The first time I saw a dead man walk, I was twelve years old.
He was a tall, thin man with sharp features and dark eyes.
His skin was as pale as the moon, and his clothes were tattered and stained with blood.
He walked with a slow, shuffling gait, his head hanging low as if he were too weary to hold it up.
I watched him from the shadows of an alleyway, my heart pounding in my chest.
I had heard the stories, of course.
Everyone in New Golgothica had heard the stories.
But I had never believed them until that moment.
It was a warm summer night, and the streets were deserted.
The curfew bell had rung hours ago, and the only sound was the distant howling of the Lupins in their lair beneath the city.
I had been out late with my friends Eliza and Lucas, exploring the city's vast necropolis on NeoCalvary Island.
Eliza was the first to volunteer to investigate, as she always was.
With her fiery spirit and her copper hair, she was the bravest of us all.
Her eyes shone with excitement as she led the way through the winding streets of the necropolis, her torch casting strange shadows on the walls of the mausoleums.
Lucas, the scholar's son, was next, his long legs eating up the distance.
He was usually the most cautious of us, but even he couldn't resist the lure of adventure on that fateful night.
I hurried after them, my heart pounding in my chest.
I knew we shouldn't be there; I knew we were breaking the law.
But I couldn't help myself.
There was something about New Golgothica that called to me, something I couldn't quite explain.
As we neared the mausoleum, Eliza and Lucas slowed to a stop, their eyes wide with fear.
I hesitated for a moment, then stepped forward and peered inside.
The torchlight flickered in the darkness, casting strange shadows on the walls.
At first, I saw nothing but empty stone sarcophagi and piles of dust.
Then, as my eyes adjusted to the dim light, I saw something moving in the shadows.
It was a man, or at least it had been once.
His skin was ashen and mottled with decay.
His eyes were clouded over and vacant, and his mouth hung open in a silent scream.
He shuffled forward, his arms outstretched, his fingers curling into claws.
I closed my mouth and took a step back, my heart pounding in my chest.
For a moment, I was paralyzed with fear.
Then Eliza grabbed my arm and pulled me away.
“Come on,” she hissed through clenched teeth.
“Let's get out of here.”
I let her lead me back through the winding streets of the necropolis, my mind spinning with what I had seen.
The dead man had been frightening, yes, but he had also been fascinating.
I had so many questions about what I had seen, but I knew better than to ask them out loud.
Everyone in New Golgothica knew it was forbidden to speak of what went on in the city's labyrinthine mausoleums, but that only made me want to know more.
How had they done it?
How had they brought the dead back to life?
And why?
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I had to find out for myself, no matter what it took.
Gravesite Secrets: Unraveling New Golgothica's Mysteries
My pulse surged with a heady cocktail of fear and excitement as we crept through the winding streets of New Golgothica's vast necropolis, our torches flickering in the darkness like ghostly will-o'-the-wisps.
The city was a necropolis, a burial ground for the dead where corpses were left in state and preserved for all eternity in the dark, dry air of its many mausoleums and sepulchers.
There were no graveyards or cemeteries, no rows of headstones or neatly manicured lawns.
Instead, the streets were lined with towering stone mausoleums adorned with grotesque gargoyles and angelic statues, their walls pockmarked with alcoves containing the mummified remains of those who had gone before.
The sight stirred a mix of apprehension and fascination in us, as we had been taught from a young age that the dead were not to be feared but revered like gods and goddesses who had gone before, and who watched over us from their silent tombs far beneath the earth.
Our parents had warned us time and again that the city was dangerous, that we should never venture into its winding streets after dark for fear of what might be lurking in its shadows—both living and dead.
But, like all children, we were curious and eager to learn more about the world around us, and so we had spent countless hours exploring the city's vast necropolis, venturing farther and farther into its depths like intrepid explorers on the verge of discovering a new world or ancient civilization with secrets to reveal.
Eliza was the first to lead the way, as she always was, her bright red hair blazing like a torch in the darkness as she hurried along the narrow streets, her feet making a faint echo on the cobblestones beneath us that sounded like the steps of phantoms following close behind.
Lucas was next, his long legs eating up the distance as he hurried after her, his eyes wide with fear and excitement as he scanned the shadows for any sign of movement.
I brought up the rear, my heart pounding in my chest as I followed in their footsteps, my own torch casting strange shadows on the walls of the mausoleum that seemed to dance and writhe like living things in the flickering light.
The air was heavy with the scent of incense and decay, and I could feel the weight of centuries pressing down upon me like a shroud as we hurried along, our footsteps echoing through the darkness like the sound of doom approaching in the night.
I was both thrilled and terrified by what we were doing, but deep down inside, I knew that there was no turning back now.
We had crossed a line that could not be uncrossed, and there was no telling where it might lead us or what we might find waiting for us at the end of our journey deep beneath the earth in the city of the dead.
I should have been frightened by what I had seen in those dark passages far beneath the earth, but I wasn't.
Gravesite Secrets: Unraveling New Golgothica's Mysteries
In the dimly lit mausoleum, a figure loomed in the shadows, his tall shape stretching out like a monster born from nightmares, his eyes gleaming with an eerie light.
A chill ran down my spine as I caught sight of him, and I felt a sudden urge to turn and run, but I forced myself to stand still, staring up at him with wide eyes as he gazed down at us from his darkened alcove.
He seemed to be watching us, but it was impossible to tell for sure, as his features were obscured by the shadows, leaving nothing but his eyes visible in the flickering torchlight.
He towered over us like a god, his presence unmistakable in the ancient mausoleum filled with the preserved bodies of the dead, each one carefully arranged and decorated in keeping with the city's macabre customs.
Eliza and Lucas clung together in fear, their faces white as chalk as they whispered quietly to each other, their voices lost in the heavy silence that filled the air like a shroud.
"Don't go near him, Jonathan," Eliza said, her voice thin and reedy with fear.
"He'll kill you if you do."
"Or worse," Lucas added, his eyes wide and frightened as he stared up at the mysterious figure who stood before us, his face hidden by the darkness.
But it was too late.
Their warning was lost on me, as my curiosity had already gotten the better of me, driving me forward despite the fear that twisted in the pit of my stomach like a living thing as I stepped closer and closer to the edge of the alcove where he stood.
He was tall, with sharp features that seemed somehow familiar, as if I had seen them somewhere before, but that was impossible, for no one in the city looked like him or shared his strange, otherworldly beauty.
His eyes gleamed with an ethereal light as he regarded me with a strange sort of intensity, as if he could see into the depths of my soul and knew me far better than any stranger had a right to.
His mouth opened as if to speak, but no sound came out for a moment, and then his voice rose up from the darkness like a cold whisper, sending shivers down my spine as his words echoed through the ancient mausoleum like a ghost from beyond the grave.
"You've come a long way," he said, his words hanging in the air like a curse as he gazed down at me.
"A very long way indeed."
The man regarded me with an odd sort of intensity as he spoke, and for a moment, I felt myself caught in the grip of his gaze, unable to move or speak or do anything but stand there like one of the many statues that adorned the walls of the mausoleum.
His eyes seemed to bore into my soul like twin black holes that threatened to swallow me whole, and for a moment, I felt as if I were being drawn into them against my will.
But then the feeling passed, and the man turned away without another word, leaving me standing there in the darkness with my heart pounding in my chest as he vanished into the shadows above me like a wraith.
I stood there for a moment longer, staring up at the spot where he had stood until Eliza called out my name, her voice breaking me out of my trance as she held out her hand to me.
