”
I thought about that for a moment and then had an idea.
“Maybe we should introduce ourselves?”
The girl nodded in agreement, but then she frowned again when she realized that she didn’t remember who she was either.
“That’s okay,” I told her with a smile.
“We can use our powers as temporary names until we remember who we are.”
She nodded and smiled back at me as she took my hand and shook it vigorously.
“My name is Alice Hart,” I told them with a smile as I shook their hands in turn, giving the guy the name “Jack Rivers” since he controlled time, and the girl the name “Sarah Lin” since she could heal instantly.
Echoes of Destiny
Unless…
I trailed off when I noticed a shimmering light in the distance again, just like the one that had drawn me in before when we hadn’t known what to do or where to go next after having woken up under the tree together without any memories of who we were or how we got here in the first place, or even why we were here in this strange new world together… unless whoever or whatever brought us here did it on purpose?
“What is it?”
The girl asked me in concern, and I smiled at her to reassure her, since the last thing any of us needed right now was to panic and lose our heads.
“It’s the light,” I told her, pointing in the direction of the shimmering light so she could see it for herself.
“It’s back again.”
She looked in the direction I was pointing and saw the shimmering light in the distance as well, and then she gasped in surprise when she realized what it was.
“It’s the way home,” she said excitedly as she turned to us with a smile on her face.
“It’s the way home!”
I bit my lip, not entirely convinced that was the case, but then Jack spoke up before I could say anything.
“We should follow it,” he told us with a serious look on his face as he glanced over at me for confirmation that we had made the right decision in doing so, and I nodded at him with a smile to let him know that we had.
“Yeah, we should,” Sarah agreed as she turned to me for confirmation as well, and I smiled at her before we set off after the light hand in hand together.
It wasn’t long before we reached an abandoned house on the outskirts of town, and by then, we were all starving and thirsty from having walked so far without having eaten anything or having anything to drink since waking up under the tree together earlier that day.
Jack conjured up some food and water for us to eat and drink with his time manipulation power, but then he got all shy and tried to refuse our help when we offered to cook for him instead, since he was the one who could only heal himself and couldn’t turn off other people’s emotions or heal anyone else super fast like Sarah and me.
“You don’t have to do this,” he told us with a blush on his cheeks as he held his hands up to protest our help in cooking for him despite how hungry he knew he was after having been able to sense his empty stomach growling so loud that it sounded like an angry monster.
“I can do it myself.”
“Don’t be silly,” Sarah told him with a laugh as she patted him on the back in reassurance as she walked past him, heading into the house to gather some things for us to cook in the kitchen together.
“We’re a team now, remember?”
She called over her shoulder to him before he could argue with her again, making him sigh in defeat as he followed her into the house, knowing perfectly well that he wasn’t going to win this fight, but then he smiled at me as he passed me by with a smile on his face, knowing perfectly well that he had Sarah on his side in this argument, since she was always so nice and optimistic that she never let anything get her down, even having lost her memories like we had earlier that day no matter how hard she tried to remember them again now.
